After highschool, I worked on horse farms and at the casinos in Atlantic City. From there I went to Wentworth Institute of Technology, where I received a 5 year Bachelor of Architecture Degree. After this milestone, I dove off the deep end and got married to Lisa Ann Henry. I am glad to say after two years of marriage I am as happy as day one, especially since we just had our first little one, Emily Rose Phillips. I am currently a CADD designer / drafter in a small New England company. I would like to say that my years at Fenster created some fond memories and friendships which I will always cherish. Navajo Code Talkers
Introduction
The Navajo people, called Dine', are from the southwestern four corner states of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. After the Treaty of 1868 was signed between the Navajo and the United States government, the government felt responsible for the education of Navajo children. As a result, boarding schools were created and children were taken from their families and taught to bury their traditional Navajo culture in these schools. At boarding school, children were forbidden to speak their language and they were punished severely if caught. Many people tried to hide their children from officers who came to put them in the schools, but a lot of children were taken anyway. In the Navajo culture, it is emphasized that people should always be aware of the enemy. They should always be prepared to fight to protect their land and their people. Besides the Anglos, the Navajo did not realize that a more ominous enemy would threaten them. During World War II, the Japanese wanted to gain worldwide control. However, a major obstacle was the presence of the United States Navy in the Northern Pacific. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the American Navy at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The bombing of Pearl Harbor had a great impact on the Navajo. Many Navajo men reacted to the Japanese attack and reported for duty to the Indian agency for they felt they had been prepared for battle their entire lives. Some even came on horseback with their own rifles not knowing where they were exactly going.

Often, such schools are highly selective, accepting only a very small percentage of applicants. Such schools often have very high admissions fees which are used to attract and hire the best teachers, and also used to provide enriched learning environments and services such as libraries, science laboratories, and computers. By LESLIE RADDATZ
    TV Guide, March 15, 1969
A computer in New York City got James MacArthur who likes to surf not far from his apartment near Diamond Head, Honolulu his job as Jack Lord's assistant in CBS's Hawaii Five-O Another actor played the part in the original, movie-length pilot of the projected television series. Before this went on the air last fall, it was shown to an audience of 1200 in New York. Each viewer held a dial which, when turned one way or the other, indicated what he liked or disliked in the film as he watched it unreel. The dials fed into a computer which showed that the audience definitely disapproved of the actor who played Lord's young assistant. It was not that they actually disliked him. Subsequent questioning revealed that they felt he was too young to hold down an important job in the fictional Hawaii Five-O unit. Thus, Leonard Freeman, creator and executive producer of the series, replaced the young actor with MacArthur. They had worked together in the motion picture "Hang Em High", and MacArthur, then 30, was old enough for the job yet youthful enough to attract tile young viewers TV shows are looking for. It was probably refreshing certainly different for James MacArthur to be helped to the role by a computer. All his professional life he has been known as the son of Helen Hayes and Charles MacArthur, the late playwright; and there have been rumblings that this fact helped account for his success as an actor featured roles in movies since he was a student at Harvard more than 10 years ago.

Irmgard Farden Aluli, the prolific composer of popular Hawaii tunes and the first living inductee into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, died yesterday in Kaiser Medical Center. She was three days shy of her 90th birthday. Aluli "hugged us with her smile and great music," radio personality Kimo Kahoano said. Kahauanu Lake of the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame called "Aunty Irmgard" a one of a kind who cannot be replaced. "She was certainly gifted by God," said Lake, chairman of the hall's advisory selection committee. During her last days, family members gathered at the hospital and sang music for her. "My grandmother played a huge role in molding our family through music," said Kapono Souza, Aluli's grandson. "The music is the medicine. It is the glue that binds us together and keeps us strong."

    Primary Education
This forms the first 6 years of education and generally covers the age range 7-13 and are known as Classes 1-6. Children who wish to continue to receive education, but are unable to find a place in a government or missionary run secondary school often continue for another three years in Classes 7-9. Admission to secondary school is based on examination - a major component of which is mastery of English. Primary education in Tarawa is widely seen as more likely to lead to a secondary school place than that in the outer islands. However, I am not aware of any studies which remove correlation with parents education and command of English. Rurubao Primary School at Bairiki caters for primary education up -to the age of 10 to 11. Volunteer expatriate teachers are sometimes employed at Rurubao. All lessons are in English. Chester Trigg is proud to say he has both Comanche and Cherokee blood in his heritage. It's a pride he's trying to install in his younger daughter as he teaches her the Native American ways, many which he had to teach himself. One thing that Trigg won't be able to pass down is the tribes' language. He doesn't recall knowing his mom, a full-blooded Comanche. While he remembers his father talking to his grandfather in Cherokee, he wasn't taught any of the language. "My daddy told me, 'Don't tell them you're Indian,'" the Mount Gilead, Ohio resident said. "You know how the blacks had to sit on the back of the bus? They wouldn't even let the Indians get on the bus. "He didn't teach it to us so we wouldn't be kicked around." It's a story similar to many told by American Indians, forced into white boarding schools and banned from using their language. Many now fear it may be a death knoll for most of these languages as tribes work to keep them alive.
