By the time she was eight, her penmanship was arguably the worst in North Texas. Sure, her handwriting bordered on illegible, but who cared?
http://www.kaleidoscapes.com/cerelle/hs_essay5.html
True Adventures in Homeschooling Piggy Penmanship Much Ado About Nothing Guilt assaults the homeschooling mother at odd times, over the oddest things. Take handwriting, for instance. My children all started out with great handwriting. It was great because they were four years old, for crying out loud, and any writing is great when you're four. I remember waiting with my first child at a lumber yard one day. She was killing time by writing down all the words she knew how to spell. Mama. Papa. Ariel. Love. You. Cat. Dog. Girl. Ball. Granny. Not bad for a preschooler. The store accountant walked through, looked at what she was doing, and asked her how old she was. His eyes widened when she told him. "Shucks, you have better handwriting than I do," he said to her, "and I'm 52!" I recall feeling inordinately proud that day, but I should have remembered that pride goeth before a fall. By the time she was eight, her penmanship was arguably the worst in North Texas. To tell the truth, I hadn’t particularly noticed. At the time, I was too impressed with the originality of her artwork, the arcane facts she possessed, the brilliance of her analytical skills. Sure, her handwriting bordered on illegible, but who cared? Well, my mother cared, as it turned out. Elementary teachers can’t

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 26, 2000) – Physicians are notorious for bad handwriting. Reading some doctors’ prescription orders has been likened to deciphering hieroglyphics or interpreting the Rosetta Stone. But though society once made light of their indiscernible scratches and scrawls, doctors’ bad handwriting is no longer a laughing matter. According to Paul B. Hackmeyer, MD, Chief of the Medical Staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, poor handwriting can be dangerous if not deadly.

Write 555 Poor handwriting is a major
barrier for life.
Many children try very hard
to make the characters
to their parents' satisfaction.
It's usually not enough.
Some students take several hours
to write their homework.
Why?
REASONS FOR POOR HANDWRITING A negative response to constructive criticism in toddler and preschool years. "Color between the lines" and other disparaging remarks limit necessary practices. Children also have poor handwriting because of: Limited practice Competing activities Television and computer games. Lack of handwriting success causes writing avoidance. Competing verbal time limits practice. OUR RESULTS: All our students make major improvements in their handwriting skills. How? Handwriting is taught in high speed practices. COMMON PROBLEM WRITING AVOIDANCE Early attempts to write are a painful experience. Children have unpleasant reactions to constructive criticism.

WRITE ON!
Celebrate National Handwriting Day CELEBRATING THE WRITTEN WORD MT. LAUREL, NJ - January 23, 2004 marks, what would have been, John Hancock's 267th birthday. The Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association (WIMA) honors the founding father by celebrating National Handwriting Day. The purpose of National Handwriting Day is to alert the public to the importance of handwriting, stress the benefits of handwritten communication, promote good penmanship and encourage legible handwriting. National Handwriting Day is a chance for everyone to re-explore the purity and power of handwriting. Though it gets lost in the emergence of digital technology, handwriting still remains a constant in personal communication. With each phone message jotted down, each note secretly passed in class and each memo quickly written in a meeting, the printed word has become part of our subconscious. On January 23rd, WIMA wants to bring that idea to the forefront. "Whether it is a focus on better penmanship or discovering the permanence and character of handwriting, this is the time to celebrate handwritten communication," said Robert B. Waller, Jr., executive vice president for WIMA. The Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association is a national trade association covering the $4.5 billion industry of pen, pencil and marker manufacturers.

- The fading art of penmanship has been rediscovered at Immaculate Conception Academy. Three students in the K-12 Catholic school, which has an enrollment of 107, are state champions in the nation's largest handwriting contest.
Three students from Immaculate Conception Academy in Norwood have won the State Grade Level of the National Handwriting Contest. They are, from left, Emily Cole, 13, seventh grade, Michelle Boylson, 7, second grade, and John Boylson, 14, eighth grade. Michelle and John are cousins.

