Special of the month for December!
"Emmanuel" & "Hanukkah" Tape Series Hanukkah Dreidels. Hanukkiyah. Gifts. Tradition! Each winter, the Feast of Hanukkah is celebrated to commemorate The Jewish People’s freedom to worship the God of Israel, and the miraculous events surrounding this holiday. It goes back to 165 B.C. Led by Judah Maccabee, a small group of courageous Israeli warriors overcame Greco-Syrian tyrant Antiochus Epiphanies and his numerically superior forces, to liberate, cleanse, and rededicate the Temple of God in Jerusalem. Why did Jesus keep the feast of Hanukkah as recorded in John 10:22,23? Does Hanukkah teach us something about Messiah Himself? Is Hanukkah for the Believer in Yeshua today? Study with noted Bible teacher Sam Nadler this illuminating subject and discover how a great miracle really did happen here!

Opinions and debates, analysis of issues, sources and interpretations
The story of Hanukkah , as it has taken shape over the years, is oft-retold: a Temple liberated, occupiers expelled, and a small, miraculous cruse of oil is found. But historical narrative is rarely so tidy. Many factors complicate the picture: multiple Books of Maccabees with agenda-driven authors; questions about where the story of the oil miracle originated and what role it plays in thinking about Hanukkah; the Maccabees' ambiguous legacy; and contemporary issues of Christmas' influence on Hanukkah. The resulting festival, though, is one of celebration and joy that also evokes serious questions about Jewish identity and values. · Does Hanukkah teach a political or spiritual message? · What does it mean to publicize the miracle of Hanukkah? · How can the message of Hanukkah be incorporated in the modern world?

(Feast of Dedication) Review
I trust that you have been following along in chronological order on this Temple diagram. If you haven't, then this discussion may not make sense to you since it has been built upon the previous 18 links, beginning with the link titled "1st Day" and wrapping around, through "Fast of Gedaliah" and arriving here, at Hanukkah. The days of creation, the major Feast Days, and the minor Feast and Fast Days all speak of Messiah and the plan of salvation. If you have been following our Temple Foundation in chronological order, then you have plenty of information about Messiah to consider up to this point. I have also asked you to consider the chances of Yeshua being the Messiah. The following is a summary of what has been introduced through three stages of salvation about Messiah and Yeshua: About Messiah About Yeshua He is the Light of world, the Perfect Passover Lamb of God, and He is a Living Covenant [Isaiah 42:6-7; 53:7; Daniel 9:25-26] He is the Light of world, the Perfect Passover Lamb of God, and He is the Word of God made flesh [John 1:1, 14, 28-29; 8:12]

Celebrated December 20th -December 27th, 2003
~Actually begins at sunset on December 19th~ Hanukkah , pronounced HAH nu kah, is the Jewish Feast of Lights or Feast of Dedication. The Hebrew word hanukkah (also written Hannuka; Hanukah or Chanukah) means dedication. The Hanukkah holiday begins on the eve of the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev (approximately December) and lasts eight days.
During Hanukkah, gifts are exchanged and contributions made to the poor. On the first evening, one candle is lighted in a special eight-branched candelabrum called a menorah or hanukkiyah. Beginning on the second night, one candle is added every night until the total reaches eight on the last night. The candles are lighted by a separate candle called a shamash.
The two books of Maccabees in the Apocrypha tell the story of Hanukkah. In 165 B.C., after a three-year struggle led by Judah Maccabee , the Jews in Judea defeated the Syrian tyrant Antiochus IV. They held festivities in the Temple in Jerusalem, and dedicated it to God.
According to the Talmud, written many centuries after the event, when the Jews cleaned the Temple of Syrian idols, they found only one small cruse of oil with which to light their holy lamps. But miraculously, the cruse provided them with oil for eight days. Other sources tell of a torchlight parade in the Temple, which may also have contributed to the tradition of lighting candles on Hanukkah.

by Gil Troy The Canadian Jewish News - 28 November 2002, B2-B3 Main: Why I Am A Zionist Homepage News Newspaper and Journal Articles ... WHY I AM A ZIONIST Jews are preparing to celebrate Hanukkah, our festival of lights, during a particularly dark period. The world seems to have gone mad. Islamic extremists declare war on the West, and many, especially in Europe and Canada, deny and dither, afraid to respond too assertively. Palestinians declare a war of terror on Israel, and too many, including Israelis and Jews, are quicker to blame Israel, the victim, than the Palestinian perpetrators. It is precisely during such bleak moments that we are compelled to celebrate. Rejoicing in past victories helps put our current troubles in perspective, reminding us that we have suffered before, and not just survived but thrived. Moreover, with terrorists trying to rob innocents of any joy, and any semblance of a normal life, observing holidays becomes yet another act of defiance, a leap of faith asserting our commitment to stick to the everyday. In the modern world, this festival of gelt-giving and of lights became the popular Jewish response to Christmas envy, the malady that seized many a Jewish household each December. In fact, with eight nights, and thus eight opportunities for gift-giving, Hanukkah became a way for Jews to trump their Christian neighbors.

