Hang Gliding In The Northwest
Steven took this picture of me in my Blade
Which is FOR SALE!

I took this one of Steven in his Sensor The overall theme here is hang gliding in the northwest; from Oregon to BC, mainly Washington. The numbers on some of the paragraphs correspond to the numbers on the map at the bottom of this page. Each picture here is a thumbnail. Many thanks to my friend, Dave, who provided the space for the full size pictures on his web server at Indyweb! If you need a web host, this is the link For non-pilots here are some frequently-asked questions about hang gliding. If you'd like to become a pilot, try Flat Mountain , or Aerial Adventures

in his Sensor TOO BAD we LOST our LZ!!!
Darren in his new Stealth
Willy with a BUTT in his mouth! These aren't photographs that would make the cover of a printed publication but they give an idea of what flying in the northwest is like. If you're from somewhere besides the northwest US, you probably wouldn't want to come here. It rains all the time. (Except for when it's snowing like it's doing while I write this). The grid-lock is terrible and you can't find a place to camp. No hotel vacancies. Very uncomfortable. Trying to decide which site to head for? Maybe this

The development of the modern hang glider, and the birth of the sport of hang gliding and paragliding.
It all began when.....
It's hard to pinpoint exactly when the dream of Icarus became a reality, but there were certainly several notable milestones during the development of an unpowered personal flying machine.
During the latter part of the 19th century a German engineer made over 2,000 successful flight on weight shift hang gliders. His name was Otto Lilienthal, and the hang gliders used were similar in design to the one illustrated here. The notes he kept of those experimental flights were a major source of inspiration for early aviation pioneers.
Unfortunately, once the Wright brothers achieved powered flight, Otto and hang gliding were largely forgotten.
Forgotten that is until the late 1940's, when Dr Francis Rogallo (a NASA scientist) and his wife became interested in the subject. Initially they worked in their spare time developing a flexible wing kite, which they patented in 1948.
In the late 1950's NASA joined the "space race", and conducted a number of tests to see if the Rogallo wing could be used as a steerable recovery parachute for their space capsules.

Kitty Hawk Kites Kitty Hawk Kites, Inc. was founded in 1974 by John Harris, a pioneer in hang gliding, to provide instruction, products, and service to the burgeoning new sport. In the late 1980s, Kitty Hawk Kites expanded into what is now it's three main businesses; providing hang gliding instruction to students and instructors through it's Flight School; selling aviation and outdoor clothing as well as kites and toys through it's retail outlets; and providing adventure recreation activities. The Flight School The KHK Flight School with upwards of 35 instructors during the summer months is the oldest hang gliding school on the east coast of the USA and the largest school of its kind in the world. It provides beginning, intermediate, and advanced instruction to students as well as instructors in foot-launched and tandem hang gliding. Since its inception, the Flight School has provided instruction to well over 200,000 students and continues to instruct over 10,000 students every year. The Flight School provides rating certifications to students meeting United States Hang Gliding Association (USHGA) published standards.
