This handwriting-teacher's book/CD-ROM "Fluent Handwriting" was released July 1997, and is available from Amazon.com's online bookstore or from her site at http://www.BFHhandwriting.com - the method described in "Fluent Handwriting" was developed over a period of more than 20 years of experience in elementary school classrooms. The opportunity to observe the motor skills of young children enabled her to formulate methods that allow children to acquire the ability to write at the maximum speed with maximum legibility. If children learn to write with the most efficient movement possible for the human hand, little classroom time need be devoted to penmanship in years when so many other activities demand attention. Handwriting can be individual, and a joy! Dr. June E. Baskin, Ph.D.

22. Italics
You’ll find Italics, Beautiful handwriting for Children very helpful in teaching italic penmanship within a Charlotte Mason framework.
http://www.digis.net/~gardnerp/italics.html
I have several hang-ups about the cursive traditionally taught in public schoolsyou know, the kind no one can read. For one thing, I was always embarrassed of my own handwriting. It was fairly legible but it wasn’t the pretty, flowery, feminine way that most girls wrote. It was very plain and ugly. In my work/study college days, I was typist for the campus newspaper. I spent most of my time trying to decipher the scrawl made by the journalist students. After that frustrating job, I switched to printing so I wouldn’t be inflicting frustration on others. We live in a world of “Please Print” because few people have legible handwriting. But the italic handwriting method changes all that. It is a beautiful and legible hand. The transition between printed italic, called basic italic, and cursive italic is very easy. It is the only method that does not have drastic changes between the two. You’ll find Italics, Beautiful Handwriting for Children

Not long ago, a dedicated home educator asked me for any suggestions that I might have for a grandson who was experiencing writing difficulties. Here are the strategies that I suggested. Perhaps they may be of help to someone else. First, check to see how your student is holding his pencil. If he is holding it incorrectly, he may be straining physically to manipulate the pencil and write. I have worked with children who have done this and a great deal of their manipulation is in the wrist, not giving them much control. The pencil should be controlled by the fingertips. Look to see if the thumb is actually on the pencil or is wrapped . The tip of the thumb should be near the bottom of the pencil so that it can contribute control of the pencil, not wrapped across the pencil. The index finger and thumb should be on the top of the pencil with the weight of the pencil actually resting on the second finger which is underneath the pencil. I know this sounds crazy, but I have seen DRAMATIC changes in writing when the position of the pencil was changed. Also try letting the pupil write on a piece of paper that is taped to the wall. Sometimes this will foster a "lighter" touch instead of writing that is obviously produced by "bearing down" hard, pencil to paper on a table or desk.

The Search Researching my subject, Nineteenth Century Penmanship, proved to be very interesting. My search was primarily on the internet, in the local library, and in the libraries of two colleges. I quickly discovered that my tendency to browse and go off on tangents, in my reading, was a serious problem. I found myself reading about the forensic uses of handwriting, handwriting analysis, and calligraphy. These were all very interesting, however, they were not helpful in my chosen subject. One of my first lessons was to stay focused on the subject. I started my search on the internet and found four articles that were informative and relevant to my subject. My search on the internet revealed an article reprinted from Country Living magazine which gave a history of the rise and fall of beautiful handwriting. Three other articles, A Social History of Penmanship Period Penmanship , and A Brief History of Writing Instruments In the Newport News Public Library, I found the

America's Golden Age of Penmanship (1850-1925) produced the most graceful forms of handwriting ever developed by Western civilization.
Sull's Handwriting System will soon be available for learning these beautiful penmanship styles through a host of educational materials and products, including a thorough course of study for children in grades One and higher. The curriculum is especially designed to be flexible; while sections of the course are recommended for specific grade levels, older students and adults can enter the program at levels that are applicable for their own abilities. The course begins with comprensive instruction in Amercan Cursive Handwriting and progresses into Spencerian Script Penmanship
In addition, students can learn
the rich heritage of this unique period in American history by studying the legacies of the penmen who were instrumental in creating these vintage handwriting styles.

andwriting helps children learn attention to detail, polishes fine motor skills, and most importantly, can be a gateway to good reading skills. Unfortunately penmanship - or handwriting as it's often called - is becoming a lost art, squeezed out of daily classroom schedules by the blocs of new material being forced in. "Handwriting skills complement other language arts skills," says Jan Olsen, founder of Handwriting Without Tears , a Maryland-based program for teaching penmanship.

I frequently score essays for a company that processes the state assessment tests that are becoming so common all across the United States. I have scored essays from nearly every grade level, from third grade right up to and including high school. One thing that I have noticed is that at all levels, most students have deplorable penmanship. It is often a struggle to make out one word out of five in any given essay. Some essays are so entirely indecipherable that they must be flagged as unscoreable.
This problem is not confined to the K-12 level. As a college instructor I have also noticed a drastic decline in the legibility of my own students' handwriting. I am famous for my ability to make sense out of nearly indecipherable script, but even I am about ready to throw in the towel. More and more often I cannot begin to guess what my students' scribbles are intended to represent.
A little over a year ago a student said that I was the only one of her college instructors who would accept handwritten essays, and she thanked me profusely for that policy. Like many students, she could not afford her own computer, and she often had to go to the computer center alone late at night to type out a paper for another class. Since she also could not afford a car, every late-night trip to the relatively isolated and poorly lit location of the computer center was a terrifying adventure. Campus security is not great at KU, and many womenand even one young manhave been raped on this campus over the years.

