    Christina Hoff Sommers
By Christina Hoff Sommers There are exceptions, but here is the rule: Boys are graphologically challenged. That males have many more problems with penmanship than females is "not even a question," according to University of Maryland special education professor and distinguished scholar Steve Graham. "It is one of the better established facts in the literature." Handwriting is a basic skill that serves us all our lives. Unfortunately, a problem that primarily affects boys is rarely on anyone's list of educational priorities. This one could be solved readily enough, if schools would take the pains they once took to inculcate good handwriting. Two powerful groups have opposed the teaching of penmanship-the techno-enthusiasts and the progressive educators. The former regard handwriting as a quaint relic of the past; the latter believe handwriting instruction inhibits a child's creativity and spontaneity. The techno-optimists have been around a long time. Since the invention of the typewriter in the 1870s, experts have predicted the imminent demise of handwriting. With each new innovation-the telephone, the Dictaphone, the tape recorder-technology enthusiasts have declared the end of penmanship. "Hand-writing nowadays is as out-of-date as the hand-lettered book," according to a 1956 article in

Instead, students produce increasingly illegible handwriting or the uniform type fonts of computer word processing programs, said science teacher Helen Wood, who teaches at Moody Middle School in Henrico County, Va., and runs a side business as a calligrapher. Pen Deadly as Sword? In the real world, bad penmanship can be dangerous. Medication errors due to factors such as illegible handwriting account for 7,000 deaths annually, according to a new report by the Institute of Medicine. In one case, a Texas jury awarded a woman $450,000 because her husband died from taking the wrong medicine. A portion of the 98 million letters and 1.2 million packages sent annually to the U.S. Postal Service's "dead-letter office" end up there because of indecipherable handwriting. It takes 212 employees to sort through this mail, which costs up to 10 times more to process. Bad handwriting caused the collapse of a court case in Britain recently. A policeman's handwritten report about an alleged trespasser was so illegible that the court threw out the case. Continuing the case, the court said, would be a "breach of human rights."

    - Tonight's discussion is on the topic of teaching handwriting/penmanship in the age of the computer. We have with us a representative of Idea Maker, Inc., creators of StartWrite software. Welcome to all and to our guest, Mr. Bill Barlow. Bill, what is your position at Idea Maker, Inc. and do you have legible handwriting? :-)
Bill - I am VP of sales and marketing and yes I do have legible handwriting, although, like many, it could use improvement.
Kathleen - Participants: How important is good handwriting instruction in this age of word processors?
Kathleen - A few years ago we were being told that spelling and handwriting would be obsolete with increased availability of computers. Has that happened? EMA - I cannot read some of my 6th graders writings... Kathleen - Everyone, jump in with your opinions and experiences. Kathleen - EMA, do you remediate handwriting? - It's still very important. Not everything is done on a puter, and your messages has to be understood - I have such a hard time reading some people's handwriting!

Teacher Carol Buese is demonstrating how to form a lower-case "y" in D'Nealian, a hybrid of traditional printing and cursive handwriting. "It almost looks like a fish hook under the water," she explains as she slants the letter down to the left and curls it. She instructs them to write five upper-case "Y"s and five lower-case "y"s, then the sentence "Was yesterday rainy?" "Where do your feet go when we do D'Nealian?" Buese asks the youngsters. "Flat on the floor, that's right." Times may have changed, but good posture is still important.

Mrs. Bodden's phone call was on our help line. Her voice was filled with pride as she described her seven-year old son's accomplishments in the short time since the reading system had arrived - that was until she described Jason's handwriting. "His penmanship is terrible. We can barely read it!" Now her voice expressed deep concern. "They told us that he has impaired fine motor development, and cognitive processing problems."
My voice tried to express understanding. "You had him tested?"
"Yes. That was before we got your books. We agreed to let the school test him even after we decided to home school Jason. We wanted to make sure that everything was all right, that maybe we should do things differently. We didn't really expect that anything was wrong: in spite of what the school had told us. He always seemed like such a bright little boy. But now I can't help wondering..."
Jason is indeed a bright youngster. At age seven he is writing little stories on the computer, and illustrating the computer printouts with amusing, but not so great line drawings. He has shared "his books" with neighborhood pals who thoroughly enjoyed his creations. So what is Jason's problem?

    Perfect Penmanship
When it comes to scribing her P's and Q's, Rachel Baric Tarnow is the best in the state
Wednesday, May 19, 2004 By Grace Rishell, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Once people wrote letters in longhand with fine penmanship. Handwriting was an art. Students were taught it as part of the curriculum and were praised for their nicely rounded O's and the flourish of their impressive W's. A person's penmanship was as distinctive as his personality. Today, rather than the quiet of a pen skimming along a page, we are likely to hear the click-click of a computer keyboard. Quick? Yes. Personalized? It's not quite the same. Rachel Baric-Tarnow, a fifth-grader at St. Philip School in Crafton, is comfortable with both versions of communication. "I like to type a lot, but I do like to write, also," she said. Rachel recently was named Pennsylvania's 2004 State Handwriting Champion in a national contest sponsored by Zaner-Bloser Educational Publishers, of Columbus, Ohio, a firm that develops penmanship programs for pupils in kindergarten through eighth grade. St. Philip School uses the firm's products and incorporates handwriting into classroom studies. Rachel, the daughter of Gregory Tarnow and Carol Baric-Tarnow, of Crafton, competed against fifth-graders throughout the state to gain her title of champion. She will receive her surprise award later this year.
