I start making latkes potato pancakes a week before the first night of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. We decorate our house with white and blue streamers and take out the menorah a nine-branched candleholder on the first night. As soon as everyone is home each evening of the festival, we gather around our menorah. We sing the blessings and everyone gets a turn to light a candle. Like Jewish people around the world, on the first night we light one candle (and the Shamash, the helper candle) and every night we add another one. On the last night, we light eight candles. We play a spinning top game of dreidel, in which we win pennies or buttons.

is BellaOnline's Holiday/Seasonal Cooking Host Hanukkah Dreidel Brownie The Hanukkah Dreidel Brownie has a rich, smooth texture and is fun for the whole family to prepare together. Cocoa powder gives this oversized brownie its rich chocolatey taste and kids will gladly give up some gelt for this treat! Since cocoa powder also blends easily with other baking ingredients, there are no messy pre-melting steps, leaving more time for spinning dreidels and opening gifts
After the brownie has baked and cooled, kids will love to help create their own unique oversized dreidel using frosting and decorative candies.
This year, as the lights from the menorah flicker and you watch children play Hanukkah games, you can rest assured that the Hanukkah Dreidel Brownie is the perfect complement to your holiday festivities.

The Eight-Day Festival of Hanukkah When the Greeks ransacked the temple in Jerusalem (165 BC) and put up idols, the Jewish people rebelled. The Jews under Judah Maccabee gathered an army of farmers and shepherds. They fought back Antiochus the Greek leader. When the Jews regained the temple, they only found one small container of oil. There was only enough oil to light the menorah for one day. The oil miraculously lasted for eight days and nights. Lighting a menorah, playing with dreidels and eating potato pancakes and donuts are traditional ways to commemorate the miracle of Hanukkah. Every night, Jews light a candle on a nine-branched menorah. People light one candle on the first night and an additional candle each following night. Fried foods like potato pancakes (latkes) and doughnuts are special treats this time of year. Parents give presents or traditionally coins and nuts to children. Children play the dreidel game with Hebrew letters on a spinning top. ~Devorah Stone Hanukkah treats Traditional Latkes Yam Latkes Cinnamon Applesauce Fast Orange Doughnuts ... Hanukkah Doughnuts Presented by Becky Low on December 14, 1998
"Hanukkah celebrates the time in Jewish history when there was enough oil to light the temple lamp for 1 day, but miraculously the lamp stayed lit for 8 days. The miracle is remembered by lighting the Menorah for 8 days and the symbolic use of oil in the family meals. Other than latkes and doughnuts few foods are associated with Hanukkah. Following are 2 variations of Hanukkah doughnuts. " Variation 1: Jelly Filled Doughnuts Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup jam, or preserves
  • oil, for frying
  • powdered sugar Method: Scald milk by heating almost to a boil. Add butter and sugar. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast and stir to dissolve. Beat in eggs, salt, cinnamon, and 1 cup flour. Stir in enough more flour to make a soft dough. Knead dough on a slightly floured surface until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise until double in size. Knead out excess air. On a lightly floured surface roll dough to 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles 2 inches in diameter. Allow to rise slightly (about 15 minutes). Heat 2 inches of oil to 375 degrees. Place 1 teaspoon jam or preserves on each circle of dough and shape the dough around the jam, completely sealing jam inside. Carefully place doughnuts into hot oil, brown on both sides. Drain on a paper towel, then sprinkle with powder sugar. CAUTION: Jam inside doughnut will remain hot! Makes 24

    Gift Suggestions Wanted
My roommate and I are recent college grads, on our own for the first time. We're looking for creative, inexpensive gift ideas for Christmas/Hanukkah gifts for our friends and family. We have the time and energy to make gifts and would like to make the Holidays even more special with homemade presents. If anyone has any ideas, we would love to begin creating!

Bread Cloths How about some cross stitched bread cloths? There are many Christmas/Hanukkah designs out there just for this purpose. Not too hard to find especially in your local library. Another thing would be to simply purchase some pre-quilted material in designs of the season and edge them with a ruffle or some lace and give placemats with matching napkins.
JK Just Time and Imagination For years now I have made homeade gifts for my friends and relatives. I really didn't have a lot of $$ to put into them, just some time and careful planning. A few of the things I have done in the past are: Painted sweatshirts, crosstiched items like t-shirts, sweats, etc and also matted and framed in an inexpensive frame. I have for many years fixed tins w/ cookies, fudge, and other tasty treats in them for friends and family also. Baked breads with the colored plastic wrap, tied w/ ribbons is also an easy idea and it smells good too. Pictures of you framed make a nice present to grandparents since they don't have to go and buy a new frame for your new picture. There are several good ideas about making christmas gifts around. You just really to take the time and imagination to come up with some of them. I hope this helps some.
