If you have children, you are probably already overwhelmed with finding just the right Halloween costume for them. If they are young enough to require a trick-or-treat escort, make the effort to get into the act yourself. Dig out hanks of yarn, shabby old clothes, old bed sheets and anything else you can turn into a costume, and discover how much fun Halloween can be for grown-ups. Whether or not you dress up, it is easy to join in the party atmosphere this weekend by serving a menu of foods with Halloween colors and themes. Easy starters include carrot, sweet potato, or black bean soup, perhaps ladled out of a large pumpkin, or served individually in scooped-out miniature pumpkins. Black bean chili is a Halloween classic, but also consider grilled salmon accompanied by black bean salsa. Or, for quick, casual fare, roll up slices of grilled chicken with the salsa in an orange-colored wrap.

Take one haunted house, add ghoulish guests and stir in the following ingredients to yield hours of eerie enjoyment. Writer Sandra Lee, author of Semi-Homemade Cooking shares her ideas! Diabolical décor
Halloween is all about atmosphere, so dim the lights or use black or red bulbs to set the scene. Line your walkway with Halloween luminaries to lure your "victims" inside. Cover the furniture in white sheets and rent videos of old black and white horror movies, like Dracula or Frankenstein , to play on the VCR. To complete the nightmare, crank up the creepy tunes. The Monster Mash CD is frightfully fun, or buy a Scary Sounds CD . Don't forget the bathroom. For a touch of the theatrical, spatter fake blood in the bathtub and around the sink. For entertainment, tuck a fortune teller behind a black curtain and give each guest a 15-minute date with destiny. Fiendish finger food

Back to ljc's Projects Main Back to Ljc Blog halloween food You need spooky food for a halloween party. Aaron helped me make an array of finger food... three of which I think were the spookiest. Pumpkin Patch Dirt First we whipped up a batch of of dirt... the recipe of which I cannot give out... it's proprietary! Then we made green vines with the icing that comes with the tips included. Pop on some candy corn style pumpkins and marshmallow peep style ghosts. Boo! Meringue Bones These bones were extremely easy to mix up... a bit harder to pipe. I thought we should fill up a big piping bag... but Aaron thought the heat of our hands would melt the mixture, so we used a hard plastic piper... which took FOREVER to fill and it was small so we had to do it often.
Recipe found at britta.com via Not Martha But the bones turned out great! They were delicious and crispy. The longer they sat out though... the softer and stickier they became. Witch Finger Cookies We mixed up the almond cookie dough batter, and chilled it. Bit by bit we rolled out the dough into finger shapes and added wrinkles and almond sliver fingernails.

Back to ljc's Projects Main Back to Ljc Blog halloween food I wanted to make some different spooky food than last year, but it had to be easy, since I had to take care of trick or treaters the same night. I carved three little pumpkins with head wounds and arranged them on a tray with salsa oozing out of their heads. Yuck! Another medium sized pumpkin was carved in the style of the infamous puking extreme pumpkin. Guacamole then spewed out of his mouth onto the tray. Ewwww. We filled a rubber glove with red cherry kool-aid and put it in the freezer. It was pretty gross when we peeled off the glove. The hand went into a punch whipped together by Tina. It was made of raspberry sherbert, cranberry ginger ale and sprite. Ughhh! Everything looked great... to the point it was hard to eat!

Halloween Delights Presented by Mary E. Ross on October 30, 2000
"Nine out of every 10 teenage girls do not get the calcium they need in their diet. Without adequate calcium intake during their teen years these girls are placing themselves at risk for bone fractures now and osteoporosis later in life. A Salt Lake County 4-H foods club, called "That One Club," is doing something about it. During the month of October they have been studying dairy foods and how dairy provides 75% of the calcium in our diet. As a project, 11 year old Jane Lloyd and Mary Ungricht created Halloween recipes, which supply the calcium they need and provide the fun and taste teenagers look for. " Pizza Fondue in a Pumpkin Shell - by Jane Lloyd Ingredients:

  • 1 small pumpkin
  • 2 1/2 cups pizza sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • various bread cubes or sticks and Halloween shapes cut from bread, etc Method: Cut jack-o-lantern top on pumpkin, remove seeds and fiber, and clean. Replace top on pumpkin and place hollowed out pumpkin on a baking sheet in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes. This will partially cook pumpkin and serve as a hot holding container for the dip. Combine pizza sauce, seasoning, and cheeses in a small sauce pan. Heat through. Pour dipping sauce in hot pumpkin. Serve with bread cut in Halloween shapes as well as with bread cubes and bread sticks.