Mike Wendland: Bad handwriting trend blamed on computer use
March 15, 2001 I've never been good at penmanship. But since I started using computers, my handwriting has become so bad that even I can't make it out. I can type, using the two-fingered self-taught hunt-and-peck method, at a pretty amazing speed. I can tap out letters and numbers on my Palm handheld accurately enough to dazzle onlookers. But I often can't read my own handwriting. You, too? In my case, I'm convinced the computer is the culprit. What was never very legible in the first place has become worse during the past several years as I've become digitally dependent. "Every year, 10 million letters end up undeliverable, in the dead letter boxes at post offices," says Bill Bostick, a Bingham Farms handwriting expert. "The reason is that nobody can read the penmanship on the envelopes. Have you wondered why every form you're asked to fill out says to print the information? It's because our handwriting is so abominable." All this greatly saddens the 88-year-old Bostick. He is so skilled at writing beautifully hand-crafted flowing letters in a classic Italian Renaissance style called Chancery that he has taught penmanship and calligraphy for nearly four decades.

Mott Media Presents:
Spencerian Penmanship
In the mid-1800's, the Spencerian form of penmanship became a standard. An elegant handwriting was much prized. Today, in our computer age, a fine, beautiful, and legible handwriting brings a warm personal touch to our correspondence. These books, 5 copybooks and a theory book (available separately or as a set), may be used to introduce cursive writing to second or third graders or to improve the handwriting of older students or adults. Theory of Spencerian Penmanship By Platt R. Spencer. This book explains how all the letters can be made gracefully and rapidly using various combinations of a few basic pen strokes. It explains Spencer's philosophy of teaching principles which engage the mind as well as the hand. It also details his methods for teaching classes of children. One of these is having the children write rhythmically, in concert, as the teacher counts. The power of this method is being rediscovered today. Up Hand Washing by Health Care Providers [ Bad Penmanship can lead to Medical Errors ] For Doctors’ Scrawl, Handwriting’s on the Wall Healthcare providers’ compliance behavior is revealed by this headline from another newspaper article, by Rene Sanchez ( Washington Post , May 16, 2000). Folklore has it that physicians’ handwriting is notoriously bad, and with the increased importance of prescription medicines in treating diseases of every sort, poor penmanship increases the probability of fatal medication errors. Even more than handwashing, prescription errors show how adverse medical outcomes can reflect not just the misbehavior of an individual, but rather the complexity of the entire healthcare system. An analysis by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) shows how complex the system actually is. First, the physician has to write or otherwise order the prescription. Then, the prescription must be routed to the pharmacist, who reviews the order and then dispenses the prescription. Finally, the prescription has to be administered, by either the patient or a caregiver.

Book 6, Handwriting Exercise ISBN 0-9688493-7-7 A most interesting way to learn legible adult style handwriting at a young age. The practice page begins with an alphabet of 3/16" size capital letters (which is 3/4's of a line) which the student handwrites onto a business card-style box. The student continues with a Bible verse in the following boxes. Completing a box looks quite attainable in one sitting taking less than 10 minutes. One is encouraged to decorate each box with a border pattern as it also promotes muscle control and perseverence while developing aestetics and good taste. The student should be encouraged to continue to maintain and develop the penmanship skills by using Book 7 and Book 8. The discipline of tidy handwriting is better kept up with a little regular handwriting practice.

Reading Handwriting of the Past
by Bob Brooke Old records were written by hand. Often this "handwriting" or "penmanship," as it was called not too long ago, is indecipherable. Handwriting, as with language, changes over time, so what may have been common practice years ago is no longer used. Not only have our words and their meanings changed throughout the years, the way we form the letters has, too. Old_time script can make a genealogist's head spin. However, chances are that an old document may contain valuable information, so it's worth taking extra time to read it carefully. In order to get the most information from the records that are available, a genealogist has to decipher them and put meaning into the symbols on the old documents. As a genealogist searches old Bible, census, courthouse, archive and Church records to obtain names, places and dates, often the words are unclear. Also, the older the document, the harder it is to read. So where should a researcher begin? Use the known to take you to the unknown. Study the way in which letters were made, especially in obvious words. Legal documents are loaded with terms like "whereas," "wherefore,' and "hence." An ancestor s name is another good place to begin. Make a note of the letters in those words, and try to find them in others. An important note to remember is that much of the writing is "phonetic." Clerks often wrote a name the best that they could by how it sounded.
