Handwriting Club:
Using Sensory Integration Strategies to Improve Handwriting
MELISSA KELLER

Handwriting is a complex skill that is not often taught directly. It is not unusual for some students with disabilities to have difficulty with handwriting. These students may also have sensory integration problems. Handwriting Club is a format that provides direct instruction in handwriting combined with sensory integration activities. This article describes all the steps and materials necessary to organize and conduct a handwriting club. Hand writing was a subject that I didn't believe I had time to teach. As a teacher of students with behavior disorders and learning disabilities, I felt more responsible for teaching the basic skills. I did not have time to "do" handwriting. Then last year another teacher in my building told me about the Handwriting Club she had conducted at a school where she previously taught. The club met for a few weeks with the teacher and the occupational therapist (OT) and incorporated sensory activities with handwriting instruction. I was interested because I had begun working on some sensory integration activities using the How Does Your Engine Run?

HANDWRITING BASICS
Analyzing first graders' spelling tests won't tell you about their personalities, but examining their handwriting may provide clues to developmental problems that could interfere with learning. Handwriting is an academic skill that allows youngsters to express their thoughts and feelings and communicate their knowledge to others. Classroom teachers depend on written work to measure what children are learning and how well. Handwriting efficiency requires mastery of multiple skills, including vision, memory, posture, and body control, as well as the task of holding a pencil and forming letters. Children who fall behind classmates because they lack some of these skills may miss learning opportunities and lack self-esteem. WHAT CAN FAMILIES DO? Handwriting is a complex process of handling language by coordinating the eyes, arms, hands, pencil grip, letter formation, and body posture. Sports, games, and everyday activities at home can help children improve many of the functions that make up handwriting skills.

Several grips are suitable for writing. Three efficient grips are shown below. Allow students to experiment and choose the one that feels best.
This is the adapted tripod grip.
This is the quadrupod grip.
This is the more traditional tripod grip.
First Writing Tools
To begin actual writing, first use crayons, then introduce markers, and eventually, use pencils for writing activities. Even after letting students write with pencils, allow them to take tests with crayons or markers. Any time you begin a new writing skill, initially teach the skill with crayons.
Young children have difficulty seeing the light blue lines found on commercial notebook paper. Purchase tactile paper with dark, raised lines. See resources that are listed under Store (homepage). You may also want to fold paper along a line to give a tactile as well as a visual reference for writing.
Ready to Write
Kindergarten or first grade teachers use finger plays, songs, and games to help students get ready for fine motor activities. If you teach an older student who is not yet developmentally ready for fine motor skills, ask the student to use a hole punch to strengthen and develop hand muscles.
Quills, the original writing pens, established the hand grip used today. We actually should place the pencil between the first two fingers with the thumb underneath. Avoid large, fat pencils, even for young children.

Handwriting Without Tears
Jan Olsen
This program is outstanding whether you have a beginner just learning to form letters or an older student who needs a little corrective help with their penmanship! It is clearly written and simple to implement. Thorough, comprehensive lessons and activities lead students from readiness skills through successful cursive writing. The Handwriting Without Tears Teacher's Guide is the backbone of the program. It provides all the information and teaching strategies a parent needs to be able to teach penmanship successfully to both right- and left-handed students. The teaching tips and information are organized chronologically in the order you would want to present them to your child; and instructions are accompanied by detailed illustrations. In each step of the method the teacher demonstrates and then the student imitates. It couldn't be easier and this one book is a complete explanation and demonstration of the methods as well as an overview of each workbook in the series. This unique system is especially great for the 4-, 5-, or 6-year-old "still have the wiggles" students, too! Lessons are only 10-15 minutes in length and there is plenty of motion, interactive hands-on activity and fun as they go through readiness exercises, learn the techniques for holding a pencil, positioning paper, using good posture, forming capital letters and writing numbers. (We found it extremely easy to incorporate phonics review into this portion of handwriting practice, too. What a great opportunity!)

ere are my general tips regarding teaching handwriting: P lan to do handwriting on a daily basis until your child can remember how to form the letters and do it reasonably well. Make certain that your child follows the arrows (or writes in the correct direction) when forming letters. Be certain that you supervise your child because it is very difficult to un-teach something that your child has taught himself to do the wrong way. Some children can't decide which hand to write with. Please do not fret over that, let him decide which hand he will write with that day. Some-day he will settle on his preferred hand. After your child can remember how to form the letters and do it reasonably well, you should have handwriting classes as needed and you will decide that based on how well your child is doing. You will know that your child is doing well....

    Introduce Handwriting, Now or Later?
by Nan J. Barchowsky When do I begin to teach my son/daughter to write?" This question comes up often. You know your child as no one else does, so with some help from this article you can answer the question. Wait. Do not be anxious. Wait until the child understands the meaning of writing, why the marks we make on paper mean something to ourselves or someone else. A child may be five before he or she comprehends that an assemblage of letters creates a message. Even with a seemingly late start the child will learn to write with no set back to academic progress. In some countries children are not expected to read and write until age seven. It is the long run, the end result, to which we teach. Unless a child is ready, no jumpstart in any instruction, handwriting included, will matter in later grades. Writing letters and words at too early a stage in development can have negative effects. Wait until your child can hold a marker comfortably before teaching letter formation. The tripod hold is considered ideal; the forefinger controls the movement. Call the forefinger the "writing finger." Some small hands may be ready to write but need the third finger on the shaft of the writing tool for support. Tolerate that position for awhile, but gently encourage your child to drop the third finger down underneath the shaft. The writing finger is on top, with the writing tool resting on the thumb and third finger.
