Five Little Pumpkins Felt Board Rhyme
I've included the words to the rhyme below for you to copy OR you could print out our Five Little Pumpkins Mini Book OR our Five Little Pumpkins single sheet poem You can use the poem with the templates a few ways: give each child one of the templates and letting them hold theirs up at the appropriate time in the rhyme number the pumpkins so they know which is first, second, third, etc. (you can tape a straw or popsicle stick onto the bottom to make them like puppets... the kids seem to like waving puppets around more than just holding up pieces of paper).
You could also make the templates as felt board characters. Simply glue a small piece of coarse sandpaper or felt onto the back of each template so it will hang on the felt board. Place the pieces onto the felt board as you do the rhyme.
OPTIONAL: cover the templates in clear contact paper (bought as a roll from your local office supply store for under $5) to make them last longer.

For motorists: Stay alert. A normally quiet neighborhood will be busy with pedestrian traffic on Halloween. Trick-or-treaters are more likely to suddenly dart into traffic and from between parked cars, so motorists should be especially careful on streets where there are cars along the sidewalk. Children also are likely to forget to stop at the roadway, or to look out for you, or to listen for the sound of your vehicle. Their costume can also impair their ability to hear or see you - or to move quickly to get out of your way. Watch for children walking in the street. Be patient and SLOW DOWN. Give children lots of time to cross the street. Go to top For parents: Teach your children to always be polite when trick or treating - to say please and thank you and to not push other children out of the way. They should also treat homeowners with respect and never vandalize anyone's home, yard, yard ornaments or vehicles.

I n honor of the Halloween season, the last week of October has been declared "Earth Religions Awareness Week" in Asheville, NC. The mayor’s proclamation explains that Earth-centered beliefs, are "among the oldest spiritual systems on the planet" and that pagan practitioners "have given us practical knowledge of herbal remedies, midwifery and alternative forms of healing." That may sound good to all who have embraced the new global spirituality touted in schools, movies, and the wildly popular Harry Potter books . But some of the local pastors were understandably alarmed. Concerned that such a government endorsement could speed the spread of witchcraft, they led a group of 25 Christians to City Hall. "We just wanted to counter that by making a positive statement that we believe Jesus is Lord," said Pastor Ken Lewis of the West Asheville Baptist Church. Mayor Leni Sitnick apologized, but refused to rescind the special designation for the week of October 25. "I don't tell anyone how to believe, but I support everyone's right to freedom of religion," she said. "Being aware of different religions, of all religions ... should not be feared." Of course, a government proclamation is far different than public awareness. But never mind. These

KEEPING THE TREAT IN YOUR CHILD'S HALLOWEEN
Halloween is coming. While kids are thinking about their costumes and the piles of candy, parents need to think about the possible dangers their children could face during the frantic trick-or-treat festivities. "Halloween can be scary in more ways than the traditional sense. For kids, Halloween is one of the most dangerous nights of the year because of the many injuries that occur," says Karen Hardingham, R.N., program coordinator for Baltimore SAFE KIDS Coalition and nurse at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children. "Most parents worry about candy tampering. They're not always aware that pedestrian injuries, burns, and falls account for the majority of the injuries on Halloween," adds Hardingham. According to Hardingham, many of the risks children face can be avoided if parents follow a few simple safety tips and take time to talk to their children about safety before trick-or-treating. To help make Halloween safe for every child, the Baltimore SAFE KIDS Coalition at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children recommend that parents take the following precautions:

