As U.S. Senator from 1915-1921, Harding had an undistinguished career. Harding was present for less than one-third of the roll-call votes. Warren G. Harding, one of America's Greatest Presidents by Murrell Selden
My grandmother, who was Edna Mae Harding, was a geneologist. She wrote Selden and Kindred of Virginia, an in depth book about the Selden Family. But, she never wrote a single thing about the Harding family. I always figured it was that (since she came from PA near OH) that it was because she was ashamed of being related to Warren G. Harding, former President of the USA. I cannot imagine what the relationship would be exactly.
Warren G. Harding (1865-1923)
Recently, a TV program (on cable) featured Warren G. Harding. I was surprised to find that three scandals occurred in his Presidency. But, historians said that he was not directly responsible for any of them. True, his Dept. of Interior appointee, had sold illegally, interests to Sinclair Oil. But, they said, about "Teapot Dome" that Harding had died and never knew anything about it. He was really not responsible at all. He was not responsible for the two other minor scandals either, though his people were involved. After learning more about Harding, I think my grandmother had nothing to be ashamed of at all. I now believe Harding was one of America's greatest presidents.

American President Warren G. Harding, 1865-1923
America's 29th President, Warren G. Harding entered the White House with the greatest majority vote ever achieved at the time, but died mysteriously during his third year of office, surrounded by scandal. Openly known to have secured the Republican nomination for his deportment more than his politics, Warren G. Harding died August 2nd, 1923 of unspecified causes. The oldest of 8 children, Warren Gamaliel Harding was born on November 2nd, 1865 to George and Phoebe Harding in Blooming Grove , Ohio. George Harding abandoned farming early in Warren's childhood to become a self-appointed physician, enabling his eldest son to attend Ohio Central College. An unimpressive student, Warren Harding left the university in his third year and experimented with a number of professions until his father helped him purchase the Marion Star, a weekly newspaper facing foreclosure in their adopted hometown of Marion in 1884. Though inexperienced in journalism and business, Harding kept the paper afloat, largely through the push of his own personality. Welcomed as a newspaper owner and editor into the Marion social and fraternal societies, Warren G. Harding picked up support through his many connections, which included poker playing clubs as often as upright civic organizations. Harding's active social life led to an introduction to

WARREN HARDING 29th U.S. President One can almost feel sorry for Harding, who consistently gets ranked as one of the worst presidents of all time. A former newspaperman and senator from Ohio, Harding was ill-suited to the presidency but was chosen as a compromise candidate on the 10th ballot of the 1920 Republican convention. He was inaugurated in 1921 and took over the White House from two-term Democrat Woodrow Wilson . Harding's administration is chiefly remembered for the Teapot Dome scandal, a messy tale of bribery, fraud, and federal oil reserves. Harding died suddenly in San Francisco during a 1923 cross-country tour and was succeeded by his vice president, Calvin Coolidge

http://www.mistersf.com/notorious/notharding.htm
Notorious SF: Warren G. Harding If 29th President of the United States Warren G. Harding had lived long enough he may have liked San Francisco. With his penchant for poker and cronyism, the Ohio Republican who was elected by a wide margin in 1920 may have fit right in. Did I say Ohio Republican? Scratch the invitation. Harding died at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco on August 23, 1923 under circumstances that began as mysterious and were then varnished by rumor in the aftermath of scandals and salacious revelations that surfaced following the president's demise. The ailing president arrived in San Francisco and to the Palace Hotel where he died either of anxiety, a stroke, a heart attack, food poisoning, or from deliberate poisoning by First Lady Florence, fed up with her husband's philandering. The legend continues that Mrs. Harding's psychic had, on the eve of his nomination, predicted the president would die in office. The fact that Mrs. Harding refused to allow an autopsy of the president contributed to suspicion of her. A book was published in 1930 that detailed the case against the First Lady. The official cause of President Harding's death is listed as a stroke. In a contemporary book, The Strange Deaths of President Harding, historian Robert H. Ferrell lays out the facts behind these allegations and makes the following conclusions: It was a heart attack that caused Harding's death, not poison. Harding did not know much about the scandals looming in Washington D.C. at the time of his death. There is no proof of an illegitimate child, the existence of which has been said to have driven Florence to the crime. Ferrell asks for a reexamination of Harding's place in American history.

done and dusted Ellroy predicts that my writing will undergo a radical departure. He’s planning a novel about warren G. harding, us president between 1921
http://www.modestyarbor.com/warrengharding.html
SUMMARY: A project under consideration by Ellroy and mentioned during several interviews while on tour to promote "The Cold Six Thousand," in 2001. The Guardian was the first to write about Ellroy's intended project: “With one more book in the current trilogy to complete, Ellroy is casting around for a change of direction. He's looking to write a historical-political novel on the life of Warren Harding, US president between 1916 and 1924. Language and style will have to be adapted and changed but the essential theme of all his books — the morally and socially corrupted, white Anglo-Saxon heterosexual American man in extremis — will remain intact." The Scotsman also found Ellroy mulling the Harding book in early May, 2001: "After this trilogy is done and dusted Ellroy predicts that 'my writing will undergo a radical departure.' He’s planning a novel about Warren G. Harding, US president between 1921-23. "'Purely historical fiction,'" claims Ellroy. But is it possible to write about the history of America without reference to crime? It’s the only question that gives him pause. 'No, I don’t think it is,' he says finally. 'You know what Balzac said? ‘Behind every great fortune there’s a great crime,’ and I think behind every great moment in history or political movement, crime lurks.'" In May 2001, the author restated his intent to write the Harding book to Time Magazine's Terry McCarthy. He told McCarthy a possible plot point would hinge on rumors that some of Harding's family "was black."

Longevity of U.S. Presidents
Ed Uthman, MD
Diplomate, American Board of Pathology
Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-

Warren G. Harding : (The American Presidents Series) > Customer Review #1: An Attempt at Rehabilitation

John W. Dean sets himself up a formidable task in his mini-biography of Warren G. Harding, the latest in the "American Presidents" series. Harding is generally considered by historians to be one of the worst presidents in history, if not at the absolute bottom of the barrel. His administration was marred by the nastiest White House scandal until Watergate half a century later. How can such a tarnished figure be rehabilitated? Yet thats exactly what Dean has tried to do, with mixed results. Dean says in his Introduction that Harding has been the victim of a grave injustice by historians who have ignored "much of the relevant information about Harding and his presidency." This is a personal matter with Dean, who has long been fascinated with Harding and who grew up in Hardings hometown of Marion, Ohio. So Dean definitely has an agenda to portray Harding in as positive a light as he possibly can, given the facts.