Background on the Observance for the Teacher
No matter how you spell it, the roots of this holiday's name lie in the Hebrew word Hanokh , or "inaugurate." The story of Hanukkah, 8 days and nights of rejoicing and rededication, can be found in the Second Book of Maccabees, the last historical book of the Old Testament. For thousands of years, the Jewish people have struggled to retain their homeland and traditional way of life. In 332 B.C., Alexander the Great took control of Jerusalem, their capital city. Alexander wanted to unite all people into his Greek culture. This was known as hellenization . Then, 125 years later, a Syrian king named Antiochus III insisted even more strongly on the hellenization Judah and his men began cleaning and rebuilding the Temple. After a great deal of work, the Temple was refurbished. It was completed on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. They planned a special celebration to rededicate the Temple. But they only found one jar of the special lamp oil, which had been sealed and hidden away. It was just enough oil to burn the Temple menorah for only one day. However, miraculously the lamp remained burning for 8 days and 8 nights, giving Judah and his men the time they needed to find more oil. Hanukkah means "dedication." To celebrate the great miracle of light in 168 B.C., Jewish families since then have gathered around a special menorah which contains 9 candles. Every night of the holiday the menorah is lit. The helper or server candle (or

How to Teach Children the Meaning of Hanukkah
Hanukkah is the Jewish festival of lights. Although it has less religious significance than the Jewish High Holy Days, it is still a well-loved midwinter festival. Steps: Explain the history of the holiday to your children. In 165 B.C.E., the Jewish Maccabees managed to drive the Syrian army out of Jerusalem and reclaim their temple. The temple then had to be rededicated, since the Greek-influenced Syrians had taken it over as a temple to Zeus. Discuss the legend of the menorah. When the Jews prepared to rededicate their temple by relighting the "eternal flame," after driving out their oppressors, they had just enough consecrated oil to burn for one day, but the oil miraculously lasted for eight days until new oil arrived to fuel the flame. This is why Jewish families light candles or burn oil in a menorah for the eight days of Hanukkah, adding one candle each day. Discuss the timing of the holiday. Hanukkah is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev ' this usually, but not always, falls in December. Show your children a Jewish calendar, and explain to them why Hanukkah falls on a different day every year.

How to Prepare for Hanukkah
Preparing for Hanukkah is almost as exciting as the holiday itself. Serving holiday foods, playing dreidel and retelling the history of Hanukkah lifts spirits in the dark of winter and reminds Jews everywhere of their heritage. Steps: Prepare your hanukkiah (the menorah specific to Hanukkah) for the upcoming holiday by cleaning off any residual wax and polishing it. Purchase a hanukkiah from any Jewish gift store or online if you do not have one. Encourage your children to make their own hanukkiot (the plural of hanukkiah), to add their light to the family's. Purchase special Hanukkah candles for your hanukkiot. If you have an oil-burning one, buy the appropriate oil and wicks. Make sure you know the blessings to recite over the hanukkiah, and teach them to your children. Find the blessings by consulting Jewish Web sites, Jewish holiday books or your rabbi. Cook Hanukkah favorites such as latkes (potato pancakes) with applesauce and sour cream, and sufganiot (jelly doughnuts).

Temple Beth Am "Family of Families" Ha Kesher Meet Pam Gewurz
I teach 3rd Grade Judaic Studies and Hebrew at Temple Beth Am. We have had
a very exciting year so far. My students are beginning to read and write
Hebrew. They can put the letters together to sound out words and prayers. We
learned the Hanukkah blessings and will be starting the Four Questions for
    the Passover Seder this month.
In Judaic Studies, we have learned about Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot,
Simchat Torah, Hanukkah and Tu B'Shevat. We made beautiful Menorahs for
Hanukkah made out of wood and paper. I hope everyone enjoyed displaying them
during Hanukkah. We had a mini TuB'Shevat Seder where we tried foods that
are ripe in Israel at this time of year. We are studying Purim and Passover this month. The students will learn why we celebrate these holidays and the customs and traditions associated with each. A special project that I like to do for Passover is to make the 10 plagues. I hope that you will use them during your Seder so that your child can "act out" the story and the plagues as they are read from the Haggadah.