Many people view Halloween as a time of innocent fun. Children love to dress up as their favorite characters. They will go door to door saying the infamous words "trick or treat". Many adults also love Halloween, because it gives them a chance to let loose and act silly. Every year in the U.S.A. alone, millions of dollars are spent on Halloween goods. Halloween is the second highest grossing money maker outside of Christmas. The promotion of Halloween by the television moguls, the advertisers, and not to mention the blockbuster sales of movies and rentals this time of year. Everyone can see Halloween is big business. Alot of people do not see the harm in all of this Halloween hoopla. But yes, there is a darker side to Halloween than anyone dares to imagine.
THE ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN
Unlike our modern-day Halloween, theirs was not a children's holiday. The Celts and their priests, the Druids, from Great Britain and Ireland. They celebrated "SAMHAIN". It was a festival that marked the eve of the Celtic New Year, which began on November 1. The fall harvest was complete and winter was looming ahead. The Celts believed the sun was fading away, at this time of the year. For the next several months, darkness prevailed. The Celts believed that during "Samhain" the veil separating life from death was at its thinnest. On the evening of October 31, the evil spirits and souls of the dead passed through the barrier and visited the world of the living. The Celts believed these spirits could cause all kind of havoc. They also believed that they could talk with the dead, departed loved ones and such. They also believed that they could devine the future. The powers of darkness were conjured up on "Samhain". The Devil himself, would be called upon to foretell of future events.

HALLOWEEN Every year, on the evening of October 31st, millions of children across North America paint their faces, dress up in costumes, and go door to door collecting treats. The adults often decorate their houses with ghostly figures, carve scary faces on pumpkins, and put candles in them to create "Jack-O-Lanterns." Unfortunately, among the millions of North Americans indulging in this custom, many are also Muslims. This article will shed some light on the significance and origins of Hallow'een, and why Muslims should not participate in it.
Origins of the Hallow'een Festival The ancient Celtic (Irish/Scottish/Welsh) festival called Samhain is considered by most historians and scholars to be the predecessor of what is now Hallow'een. Samhain was the New Year's day of the pagan Celts. It was also the Day of the Dead, a time when it was believed that the souls of those who had died during the year were allowed access into the "land of the dead". Many traditional beliefs and customs associated with Samhain continue to be practiced today on the 31st of October. Most notable of these customs are the practice of leaving offerings of food and drink (now candy) to masked and costumed revelers, and the lighting of bonfires. Elements of this festival were incorporated into the Christian festival of All Hallow's Eve, or Hallow-Even, the night preceding All Saint's (Hallows') Day. It is the glossing of the name Hallow- Even that has given us the name of Hallow'een. Until recent times in some parts of Europe, it was believed that on this night the dead walked amongst them, and that witches and warlocks flew in their midst. In preparation for this, bonfires were built to ward off these malevolent spirits.

HALLOWEEN ALTERNATIVES
Chapter One
by Louis merryman
When I was a lad in the 1940s in South East Washington, D.C. we celebrated Halloween for two nights. On October 30th, Beggar's Night, everyone went "Trick or Treating." Even then, we went to selected houses for treats. Tricks were mild at best - not like the good old days when the emphasis was on tricks - like dumping over out houses. On Halloween Night everyone went down to Pennsylvania Avenue for a costume walk. This was our Fall Easter Parade. That's a thing of the past, too. While I was getting older, GREED entered the Halloween festivity scene. Halloween became a major commercial event with merchants pushing "Halloween" products such as decorations, candy and costumes. There was a lot of confusion on which night was Trick or Treat Night. Kids went out two nights. Kids are not stupid. Two nights means twice the amount of candy. Then, somebody in authority decided Trick or Treating was to be only on one night - Halloween. Now, only one night is celebrated with the expected costumes and begging. After Greed came true evil. Nuts came out of their shells. Candy and treats were spiked with chemicals and sharp things. Authority warned Trick and Treaters to accept only sealed wrapped treats. Treat givers were told to only give sealed wrapped treats. Candy corn, and stuff, wrapped lovingly in napkins and tied with a bow became a thing of the past. Danger stalked the streets. Beggars beware!

Following those emails is are articles on the history of halloween and a good halloween poem. Leviticus 19:31 REGARD NOT them that have familiar spirits, NEITHER SEEK AFTER wizards, to be DEFILED by them: I am the LORD your God. 20:6 And THE SOUL THAT TURNETH AFTER such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul , and will cut him off from among his people. 2 Chronicles 33:6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and DEALT WITH a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, TO PROVOKE HIM TO ANGER Are you angry that these scriptures are before thee? Will you "celebrate" Satan's holiday anyway? If so, your rebellion fits right in with Halloween. 1 Samuel 15:23 For REBELLION is as the sin of WITCHCRAFT, and STUBBORNNESS is as INIQUITY AND IDOLATRY.
