Hantavirus Infection
What is hantavirus?
Hantavirus is the name of a family of related viruses that have virtually a worldwide distribution. Who gets hantavirus infection? Anyone can become infected with hantavirus, but persons who have exposure to rodents or to rodent-infested areas are at highest risk of the infection. Is hantavirus infection a new disease? No. Outbreaks of disease compatible with certain types of hantavirus infection have been described in Europe and Asia since the 1930's. However, in the United States, there were no reports of acute disease associated with hantavirus prior to 1993. In the spring of that year, an outbreak of severe respiratory disease caused by a newly recognized strain of hantavirus occurred in the southwestern USA. It is now apparent that illnesses due to this strain occurred before the 1993 outbreak but were not recognized. How is hantavirus infection acquired?

Disease Index NJ InTouch What You Should Know About. . . Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome What is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome? Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome is an illness caused by an infection with the Sin Nombre virus, one of several hantaviruses that have been identified in the Americas. The disease was first recognized in the spring and summer of 1993 in the Four Corners area of New Mexico and Arizona. Who gets Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome? Anyone can get Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. Most cases have occurred in the southwestern U.S., however sporadic cases have occurred in most other parts of the U.S. The frequency of the disease appears to coincide with the geographic distribution, population density, and proportion of carrier rodents that are infected. How is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome spread? Rodents (principally mice and rats) acquire a lifelong, asymptomatic, chronic infection with the virus. They excrete the virus in their saliva and urine. Humans acquire an infection through direct contact with infected rodents, rodent droppings, nests, or through inhalation of virus particles from rodent urine, droppings or saliva that have become airborne through wind currents, sweeping of floors, or similar actions. What are the symptoms of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome?

Hantavirus in the Americas:
Guidelines for Diagnosis, Treatment, Prevention, and Control
In 1993, the outbreak of a mysterious, deadly respiratory illness in the southwestern United States made national headlines. When a hantavirus was found to be the culprit, other governments in the Region began to focus greater attention on the presence and effects of hantavirus in their countries. This publication presents an extensive view of what came to be known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), its clinical manifestations, methods of preventing infection, and measures taken by governments in the Region to monitor hantaviruses and educate health professionals and the general public about the disease. This comprehensive manual begins by describing the different hantaviruses known in the Americas and their reservoirs, rodent ecology and zoology, and the epidemiology of human disease in the Region. Upon this foundation, the manual describes the disease's clinical manifestation and diagnosis and presents guidelines for HPS surveillance, treatment, and case management. It also provides detailed, easy-to-follow instructions for preventing infection in the home, hospital, and laboratory, as well for cleaning rodent-infested areas. The importance of educating health professionals and the general public about the disease is stressed through examples of communication strategies used in different countries of the Region. The publication also provides an overview of communication tools that can be adapted to educate diverse populations about HPS and other communicable diseases.

First Hantavirus Cases of 2004 Reported A Flathead County man died March 25, 2004, of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in what was the first reported case of the disease this year in Montana. A second case, involving a young woman from the Blackfeet Reservation in Glacier County, was reported in late April. The woman was hospitalized in Great Falls.
A total of 24 cases of hantavirus have been reported in Montana since the disease was first discovered here in 1993. The Flathead County case was the sixth fatality. There have been two previous deaths in Cascade County and one each in Glacier, Phillips, and Lewis and Clark counties. The average age of the victims was 36.
Officials are investigating how and where the two individuals contracted the disease. It occurs most commonly in the spring.
    Causes and Transmission
Hantavirus is contracted by inhaling airborne particles from dried droppings, urine and saliva of infected deer mice. The disease is not contagious from person to person, nor is it known to infect dogs and cats. Most cases in the United States have been associated with:

How to Protect Yourself from Hantavirus
Hantavirus infection is a serious, life-threatening illness caused by inhaling the virus. The virus is carried in the airborne particles of rodent urine, droppings or saliva. The primary carrier of Hantavirus is the deer mouse. It is 10 to 22 cm. in length from head to tail, ranges in color from pale gray to reddish brown, and has white fur on its belly, feet and underside of the tail. However, all rodents including squirrels, rats, chipmunks and other kinds of mice should be treated as if they might carry the virus.
    Who is at risk?
    • People living in or visiting houses, cottages or camps where rodents are living or have been. Campers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts visiting areas with rodents. Individuals who clean barns, sheds/outbuildings or other grain storage areas where rodents are likely to live.
