Principal Denies Allegations

HONOLULU A Big Island charter school student filed a lawsuit against the school's principal and secretary Tuesday, claiming she was strip-searched at school. The American Civil Liberties Union said it took this case after the girl's mother repeatedly complained to the school and school board, but was brushed off. Principal Steve Hirakami and secretary Andrea Irvine of Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science are at the center of the lawsuit. The unnamed 15-year-old girl claims Hirakami decided she and another girl should be strip-searched after being accused of stealing money from a school van driver. "They were detained. They were interrogated by the police. Their belongings were looked through and then the principal decided he would have them strip-searched as well," ACLU attorney Brent White said.

demand for more meaningful ways to assess school quality, leading

evaluate their child's education. The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), along with 34 partner organizations, developed the questions for parents to ask as a more substantial way of assessing the quality of a child's education. The questions were designed for parents of school-age children attending public or private schools as an alternative to top ten lists and rankings based on test scores. "Parents are increasingly focused on the quality of education today. With the many issues parents have to think about regarding

Directory of Historical Records Repositories in Hawaii
The Association of Hawaii Archivists and the Hawaiian Historical Society are pleased to present this updated fourth edition of the Directory of Historical Records Repositories in Hawaii. What new insights will scholars of the next millennium discover? It is our hope that all researchers, veterans and novices alike, will benefit from this new edition as they map their way into Hawaii's past. It has been five years since the directory was last revised. This latest edition includes more than a dozen new listingscomplete with holdings and locations, of coursebut also enhanced with email addresses and websites. For added convenience and accessibility the directory is available on the Hawaiian Historical Society website in electronic format. Some of these new listings represent fledgling collections that are still being processed and may therefore not be as easily accessible as some of the older, well established repositories. We felt, however, that these sites should be included to present the researcher with every possible avenue of exploration. New repositories should be contacted prior to a visit in order to clarify what is available to researchers. Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.

Chapter V. Previous Chapter Next Chapter Mrs. Coan’s School for Girls Common SchoolsMedical Work The Sailors’ Church Sunday Work Visits of Foreign Vessels The U. S. Exploring Expedition. IN the year 1838, Mrs. Coan opened a boarding school for native girls. This was to be self-supporting in part, but to receive such aid in labor, food, kapas, mats, etc., as parents and friends chose to render. As soon as the plan was made known to the church and people they rallied cheerfully, went into the woods, hauled down timber by hand, and with great promptness erected and thatched a comfortable building on our premises. A floor was laid over about one fourth of the building, on which was placed a table, and a few chairs for the teacher and visitors. On each side of the remaining three-fourths of the house was a row of little open cells, partitioned from each other by mats, and furnished with beds of straw or dried grass, and with mats and kapas for coverings. In the space between these rows of compartments was a plain table, with seats, bowls, spoons, etc., for the pupils. The number of little girls in the school was twenty, their ages from seven to ten years. Arrangements were made with the people living in and near the town, that they should bring in weekly supplies of food and fish for the girls. Taro, potatoes, bananas, and fish were then abundant and cheap, and the people provided willingly. At length they set apart a parcel of ground and appointed each monthly concert day as a time when they would cultivate that ground and thus supply the food necessary for the school.

Environmental documents for school nearly complete
West Hawaii Today/July 6, 2003
By Bobby Command
Environmental documents are nearly complete for a $4 million to $6 million North Kona boarding high school financed by Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. The Pacific Rim Education Foundation seeks a special permit to build the High School of the Pacific on 30 acres of agriculturally zoned property about a mile north of Kona Palisades and adjacent to the Puukala subdivision. School officials had looked into the possibility of sharing access to Mamalahoa Highway with neighboring subdivisions. But concerns by residents prompted an alternative plan to build an access road across state property. Use of state land triggers preparation of an environmental assessment. Sidney Fuke, a planning consultant for the Pacific Rim Education Foundation, said documents are nearly complete and should be submitted to the state Office of Environmental Quality Control. The school plans to build enough space to house and teach 200 students, mostly from emerging Pacific island nations. But Pacific Rim Education Foundation officials said space will be reserved for about 30 to 40 students from Hawaii. "We think it's a great opportunity to do something for the little guys," said Joe Tully, president of the High School of the Pacific. "They can't do it themselves. They don't have the critical mass of population or money."

A nonprofit foundation headed by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon is proposing to build a private high school in Kona.
Hawaii Tribune-Herald/August 9, 2002
By Hunter Bishop
Directors of the Pacific Rim Education Foundation announced plans last week to establish the "High School of the Pacific" on a 32 - acre site makai of Mamalahoa Highway, adjacent to the Kona Ocean View Properties subdivision in Pu'ukala. The proposed boarding school would house up to 200 students from Pacific island nations and Hawaii in a "shared - living experience," said Joe A. Tully, president of the foundation. Tully said the school was initiated by Moon after talks with Pacific island leaders, who identified secondary education as one of their countries' most pressing long - term needs. "This unique high school is being built primarily for students from Pacific island nations that are too small to have adequate education systems of their own," Tully said. A good education will enable the students and their nations "participate in the global advances in knowledge and technology," he said. "In addition, we believe that a common educational experience and the lifelong, cross - cultural friendships developed at this school can contribute to greater understanding and cooperation in the Pacific region," Tully said.

Reminiscent of New England architecture the Bond Mission Station
is now a historic landmark in North Kohala Isolated from the bustling activity elsewhere on the islands, in rugged silence perturbed only by unpredictable storms and heavy rains, North Kohala proudly sails the waves of struggle and prosperity.
The road ends here. It doesn't require great imagination to sense, in Kohala's buildings, people, and land, how challenges and demands color the sweetness and inspiration of a remote, rural area. Yet all what Kohala is about today has been shaped by a most unusual, often difficult, past: A New England Mission Station, independent and self-sufficient, transformed Kohala so people found both the work and inspiration to stay, at a time that the future for many Hawaiians had turned bleak.
The first missionaries arrived on the islands in 1820. They found a nation that had just lost the foundation of its religious values with the abolition of the ancient taboos. Hawaii was hungry for renewed security and order. The missionaries, as it happened, found fertile grounds.
