And is playable.
Specifications include a 1 x 8' disposition (single choir (one string per note), middle C corresponds to middle C on other instruments), single manual (one keyboard), 61 note range (5 octaves, C-c'''', A415), 6 x 3 ft. dimension, approximate 150 lbs. weight, and an estimated 100,000 LEGO piece count. The strings (brass gauges .012-.018 and steel gauges .008-.012) exert approximately 325 lbs. of tension. Audio example It's taken two years of theorizing, designing, collecting parts, building, testing, and rebuilding. Originally, upon thinking about the potentials of making a LEGO musical instrument, I had hoped to reproduce a piano, but ditched the idea due to the enormous tension involved (40,000 lbs.)there's a reason why pianos have steel frames. Its ancestor, the harpsichord, seemed more practically possiblethe key/jack workings are simple levers, the strings are plucked, it's smaller, and it maintains less tension. Coincidentally, I was in my Bach phase anyways.
The important considerations during design were strength, efficiency, and durability. Anticipating the tension of the strings, the instrument had to be built strong, yet be able to incorporate the functions and mechanisms on a lifesize scale. With many moving parts, it also had to withstand the repeated demands of a keyboard instrument. Several prototypes of the various sections were made. After finalizing designs, I started amassing the necessary LEGO parts.

Webside greetings! As you can see I've been building keyboard instruments based on original historical instruments for almost thirty years. I try to determine the type of music my client will play, and present to them optional solutions. A few of my recent clients have specialized in music of the renaissance which requires smaller, more colorful instruments. Although I've built the following double manual harpsichords: Dulcken #1 lives in Toronto. Dulcken #2 lives in Austria. My two manual Zell lives here in Seattle and has been recorded and my two manual Bellot also lives here. If I build more doubles they will be like my copy of the 1667 anon. French in the Boston museum. I also very much like the Tibaut and the Denis doubles. There are far too many makers who turn out the 18th century Blanchet, Hemsh, and Dulckens for me to complete with and I personally like building small practical instruments that most people can afford. I am passionate over small extrovert Italian instruments which are easy to maintain and move about. I feel strongly that the true musician should seriously explore the Clavichord since it is so challenging

Annotated List of Instruments
by Dr. R. Dean Anderson The following list documents all extant harpsichords presently known to have been built or rebuilt in France during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Also included are a few instruments that survived into the twentieth century but have since been lost or destroyed. The instruments in the annotated list are divided into three periods that coincide with the reigns of Louis XIV (1643-1715), Louis XV (1715-1774) and Louis XVI (1774-1793). Each period subdivides into three groups. The first includes instruments emanating from Paris, the hub of French musical activity during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the second, instruments from Lyon and the Rhône Valley, which exhibit many similarities; and the third, instruments from other French provinces. The instrument entries are arranged chronologically according to the first known (or supposed) date of work done on the instrument in a French workshop. Most undated instruments for which little information is available are grouped together at the end of each period division. Ascription to a particular time period (e.g., the seventeenth century) is based on an instrument's design, style of decoration, and/or relationship to other instruments. This list is a very much abbreviated version of an annotated list and essay on French harpsichords published in Early Keyboard Journal Information in the instrument entries is organized according to the categories below.

Introduction
These samples are each approximately fifteen seconds long, files of about 300K, dubbed from compact discs. The "CD info" links each go to an appropriate entry at another site where you may learn more about or purchase the disc. In some cases, they also have better sound samples from these albums, using RealAudio or other formats. These sound samples (all in stereo) are of reasonable quality but are certainly not great: they do not represent accurately the sound quality of the recordings. They are here primarily for use in rough comparisons among the instruments: the basic features of the sound. The actual instruments sound quite a bit different, especially regarding high harmonics. If possible, play and listen to representative instruments in person, or find these and other similar recordings. On the plus side, all these samples are distorted similarly by the CD-sampling utility I used...it's a level playing field. The utility was an early one (1996), and I probably should remake all of these samples someday....

Harpsichord (Italian cembalo; French clavecin), stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are plucked to produce sound. It was developed in Europe in the 14th or 15th century and was widely used from the 16th to the early 19th century, when it was superseded by the piano. In the 20th century the harpsichord was revived for performance of music of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, as well as for new compositions. The incisive sound quality of the plucked metal strings adds clarity to melodic lines. The harpsichord is particularly effective in performing contrapuntal music—that is, music that consists of two or more melodies played at the same time, such as that of the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
The earliest school of harpsichord building developed in Italy in the 16th and 17th centuries. Italian harpsichords differed from others in that they normally were made of extremely thin wood and then placed in a stronger outer case of the same shape. A second important school of building developed in the 16th and 17th centuries in Flanders, centered around the influential Ruckers family of builders. These schools gave way in the 18th century to distinctive styles of building that developed in France (the Blachet family), Germany (the Hass family), and England (Jacob Kirkman). Harpsichords of the different national schools varied in details of their proportions and construction, resulting in slight, although characteristic differences in tone color.
