The historical musical instruments in the Vleeshuis
Stradivarius among Harpsichord Builders
The Ruckers-Couchet family dominated the Antwerp production of keyboard instruments from the end of the 16th until the middle of the 17th century. Their harpsichords found their way into all European countries and some even travelled as far as South America.
The instruments built by Hans, Joannes and Andreas Ruckers (first half of the 17th century) are exhibited on a platform on the ground floor. They are flanked by some harpsichords from Antwerp builders, active during the second half of the 18th century (Jacobus van den Elsche and Joannes Petrus Bull).
In the centre of the hall on the ground floor, a number of Antwerp harpsichord from the 17th century are displayed on a platform. Most instruments are built by members of the Ruckers-Couchet family. This family of harpsichord builders dominated the production in Antwerp at the end of the 16th century and during the first half of the 17th century.
The sound boxes of the Ruckers harpsichords are often painted with imitation marble designs. Inside flowers and insects are drawn on the soundboard. Around the upright boards above the soundboard, above and along the keys and on the inside of the lid decorative paper is glued with arabesques and dolphin motives in black against a white background. The lid often has moralising inscriptions. The inside of the lid is often decorated with a charming scene.

American Society of Ancient Instruments
The emblem is based on fifteenth century manuscript style. The music is from a song written about 1400 by Baude Cordier with words particularly fitted to the goal of the Society. 'Vous fais le don d'un chanson nouvelle - I make you the gift of a new song.'
What is the American Society of Ancient Instruments? The six centuries before 1700 produced in Europe a music which remains rich and vital for the audience of today. It is music not generally heard in the concert hall and until recently it was almost unknown. It is music worth hearing, however, not as a curiosity or by some select group, but simply because it is good music. The American Society of Ancient Instruments presents this music on the instruments for which it was written. Performed by artists familiar with the techniques and ideals of its time, the music is revealed as a fresh, vigorous language of human beings who have not only a part of our heritage; it is still very much alive. The ensemble of the Society consists of a quartet of viols and a harpsichord, each played by a specialist devoted to becoming as skillful as possible on his chosen instrument. When the music planned for a concert calls for additional instruments, guest artists are invited to play with the Society.

Authoritative yet inspired, today's harpsichordists are masters of their instruments as never before. The resurgence of interest in period music has led to a rediscovery of the spirit of baroque compositions and the harpsichord's subtle resonance. Audiences are drawn to this instrument in growing numbers, while established fans are intrigued by its expanding repertoire. In anticipation of the forthcoming harpsichord festival (les Journées du clavecin) and the Montreal International Harpsichord Competition, featuring French composers and scheduled for June 3 to 6 at the Salle Pierre-Mercure in the Pierre-Péladeau Centre, we talked to four experts in the art of the harpsichord Catherine Perrin, Geneviève Soly, Hank Knox, and Réjean Poirier. Renaissance The harpsichord owes its current renaissance to the rise of interpretative schools in the recent past. These have had a significant effect on both the building and playing of the instrument. It was after musicians began using period instruments (or modern reproductions) that things began to develop, says harpsichordist and organist Réjean Poirier, dean of the Faculty of Music at the Université de Montréal. "Until the early 1960s, the harpsichord revival focused on Wanda Landowska's approach to the instrument. Musicians looked at the instrument from a modern standpoint, however. They didn't play old instruments, and the repertoire was still being rediscovered. The importance of the instrument the need to find a good instrument was not considered. Generally speaking, people were doing a great deal of research to try to recapture the spirit of baroque music, but the return to period instruments was just beginning."

Joannes Daniel Dulcken was, except for the Ruckers family, considered to be the leading exponent of Flemish harpsichord making. In contrast to most Italian instruments, the cases of Flemish harpsichords were very massive. The soundboard of this splendid instrument (with two manuals) has floral motives done in gouache, while the case itself is embellished with gold rocailles and flowered garlands painted on a red ground. The painting on the lid was probably added later, in Austria, and dates from the second half of the 18th century.

elcome to Zuckermann Harpsichords International and this showcase of its custom D J acques W ay finished instruments, Zuckermann standard finished instruments, instrument part sets, individual parts, and accessories. ZHI is the world's leading maker of superior-quality harpsichords, spinets, virginals, clavichords, and fortepianos. Many of our instruments feature the designs of the late David Jacques Way, who was dedicated to researching and understanding keyboard instruments from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The modern harpsichord derives from several countries and historical periods, but every harpsichord or virginal works in the same way: when a key is pressed, its far end elevates a slip of wood called a jack. The jack is fitted with a plectrum of bird quill or extremely durable plastic that plucks the string. The string vibrates and transmits its energy to the soundboard, which vibrates in response, creating pressure waves in the air surrounding it. These waves are transmitted to the ears, and through a complex mechanical and neurological process the brain converts that energy into the incomparable glittering, majestic sound of the harpsichord.
A harpsichord is more than simply an instrument upon which one makes music; it is also a decorative object, a visual as well as an aural feast. The decoration of our custom-finished instruments is based on the best extant antiques, seeking not to copy them as much as to recreate their baroque and early-classical motifs. The result, enlivened by a soundboard painting and gold bands and moldings, is in an instrument of ageless beauty.
