Care of Hamsters
General Information Handling and Restraint Housing Hygiene ... Human Allergies Hamsters are small, virtually tailless, velvet-furred rodents with enormous cheek pouches. They originated in the Middle East and southeastern Europe. The most common and popular, both as pets and laboratory animals, is the golden or Syrian hamster. Color and hair-type varieties of the golden hamster include cinnamon, cream, white, and "teddy bear" (the long-haired variety). Most of the hamsters sold as pets or used in research are the descendants of 3 littermates domesticated in 1930. The cheek pouches are a relatively unique anatomic feature of hamsters. They are actually a cavernous outpouching of the oral (mouth) cavity on both sides, extending alongside the head and neck to the shoulders. These pouches are used to store food and allow the hamster to transport food from where it is gathered to the hamster's den or nest The food is then eaten later, at the hamster's leisure. Hamster owners not familiar with these cheek pouches often panic when seeing them fully distended for the first time, thinking they represent tumors or abscesses. Another relatively unique anatomic feature of hamsters is the paired glands in the skin over the flanks. These appear as dark spots within the hair coat and are much more obvious in males than females. These glands are used to mark a hamster's territory and also have a role in sexual behavior.

Owning a Ferret Ferrets can be a lot of fun, and under the right circumstances they can make wonderful pet. They are not the same as caring for a dog or a cat, and before getting one of these playful critters you should try to learn as much about them as possible. They are not, however, usually recommended in household with very small children. General Information Ferrets come in several different color schemes: the Fitch ferret is the most popular. Fitch ferrets have a buff colored coat with black markings on the face, feet, and tails. Albino ferrets are white with pink eyes. Some ferrets have a buff coat with light markings. The female ferret is called a jill, the male is a hob, and the infants are called kits.

olden hamsters are beautiful energetic creatures, but all too often they are confined to a tiny cage and pushed into a dark corner of the room.
HOME ALONE
In the wild golden hamsters live on their own and only meet other hamsters for the purposes of mating. If domestic hamsters are kept together, whatever their sex, they will almost certainly fight - causing serious injury and possible death. Another reason to keep hamsters apart is that they are fast breeders. If a hamster does give birth then you should leave the nest well alone. Disturbing the nest could make the female over-anxious and she will kill her babies. When the young reach puberty at five to six weeks they must be separated immediately before they start to mate or fight.
GOOD ACCOMMODATION
The home should be as large as possible - at least 750mm x 400mm x 400mm. It should be made of hardwood or covered with a plastic finish like Formica to prevent the hamster from gnawing through it and escaping. The home should have a sliding glass top for easy viewing. A wire mesh strip must be inserted in a wall to provide ventilation. It will also serve as a climbing frame. A raised gallery in the living area, connected by ramps, allows for the
bottom of the home to be used as a shredding and burrowing area.

Mice, Rats, Gerbills and Hamsters. These little sweeties are often chosen as pets for the first time animal guardian because they are relatively low maintenace and have gentle dispositions. Nutrition Commercial rodent pellets are available for Gerbils and Hamsters at pet stores. All four creatures have similar diets so if you have a rat, gerbil pellets are fine. For a more palatable diet, supplement the pellets with diced fruit and seeds, but don’t overdo it. These little guys have habit of filling up on the yummy stuff and ignoring the pellets, and eating that way will not satisfy their daily nutritional needs. Housing As the popularity of keeping small animals increases, more and more cages designed for them are appearing in pet stores all over. But, I recommend a glass aquarium with a screen cover. Ferrets - More like a cat than a rodent when it comes to care and maintenance. Rabbits - A hunny bunny can be a great pet if some basic needs are met.

Hamsters as Pets
When I watched my first hamster get acquainted in her new home, I saw her do something that first alarmed me. I left her alone with a full food bowl and returned later to find a swollen, thick little rodent, merrily trotting away on the exercise wheel. I was worried until I saw the hamster move to a particular corner of the cage and, with deft little paws, push what amounted to a quarter of her hamster feed out from her cheek pouches. This trait has earned the hamster its name, taken from the German word hamstern , which means "to hoard." The cheek pouch-filling technique is only one of several traits that makes the hamster an enjoyable, delightful pet. They are fun to watch as they go about their daily routine, and have a curious and inquisitive nature. Because they don't require much attention and can be left alone for short periods of time, they are easy to keep. Like any pet, hamsters require basic care, but they can be an excellent choice for a first-time pet owner. Author(s): Moira C. Harris

http://www.animed.org/hamsters_is_a_hamster_right_for_you.htm
I. Hamsters: Is a Hamster Right for you? INDEX For many people, a hamster's downright cuteness puts her at the top of their list of potential pets. But this companion critter has more than just a pretty faceshe's got more than a few requirements that need to be met in order for her to be happy and healthy. Read on to find out if you have what it takes to be a hamster caretaker. While scoping out hamsters, you may have noticed that some are larger than others. It's not that the smaller ones are youngermost likely they're different species. The most common are Syrian hamsters. These guys are about six inches long, and may have white, tan, orange-brown or gray markings; their average lifespan is 2-3 years. The most important thing you need to know about Syrians is that they are solitary by nature and MUST live on their own. That means one to a cageNO exceptions! Two- to three-inch dwarf hamsters, on the other hand, love to be with members of their own kind. If you want to keep members of this species, you must get at least a pair. Same-sex siblings are ideal, especially if you get them when they are young. These animals have an average lifespan of 1-2 years. Some say that dwarf hamsters aren't as friendly as Syrians, and their small size makes them extra-delicate. For these reasons, most experts recommend Syrians for first-timers. We've heard of many owners concerned because their hamster sleeps so much during the day, while others worry because their pets are up all night, running on the exercise wheel. Well, that’s perfectly normal behavior for an animal who's NOCTURNAL. That's right, hamsters are most active during evening and night, and snooze through most of the day. If you have a schedule that permits you to stay up into the wee hours to enjoy your pet, a hamster will fit nicely into your life. Please note that you probably shouldn't set up the cage in a bedroom, as busy hamsters can be pretty noisy when digging, scratching and, yes, running on the exercise wheel.

There are lots of hamster houses to choose from. A wire cage with a plastic bottom doubles as a jungle gym for your pet to climb on. Plus, it's easy to clean the plastic. Make sure the wire is small enough to prevent your hamster from escaping. You can keep dwarf hamsters in a cage made for mice. A ten-gallon aquarium with a wire cover makes a cozy home for hamsters of all kinds. The fancier cages with tubes, tunnels and hideaways are good, too, but they usually cost more and are harder to clean. And dwarf hamsters may have trouble climbing up and down the tubes. Help your little guys out by putting a special hamster ladderalso known as a thin tree branch!in the tube for them to climb. Hamster home decor
Now comes the fun partdecorating your new pet's home. You don't have to break out the miniature coffee table or chintz curtains, but there are some things you can do to make your hamster's home his castle. Fill the bottom of the cage with bedding so your pet can engage in the all-time favorite hamster sports of digging and tunneling. Use aspen or hardwood shavings, or recycled paper pellets available at pet supply stores. DO NOT use cedar or pine shavings, because they can make your hamster sick. All hamsters need a cave for sleeping and resting. You can use a small flower pot or a wooden box with an entrance holeor buy one from a pet supply store.

If the temperature gets too cold, they may go asleep (hibernation)
