A man once came to a Rabbi and said, “Rabbi, please teach my child Torah.” The Rabbi answered, “If you study Torah, your child will study Torah willingly and with great enthusiasm. If you do not study Torah, but only ask me to teach your child, your child will only come to another Rabbi to teach his child Torah, but will never truly study Torah with all his heart. It is a common practice to want to make sure that our children are equipped with the proper values and knowledge. Too often, however, we neglect our own study and spiritual development. Jewish tradition tells us that we should also continue our Jewish journey by proper study, prayer and practice. One of the celebrations which we frequently view as mostly for the children is Hanukkah. It is true that much of the ritual is attractive to our young ones, much more so that say, Yom Kippur. But proper study of Hanukkah can produce new and useful interpretations. Therefore, let us take a few moments to examine a few possibilities. In the time of the Maccabees, there were two struggles going on. The first and more well known was the fight against the external forces. The Grecco Syrians had taken control of Israel and were forcing the Hebrew to adopt their ways and customs. The Maccabbees were few in number and ill equipped compared to the invading forces. Yet, through patience and perserverance, the few were able to overcome the mighty. There was also an internal struggle. Some Jews found the Greek culture very inviting. There were those who were all too willing to capitulate.

by Robin Sampson T If you ask a homeschooler about balancing subjects, many without realizing it, would look at the situation as assigning weights by periods of time something like the image above: Bible on one side with academics on the other. We begin mentally scheduling how much time should be spent in each "subject." Using this analogy how much weight should the 3Rs get? How much weight should the Bible get? Who decided on the time period of one hour subjects? And who decided that all children learn in the same way with the same exposure? Who decided all subjects should be taught one hour a day? If the Bible is a one hour study time should 3Rs be 3 more hours? Would it be the same for a four year old and a 17 year old? The problem with this mentality is we usually think about the states requirements concerning education instead of God's requirements. We are putting the wrong items on the scales! It should NOT be Bible on one side and 3Rs on the other. They are not in competition with each other. The 3Rs are the tools to help you reach the goal. Our GoalGod's will should be on one side and everything we can get our hands on to prepare our children to balance the scales.

Seven Principles of Bible Study

G Principle #1 If the events and people of the Hebrew scriptures are not interpreted in the context of who they were and the responsibility to which they were called, we will fail to derive the intended benefit of studying the scriptures and we will miss some very important biblical principles that permeate all of the Word of God. Principle #2 Throughout all of the scriptures, the recognition and respect for eldership is a consistent principle. The older were always accorded superior respect. The violation of this principle of eldership has had another deadly result. The vast majority of church tradition elevates the New Testament above the Hebrew scriptures. The ramifications of this practice are enormous and have spawned, among other things, anti-Semitism and arrogance towards the Jewish people, the very thing Paul warned against in Romans 11:17-18! "...do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. The writers of the New Testament, well trained in this principle, upheld it without compromise. The ranking of Jacob (James) before Peter and Peter before John, etc. in the original order of the books was intentional and in keeping with the principle of respect that had been handed down throughout the generations of Israel. It is difficult to measure the magnitude of damage done to biblical truth by the abandonment of this ancient Hebraic principle since the fourth century.

CLEARWATER - It was a random act of kindness that touched hearts and rekindled faith. With the help of teachers Stacy Pio and Dawn Kidwell, 3-year-old students at A Rainbow of Love Learning Center made Hanukkah cards for the nearby Kent Jewish Center Preschool. The cards read, "Happy Hanukkah Greetings from your friends around the corner at A Rainbow of Love Learning Center." They were delivered Tuesday morning, and the timing could not have been better. At the Kent Jewish Center, the adults were still shocked by a weekend hate crime in St. Petersburg. During the night Saturday, vandals cut holes through a series of vinyl posters from an exhibition titled Coexistence. The art was part of a Florida Holocaust Museum exhibit that had been shown in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland and South Africa. There was never a problem until it came to St. Petersburg. Making the greeting cards had nothing to do with the weekend vandalism. The teachers at Rainbow of Love say their kids simply enjoy doing things for others.

Those who think Hanukkah is the Jewish Christmas have it almost right: Hanukkah is the holiday of being Jewish amidst the Christmas tide. Consider Hanukkah's place in the Jewish year: a minor holiday not commanded by the Torah, barely mentioned by the Talmud. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are holidays for the soul. Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot recall the forging of the Jewish people through their journey from Egyptian slavery to Israel and freedom. Hanukkah, along with Purim, recalls the later story of being Jewish in a non-Jewish world, a world where Judea could not simply close its borders against an increasingly globalized civilization. How does a community maintain its identity in relation to the broader culture? How much should outside influences be resisted, and how much embraced? How much do we depend upon God to save us and how much upon ourselves? These were the questions that burned in the Jews in the time of the Maccabbees more than 2100 years ago. It was the renewed relevance of these questions which propelled Hanukkah, for centuries a minor festivity, to a central place in the Jewish calendar of the 20th century.

27th December 2000 On the 27th December 2000, at a very critical time in the history of Israel, The Temple Mount and Land of Israel Faithful Movement marched from the tombs of the Maccabees in Modi'in to Biblical Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. Together with them were many Israelis and visitors from outside Israel. The date of the march was not an accident. The march was held on the same day that President Clinton asked Prime Minister Barak to give him an answer regarding his proposals to give the Temple Mount, most of Biblical Jerusalem and 95% of Judea, Samaria and Gaza to the "Palestinian Authority". by Judie Haynes The diversity in many classrooms provides a starting point for children to begin to understand and value the many distinct cultures of the world. What better way to do that than to feature a winter unit on light festivals from around the world. Teach your students about the cultural traditions in France, Sweden, Thailand, Philippines, India, Egypt, Holland, and Mexico. More light festivals will be added so keep checking back. When English language learners see their home cultures and languages being studied in the classroom, they feel their culture has been validated. This helps to develop positive self-esteem in culturally and linguistically diverse children. Introduce this unit by having students find out how to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year's in different languages.

According to folk tradition, December 13th follows the longest night of the year in Sweden. During the winter there are only a few hours of sunlight each day. St. Lucia is honored this day with her wreath of candles.

RABBI SHLOMO RISKIN Vayeshev/Genesis 37:1-40:23 Is our God primarily creator of the universe, lord of nature and the cyclical seasons of the calendar, or is God primarily the invisible director of historical events, guardian of Israel who is the eventual redeemer? It's timely to raise questions based upon Maimonides' - the Rambam's - laws of Hanukkah - and at the same time answer this question.

Hanukkah is here, that special time of year. The time of bitter sweet rejoicing. A time for family. A time for rededication. A time to focus on the promise of the resurrection. A time to let your menorah shine before men. Did you know that we are commanded to teach our children about Hanukkah? Look up the Scripture in Proverbs 22:6. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. The Hebrew word for "train up" in this verse is chanuk Chanuk (pronounced with a gutter "ch" - "h" sound) is the root word in Hanukkah and it means dedication. The Exegeses Bible puts it this way: Hanukkah up a lad . So we are encouraged by the Scriptures to teach our children about Hanukkah (Dedication) to the Lord Yahweh. Here are some suggestions to make Hanukkah memories that will last a lifetime:
Read the story of Hannah and her seven sons from 2 Maccabees 7:1-42 and 4 Maccabees 8:1-18:21. The Maccabees books are found in the Apocrypha of some Bibles. It is a powerful teaching about one family's dedication and determination to serve the God of Israel and Him only no matter what the cost. Hannah's steadfast testimony for the Word of God is one of courage and endurance to the end.
