Served as president in 1841 William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), served the shortest time in office of any president in American history. He caught cold the day he was inaugurated president, and he died 30 days later. Harrison was the first president to die in office.
Harrison is best remembered as the first half of the catchy political campaign slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler too." He had received the nickname "Tippecanoe" after defeating several Indian tribes in 1811 at the Battle of Tippecanoe. The Whig Party first ran Harrison for president against Democrat Martin Van Buren in 1836. He lost. Then they ran him again in 1840. Using his colorful military career as their theme, the Whigs turned the campaign of 1840 into a circus. This time, Harrison defeated President Van Buren. Harrison was the first Whig president, and the only chief executive whose grandson (Benjamin Harrison) also became president.
During his brief term, Harrison showed an interest in running the government efficiently. He made surprise visits to government offices to check on the workers. Upon Harrison's death, his office fell to Vice President John Tyler, a former Virginia Democrat. The Whigs had nominated Tyler to attract Southern votes. But when Tyler became president, the Whigs unhappily learned that he still believed in many of the ideas of the Democratic party. He vetoed bill after bill and destroyed the Whig program in Congress.

William Harrison died one month after assuming the office of President. He is probably best know for being the first President to die in office. Elected:
The Early Years
William Harrison was born on the Berkeley Plantation in Charles City County, Virginia. Harrison grew up during the Revolutionary War, during which his home was ransacked by the British. Harrison chose medicine as his desired profession. He studied premedical studies at Hampden Sydney College. In 1791 he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Medical School in Philadelphia. Upon his arrival in Philadelphia, he learned that his father had died. He remained for a year at school, but when his money ran out he decided to join the army. Harrison fought in the Indian War in the Northwest Territories. For two years, in 1791-1800, Harrison served as the delegate of the Northwest territories to the US House. This was a non-voting position. From 1798-1799 he served as the Secretary of the Northwest Territories. From 1800-1812 Harrison served as the Governor of Indiana Territory. He was appointed to this position by John Adams. As governor, he led 300 regulars and a 650-man militia against the Indian confederacy, led by the Shawnee brothers Tecumseh and the Prophet. The Indians attacked in a pre-dawn raid near Tippecanoe Creek. The Indians were repulsed and Harrison rallied his men to an overwhelming victory. The battle earned Harrison the nickname Old Tippecanoe.

Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even only one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

The Harrison Tomb at North Bend, Ohio William Henry Harrison is claimed by at least three states: Virginia, Ohio and Indiana. He was born at Berkeley Plantation, Virginia, his family home, on February 9 th , 1773. His father, Benjamin, was a member of the Continental Congress and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. William Henry planned to be a medical doctor, but because of lack of funds after his fathers death, he made the military his career. By 1792 the ambitious young man was an aide-de-camp to General "Mad" Anthony Wayne during the Ohio Indian Wars. He fought bravely at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. He rose to the rank of Captain after receiving the command of Fort Washington at Cincinnati. There he met Anna Symmes (1774- 1864) who was the daughter of Judge John Symmes. John Cleves Symmes was
a land baron who had purchased the land between the Miami and Little Miami Rivers known as the "Symmes Purchase". He sold plots of land to settlers. William Henry and Anna eloped and Judge Symmes was furious thinking it a bad match for his daughter. When asked how he expected to support a wife, Harrison said

    Harrison, William Henry
, ninth president of the United States (March 4-April 4, 1841). Born into a wealthy slave-owning family in Charles City County, Virginia, Harrison served as governor of Indiana Territory and negotiated numerous treaties that opened up new lands to white settlers. He became an Indian fighter, defeating Shawnee chief Tecumseh 's forces at the Battle of Tippecanoe (November 7, 1811). As a brigadier general in the War of 1812 , he defeated British and Indian forces in the Battle of the Thames , during which Tecumseh was killed. Harrison served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate from Ohio. Nominated by the Whig party for president in 1836, he lost to Democrat Martin Van Buren. In the election of 1840 , as the "log cabin and hard cider" candidate, Harrison became the first Whig president. Using torchlight parades, coonskin caps, and popular songs, the Whigs emphasized antics rather than issues. "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" was the campaign slogan. Harrison, in a cold, pouring rain, gave the longest inauguration speech ever delivered, contracted pneumonia, and died a month later. He served the shortest time in office of any president and was the first to die in office.
