Warren G. Harding (1865-1923), 29th president of the United States, espoused a "back to normalcy" policy at a time when citizens were war-weary. However, his administration is mainly remembered for its corruption, revealed after his death. The eldest of eight children, born in Corsica, Ohio, on November 2, 1865 to George Tryon and Phoebe Dickerson Harding, Warren G. Harding led an active life in his youth. Besides performing the demanding chores of a typical pioneer farm, he played alto horn, and took a turn at managing the citizen's cornet band, which won several competitions. He entered speaking contests, and participated in sports. Though his career in the Senate was unspectacular, Harding's ability as a harmonizer, after the Progressive party split of 1912, drew him into the national leadership of the Republican party. After World War I, he and other "strict reservationists" of the Republican senatorial majority, defeated the treaty of the League of Nations, on the grounds that it would limit national sovereignty. With the business decline of 1920, the rise in unemployment, and farming prosperity depressed, Americans upset by the sacrifices and disappointments of the war years blamed the Democrat party. When Harding was chosen as a compromise candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, he easily defeated the opposing contender, James M. Cox.

Served as president from 1921 to 1923 Warren Gamaliel Harding (1865-1923), was elected president by a people weary of wartime restraints and world problems. His supporters expected him to turn back the clock and restore the more carefree atmosphere of pre-World War I days. Harding, an easygoing newspaper publisher and senator, encouraged this belief by campaigning on the slogan of "Back to Normalcy." Actually, Americans would probably have elected any Republican candidate to the White House in 1920 in protest against the policies of Democratic President Woodrow Wilson. They opposed particularly Wilson's definition of American ideals, and his unwillingness to accept any changes in his plan for a League of Nations. They wished to reduce their responsibilities in world affairs and to resume their normal activities with as little bother as possible.
It was easier to praise "normalcy" than to produce it during the Roaring Twenties. The word meant so many different things to different people. Some were rebels. They danced in cabarets, drank bootleg gin, and poked fun at "normal" American life in novels and plays. Others, reacting against the rebels, wanted to standardize thought and behavior. This group persecuted radicals, tried to enforce prohibition, and fought to ban the teaching of evolution in the public schools. With so many crosscurrents at work in American society, Harding was bound to annoy somebody as soon as he did anything.

Warren G. Harding
Harding was born and lived most of his life in Ohio. He was one of seven Presidents from Ohio. He was a Baptist. He campaigned for the presidency by meeting visiting groups on his front porch in Marion, Ohio. He was the first candidate to hire a speechwriter. At 24, he suffered a nervous breakdown and spent several weeks in a sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan. His presidency is ranked by historians as one of the worst, perhaps one step above President Grant's ranking. Warren G. Harding once lost all the White House china gambling, on one hand of cards. Warren Harding formally concluded WWI Loudspeakers were used at his inauguration for the first time in the event's history. His dog, Laddie Boy, delivered his newspaper each day. The dog had a birthday party and a cake made of dog biscuits. He also had his own chair for cabinet meetings. Harding coined the word "normalcy." Nan Britton claimed in a sensational book, President's Daughter that Harding had fathered her daughter, Elizabeth Ann. Carrie Phillips, the wife of one of Harding's best friends, was involved in a 10-year affair with him. He also maintained a room next to the Oval Office for quick liaisons.

Warren G. Harding - 29th President of the United States
Photograph of Warren G. Harding. Left profile (National Archives) Warren G. Harding was the 29th (1921-1923) President of the United States. He was born in Blooming Grove, Morrow County, Ohio, November 2, 1865 and graduated from Ohio Central College at Iberia. Warren G. Harding from Ohio was the first sitting Senator to be elected President. Before becoming a Senator, he was a newspaper publisher and Governor of Ohio. A relative unknown outside his own state, Harding was a compromise candidate, who won the Republican nomination due to the political machinations of his friends. Before receiving the nomination, he was asked whether there were any embarrassing episodes in his past that might be used against him. He had a very limited formal education, suffered from depression, had spent several years in a sanitarium, had a rocky relationship with his wife (whom he referred to as "the Duchess"), had a longstanding affair with the wife of an old friend, and was a drinker despite Prohibition. Though he answered no, each of these issues was raised by his opponents during his presidency.

