Ghosts, witches, jack-o-lanterns, black cats, and skeletons are all symbols of the holiday known as Halloween . Celebrated in the United States on October 31, it has become a festival where children dress in costumes and visit neighbors to ask for treats. The origin of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celts who inhabited parts of France and Ireland more than 2,000 years ago. At the end of the summer these people honored Samhain, who was the lord of the dead. On this day, the high priests of the Celts, or Druids , ordered the people to put out their hearth fires. The Druids then built a huge new bonfire that was considered sacred. Into this new fire they threw crops, animals, and even human sacrifices. Then each family relit its hearth fire from the new year's fire. It was believed that Samhain allowed the souls of the dead to return to roam the earth on this night. Many customs of the Celts survived after they became Christians. In 800 A.D. the Roman Catholic church established

Halloween is in trouble. Each year editorials in magazines and newspapers and on television warn of dangers to children. And each year more communities "ban" Halloween. So what? Who needs it? What is Halloween anyway? It's just an excuse for big kids to make trouble, little kids to eat too much candy, and candy companies to peddle their wares. Bah, goblin-bug! Or so I thought until, despite all the warnings, I took my three children out last Halloween. Nine-year-old Bobby was the boldest. Seven-year-old Heather held back and was reluctant to approach houses of near neighbors she didn't know well; but curiosity and pride in showing off her home-made witch's costume won out in the end, and she'd go racing after Bobby up the walk, and be just as delighted as he was at the smiles and words of praise and handfuls of candy that greeted them. Three-year-old Mikey held me tight and wouldn't let me put him down, but he wouldn't let me take him home either, watching all the doings intently. The same as previous years, many of the people we visited were folks we only see at Halloween even though they live just a few doors away. Most of them, the elderly especially, had bought supplies of candy and were waiting. Most gave out two or three times as much per kid as they had originally intended, because there were so few kids out. And they were as delighted to see the kids as the kids were to see them.

Easier - Halloween is a holiday that occurs annually on October 31. Children often celebrate by dressing up in strange costumes and going door-to-door begging for treats. Harder - In Celtic, pre-Christian times the evening of October 31st, then known as the festival of Samhain, was believed to be the night when the souls of the dead were out and about. Samhain was the Celtic Lord of Death. This was the biggest festival of the Celtic year. People gathered to sacrifice animals, fruits, and vegetables. The Celts believed that during Samhain, the ghosts of the dead were able to mingle with the living, because the souls of those who had died during the year were then traveling into the otherworld. The following day, November 1st was the beginning of the Celtic new year. By 800 A.D. the Christian church established All Saints' Day on November 1, so that people could continue celebrating the festival. The evening before All Saints' Day became known as All Hallows' Eve. Learn more about the history of this celebration at Halloween by J. Santino (

Cars Not Candy, Should be Parents Primary Safety Concern on Halloween Washington, D.C. Although many parents and caregivers worry about hidden dangers in their child’s candy on Halloween, they should be more concerned about their child’s safety as a pedestrian that evening. Each year, more than 650 children are hit by cars and killed and another 20,000 are injured and on Halloween, that number rises dramatically. In fact, children are four times more likely to suffer a pedestrian-related fatality on Halloween than any other night of the year. That’s why the National SAFE KIDS Campaign is urging parents to take precautions to keep their kids safe this Halloween. Check out the Campaign's Halloween Safety Checklist in both English (PDF) and Spanish (PDF).

    Trick or Treasure?
While many Christians correctly see Halloween as a time of occult dangers - when Satan is out in force trying to corrupt our society - they overlook the fact that all things are created by the Lord for a purpose. So what is the purpose of this dark time of the year?
Starting this year, witches are out and Jesus is in! Reclaim Halloween in the name of Jesus! (Artwork by Peggy Miller) Consider this: At what other time of the year do throngs of unsaved children come to your door, begging for you to give them a treat? Why not use this unique opportunity to give these deprived children the best treat of all - the treat of Christ's Love and eternal Salvation? Jesus Himself preached to the whores and money changers, the very people most in need of his Love. These unsaved trick-or-treaters - innocent children tricked by secular society and their non-Christian parents into participating in occult rituals - are exactly the ones in need of the Good News of Christ. And there they are, right on your door step!

    17. Should Christians Participate In The Halloween Holiday? - ChristianAnswers.Net
need to teach our children that the fight isn t against occultists, nonChristians,Christians who feel differently than we about halloween, or institutions
    http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/halloween.html
Should Christians participate in the Halloween holiday?
T he October 31st holiday that we today know as Halloween has strong roots in paganism and is closely connected with worship of the Enemy of this world, Satan. It is a holiday that generally glorifies the dark things of this world, rather than the light of Jesus Christ , The Truth. Have you noticed how costumes and masks are getting generally more bloody, gory, and depraved each year? Unfortunately, the gruesome and grotesque and the occult are increasingly glorified in American society, not only on Halloween, but throughout the year in horror movies and in television programs. My family does not celebrate it or participate in it. We do not believe that our children are "missing out," and neither do they. Other days are used for costumes and parties. Happily, all of our children have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior . We have found that Halloween provides an excellent time to remind our children that, as Christians, we are different, and not of this world ( Heb. 11:13-16

The mini-books are quite simple with images that should appeal to young children and a simple, familiar poem that children in Preschool thru Grade 2 should be able to read themselves after hearing it a time or two. Feel free to make as many copies as you need (just don't sell them as they're meant to be free for all to use. *grin*). Use our Five Little Pumpkin Felt Board Characters or our Five Little Pumpkins single sheet poem to complement the mini book.
    Materials:

    Directions:
NUMBERED PAGES: If you imagine a 'real' book for a second, you know that each page has printing on the front and the back. We're going to fold the pages to make it like a real book.
    Ignore the cover for now.
Fold each page along the center dotted line so the images are on the OUTSIDE and the blank sides of the paper are on the inside (imagine you're making a greeting card).
