Eva's Home Page Eva's Cavy Page Eva's Rat Page Eva's Natal Rat Page Differing views on pet care:
I think it is very interesting that people have so many different views on the topic of pet care. I have been thinking about this a lot. Some people I know use the smallest cages they possibly can and they give their animals the cheapest and easiest-to-feed kind of food to the animals, in order to be able to keep as many animals as possible for breeding purposes. Some of these people, when asked, of course have totally other views on pet care than the person with just a few highly beloved pets. This is exactly as with dog owners. Some dog owners think it is totally ok to leave the dog alone all day, and take it out on a 5 minute pee walk once in a while. Other dog owners would feel that it is totally unthinkable to leave such a highly social animal as a dog alone all day, and would also take the dog out for long walks every day. Some dog owner's fool themselves by getting two dogs and think that two dogs may be happier together in the absence of their owner. But two lonely dogs are just two lonely dogs, waiting for their owner. It is better to pay somebody to walk the dog during the day, or even pay somebody (a human companion) to

The following are some basic care tips on these animals. Before you decide on a pet, do some more reading and research. Possibly talk to someone who has the type of pet you are considering. For further advice, or in the case of a suspected medical problem, consult a veterinarian.
Small Mammals - Gerbils, Hamsters, Mice, Rats, Degus
Selecting
With their diverse and interesting personalities, small mammals easily capture your heart. And they fit into lifestyles where other pets would be unsuitable, such as in apartments and with novice pet owners or families that are away from home doing the day.
A wide variety of small mammals awaits you, so to pick the one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, you must learn about the needs and personalities of the different species. Do your homework before you get the pet by visiting your library or bookstore, calling a humane society or accessing one of the many computer bulletin boards [web site discussion groups] where pet owners exchange problems and experiences.
Nutrition
Food and water need to be available at all times. Many of these small creatures like to hide their food, so make sure they do not run out. Laboratory pellets as the main food source, supplemented with a good quality grain mixture a couple of times of week is the best basic diet. You can also compliment the diet with small amounts of clean, organic dark greens and fresh fruits. Be sure to remove any uneaten fresh food withing 30 minutes as it will spoil. You should also offer fresh Timothy or Alfalfa DO NOT feed your small rodent: salt, sugar, chocolate, or foods with high fat content. Healthy treats may include: plain popcorn, low sugar cereals, or bird seed. Water bottles should be used instead of dishes as they stay cleaner longer. Be sure to clean the water bottle at least once a day, using a mild soap.

Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs are popular pets for many reasons. They are docile and friendly, and once tamed, they seem to enjoy interaction with their owners. They make ideal first pets for older children, because they are easy to care for and rarely bite. A guinea pig does not require a lot of space, so it is an ideal pet for a child's bedroom or for a person living in an apartment. The guinea pig's life span of 3-5 years is longer than that of smaller rodents such as hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice. Another name for the guinea pig is "cavy" from its scientific name, Cavia porcellus. Guinea pigs are rodents from South America, which were initially tamed by the Incas of Peru. The most common varieties of guinea pigs found in pet stores today are the English shorthaired, the Peruvian longhaired, and the Abyssinian rough-haired. Newer strains of longhaired cavies include the smooth-coated Silkies and the rough-haired Woolies. Many guinea pigs kept as pets are actually "mixed breeds." The various types of guinea pigs can be found in numerous colors and color combinations. The guinea pig's long gestation period (length of pregnancy) of 59-72 days is similar to that of dogs and cats rather than the other members of the rodent family (e.g., rats, mice, hamsters, and gerbils) that typically have a 21-to-28 day gestation period. This longer period results in well-developed (precocial) offspring that have open eyes and full hair coats when born and eat solid food within several days. The average litter size is 2 to 4. The female guinea pig should be bred before the age of 6 months. After that time, pelvic structures fuse, and giving birth will be difficult if not impossible.

Hamsters have always had a special place in my heart. When my kids suddenly went with the Hamtaro craze (a Japanese children's hamster show), I thought that perhaps I'd better start up a section on these interesting little pocket pets that have captured the hearts of many. We will first run through some general information about hamsters and then go through the nitty gritty of hamster care.

PETS ARE FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS Before purchasing a pet you should really be sure that you know everything you need to know about it's care and understand the commitment and responsibility you are taking on, not forgetting the financial implications. One of the most rewarding things about having a pet is giving it liberty and freedom whenever you can, especially if it is confined for a great part of its life in a caged environment, and knowing it is happy as a result of this. Obviously, the larger a home the better. I discovered this by accident when I let my Russian Hamsters have the run of the conservatory knowing that it was escape proof and free from danger (electric wires, etc.). In the mornings I would check their cages to ensure they were all safe and, 99% of the time, they were all asleep in their nest boxes, happy to be back 'home', which proved to me that if an animal is happy in its environment it will not continually try to escape it.

Executive Summary
Pet food and pet care registers steady growth in 2003
Pet food and pet care in Portugal is expected to register current value growth of nearly 6% in 2003, bringing sales to a total value of EUR165 million. This represents a slight downturn against the previous year but is nevertheless a steady rate of growth.
Sales as a whole are being affected by a slowdown in volume growth. Economic difficulties in Portugal and slower growth in pet populations largely caused this. However, it was partly compensated for in value terms by unit price increases and a greater focus on premium products, as consumers are encouraged to buy products with added value and quality.
New products are becoming available that tend to the increasingly specific needs of pets in Portugal. Similarly, Portuguese pet owners are becoming more aware of their pets' dietary needs and health requirements, as well as having a greater affectionate bond with their domestic companions, leading to a diversification of products and a tendency towards more premium purchases. Added-value products such as vitamin-enhanced food, single-serve dishes and a greater variety of variants within each brand helped keep value sales positive in 2002, despite economic difficulties in the country and poor growth in the pet population.
Dog and cat food still strongest in 2003