I was recently contacted by a chess player I know from the fourth grade (I was a scholastic player before they had scholastic players) and he wrote me a letter about Warren G. Harding, whom he believes may be a close relative. Warren G. Harding died on August 2, 1923 at age 58 inside the Palace Hotel on Market Street in San Francisco, which is now known as the Sheraton Palace Hotel. At the moment that Harding died, the Western Chess Championship, now known as the US Open Chess Championship, was being played across the street at the Mechanics Institute.

You were a good man, Warren Harding!

I discovered this fact when I was in the San Francisco Public Library looking through 1923 editions of the San Francisco Call, the leading newspaper in San Francisco at the time, looking for games and results in the Western Chess Championship being played, when the newspapers blared out that Harding had died. The co-winner of the chess tournament was Norman T. Whitaker

, twenty-ninth president of the United States. Harding presided over an administration marred by scandal but successful in reducing political acrimony and establishing policies pursued throughout the 1920s. Born near Blooming Grove, Ohio, Harding attended Ohio Central College (1879-1882) and in 1884 became owner-editor of the Marion Star. In 1891 he married Florence Kling DeWolfe, who helped him make the newspaper a commercial success. Politically, he affiliated with Ohio's Old Guard Republicans and with their support was elected to two terms in the state senate (1900-1904) and one as lieutenant governor (1904-1906). He lost the gubernatorial contest in 1910 but was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914. As senator, he was noted for his affability, party regularity, and skills as a political harmonizer. But he demonstrated few leadership qualities and had no important legislation identified with his name. Most of the scandals besmirching Harding's reputation—the Teapot Dome oil leasing scandals, fraudulent transactions in the Veterans Bureau and Justice Department, and his extramarital affairs involving Nan Britton and Carrie Phillips—came to light only after his death. He had, however, learned enough about the corruption associated with his administration to be deeply worried, and this probably contributed to the stroke that killed him while he was returning from a speaking tour of Alaska.

Warren Harding was born in Corsica (now known as Blooming Grove), Ohio on November 2, 1865. His family lived in Caledonia, Ohio until they moved to Marion when he was 18 years old. Eventually acquiring the Marion Star newspaper, he became a popular businessman, public speaker, and Republican politician. He married Florence DeWolfe (her second marriage) in 1891. She was five years his senior and was, for her day and age, a very strong willed, well educated, and very inde- pendent woman. She ran the circulation depart- ment of the Marion Star for her husband. RIDAY, MARCH 4, 1921 Senator Harding from Ohio was the first sitting Senator to be elected President. A former newspaper publisher and Governor of Ohio, the President-elect rode to the Capitol with President Wilson in the first automobile to be used in an inauguration. President Wilson had suffered a stroke in 1919, and his fragile health prevented his attendance at the ceremony on the East Portico of the Capitol. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Edward White, using the Bible from George Washington's first inauguration. The address to the crowd at the Capitol was broadcast on a loudspeaker. A simple parade followed.
My Countrymen: When one surveys the world about him after the great storm, noting the marks of destruction and yet rejoicing in the ruggedness of the things which withstood it, if he is an American he breathes the clarified atmosphere with a strange mingling of regret and new hope. We have seen a world passion spend its fury, but we contemplate our Republic unshaken, and hold our civilization secure. Libertyliberty within the lawand civilization are inseparable, and though both were threatened we find them now secure; and there comes to Americans the profound assurance that our representative government is the highest expression and surest guaranty of both. The recorded progress of our Republic, materially and spiritually, in itself proves the wisdom of the inherited policy of noninvolvement in Old World affairs. Confident of our ability to work out our own destiny, and jealously guarding our right to do so, we seek no part in directing the destinies of the Old World. We do not mean to be entangled. We will accept no responsibility except as our own conscience and judgment, in each instance, may determine.
