    Inaugural Addresses of US Presidents
It has been a tradition for each US President to begin each term of office with a speech at his inauguration. A few of these speeches give real insight into a presidency, or that state of the country at the time. Others are more quotidien. The more important ones are highlighted below. All these texts are located at the University of Oklahoma Chronology of US Historical Documents site.

William Henry Harrison: A Presidential Unit William Henry Harrison, the 9th US President, was born 9 Feb 1773 in Virginia. Political Party: Whig
    Years Served: 4 Mar 1841 – 4 Apr 1841
    Vice President(s): John Tyler
Name of his parents: Benjamin Harrison and Elizabeth Bassett Harrison
    Wife’s name: Anna Tuthill Symmes
    Yearly Salary as President: $25,000.00
Physical Stature: 5 feet, 8 inches
    State of Birth: Viriginia
“William Henry Harrison was a descendant of a prominent Virginia family. His early schooling was at home. He left college before graduation to study medicine. When his father died, he joined the army. After seven years of military career he entered politics. As governor of the Indiana Territory he was victorious agains the Native Americans at the Battle of Tippecanoe, and again showed his military skill in the War of 1812. After that war he resigned again from military life. He ran his farm, was a state and US senator and a diplomat. He was unsuccessful in 1836 in his bid for the presidency, but in 1840 he won on the slogan “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too.” He caught cold at his inauguration. It turned into pneumonia and he died after only thirty-two days in office. He was not president long enough to put any programs into effect, so it is difficult to say if he was a successful president.”

Related Category: U.S. History, Biographies A group of Whig Anti-Masons nominated Harrison for President in 1836, and in 1840, Webster went over to Harrison's candidacy for the presidency as a Whig. Clay, although bitterly disappointed, had to support Harrison. The campaign that followed was the first of the "rip-roaring" campaigns in U.S. history. Harrison and his running mate, John Tyler , were transformed by publicity. Harrison, an aristocratic Virginian, was made into a simple backwoods frontiersman, Tyler into his faithful lieutenant. The "Log Cabin and Hard Cider" campaign was launched in answer to ill-judged jeers from the supporters of the Democratic candidate, Martin Van Buren . Van Buren was pictured as an effete, "silver-spoon" man, Harrison as a rugged Westerner, despite his Virginia upbringing. "Tippecanoe and Tyler too" won : partly because the Panic of 1837 had turned many against Van Buren. Harrison then selected a brilliant Whig cabinet headed by Webster and adopted a program outlined by Clay, but the strain of the campaign was too much. He died a month later, Tyler became President, and the Whig party fell prey to factionalism.

The 9th U.S. President and the first from Ohio, William Henry Harrison sits astride a horse at the west end of Piatt Park. Harrison, whose home was just west of Cincinnati in North Bend, led a successful political campaign as an Indian fighter and war hero. Unfortunately, he died from pneumonia, a month after his inauguration in 1841, which is the shortest term of office of any U.S. president. Artist Rebisso's portrayal of Harrison is the only equestrian sculpture in Cincinnati, and the horse's elevated front leg indicates his rider was wounded in battle. This piece, like other early monuments, was commissioned through public subscriptions.