"They write well or they write it over again," said Sister Mary Peter, an Immaculate Conception teacher who knows from 37 years of experience that students who write legibly perform better. Richard Northup, vice president of marketing for Zaner-Bloser Educational Publishers in Columbus, the contest sponsor, said handwriting is a key element of literacy, and studies show that students who do it well score better on proficiency tests. "We want kids to know that good things happen when you have good handwriting," Northup said.

Ornamental Penmanship by John DeCollibus home products download catalog custom invitations ... original pieces about ordering contact us links D uring America's Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship (approximately 1850-1925), handwriting skills were valued as highly as education, business and commerce, or computer skills are today. Many men and women achieved fame for demonstrating high levels of expertise in decorative handwriting, while the most talented of these individuals became legendary as "master penman" of the era. T here were many different styles of ornamental penmanship. Among the most well-known of these was Spencerian Script, named for Platt Rogers Spencer (1800-1864), who is referred to as "the man who taught America how to write". His semi-angular style of cursive writing became the reference for American handwriting in the 19th Century. However, in the public excitement expressed towards decorative handwriting during the late 1800's, the style of ornamental penmanship that brought forth the most visual excitement was unique in the fact that it contained no letters at all. K nown as off-hand flourishing, this form of writing is essentially non-lettering penmanship. Instead of communicating thoughts and words, off-hand flourishing conveys images of grace and beauty through the use of artistic shades, hairline strokes, and gentle curves.

Jumping on the bandwagon, I would like to add my own glowing praise. Last October, at the library history panel held by the Ticknor Society and Harvard's History of the Book Seminar, he gave a fascinating presentation and raised good questions about the history of reading and libraries. I am still thinking about some of the ideas and questions that he raised . . . When I have time, I will definitely read some of the Hermenaut articles by Battles that Jessamyn points to in her post. At a Glance Ginny Flower, 28 The Practice: Graphologists analyze handwriting for patterns that signal certain health problems and personality traits (large loops, for example, indicate respiratory problems). They then recommend specific penmanship changes, which they say can heal the problem or alter the trait. The Cost: $75 to $200 an hour. My Motivation: Pure curiosity. Fear Factor: None. I'VE NEVER HAD PRETTY HANDWRITING. So when I was asked if I'd like to have mine analyzed for clues about my health, my curiosity was piqued. Following instructions, I dug out notes, letters, and phone messages from the past year and mailed four samples to medical graphologist Rose Toomey in Oceanside, Calif.

A good portion of the writing samples included in Mr. Bickhams book were not, in fact, considered calligraphy in their time, but rather to exemplify legible and easy styles of business hand, intended, as per the books subtitle, for clerks and others whose jobs necessitated a good deal of writing and record-keeping, prior to the era of the typewriter. To the reviewer who complained of the cursive scripts being illegible, try reading handwritten cursive a bit more often; the scripts do retain certain archaisms such as the extended S, but are not significantly different from, for instance, the Spencerian system of cursive penmanship, which dominated American schools throughout the 19th century. If you want illegible (to the modern readers eye) calligraphy, try picking your way through an illuminated medieval manuscript.

In the long run, penmanship classes for doctors won't do much for patient safety
From the January 10, 2001 issue Handwriting has always been, and will remain, a problem in medicine. A 1979 study showed that it was difficult to interpret about half of all physicians' handwritten orders. Little has changed since then. In fact, a more recent study demonstrated that problems with legibility are inherent in average human writing and that physician penmanship was no worse than that of non-physicians. Much more evidence is needed to be sure that penmanship classes truly have a sustained effect on medical safety, given the variability of real-life situations and busy work schedules, and the effects of fatigue, disruptions, and preoccupation. Moreover, a course in penmanship should not give the public or health systems, including the hospital governing body, managers, and medical staff, a false sense of security. It must not forestall establishing strategic plans and realistic timelines to implement computerized methods for prescribing that have been proven to reduce errors and address most of the problems mentioned above, including illegible handwriting.
