Bad Breath Detectors - - Check yourself for halitosis! Then take action before anyone else notices! Bad Breath - - No one likes to talk about it, and no one likes to have it, but as many as 95% of Americans have "morning breath." And 40% suffer from chronic bad breath. Because you can't smell your own breath (and even your best friend probably won't tell you that you have it), you might be the last one to know. Now you can avoid this embarrassing and unpleasant situation.
This innovative palm-size monitor takes the guesswork out of bad breath! The BreathAlert detects and measures the presence of annoying or embarrassing breath odors any time, anywhere, 24 hours a day. HOW IT WORKS: BreathAlert's sensor measures the volatile sulfur compounds given off by bacteria in the mouth, which are the major source of breath odor. The device is simple, quick, and discreet to use. Simply turn on, breathe into the sensor for three seconds, and check the reading appears on the digital display. Easy-to-read icons indicate four levels of breath odor (none, slight, moderate, strong). The BreathAlert is only 3.5 inches long, so you can carry it easily in your pocket or purse. Dimensions: 3-1/2" H x 1-1/4" W x 5/8" D. Battery operated (batteries included). White.

    What causes bad breath?
Most bad breath (halitosis) comes from something in the mouth. Food sticks between your teeth, around the gums and on your tongue. If you don't brush and floss your teeth every day, this food can rot. The rotten bits of food cause a bad smell in your mouth. Rotten food also helps bacteria to grow in your mouth. This bacteria can cause gum disease, or gingivitis. Gingivitis also causes bad breath. The things you eat and drink affect your breath. Bad breath may also be a sign of a health problem. Return to top
What can I do to prevent bad breath?
    • Brush your teeth at least 2 times every day, using a fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to brush along the gumline, as well as all tooth surfaces. Each time you brush your teeth, use your toothbrush to clean the surface of your tongue. Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove food from between your teeth. Eat more fruits and vegetables every day. Eat less meat.

Bad Breath (Halitosis) What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info What Is It?
Bad breath (also known as halitosis) is breath containing an unpleasant odor. This odor can strike periodically or be persistent, depending on the cause. In many patients, the millions of bacteria that live in the mouth (particularly on the back of the tongue) are the primary culprits of bad breath. The mouth's warm, moist conditions make an ideal environment for these bacteria to grow. About 80 percent of bad breath is caused by something in the mouth. In addition, bad breath can be caused by the following:
    • Poor dental hygiene Infections in the mouth Respiratory-tract infections External agents Dry mouth xerostomia Systemic illnesses Psychiatric illness
    Symptoms
A person may not always know that they have bad breath. This phenomenon is based on the fact that odor-detecting cells in the nose eventually become accustomed to the constant flow of bad smells from the mouth. Others may notice and react by recoiling as you speak. Other associated symptoms depend on the underlying cause of bad breath:
    • Poor dental hygiene Infections in the mouth Respiratory-tract infections External agents Dry mouth Systemic illnesses
    Diagnosis
Your dentist will review your medical history for medical conditions that can cause bad breath and for medications that can cause dry mouth. Your dentist also will ask you about your diet, personal habits (smoking, chewing tobacco) and any associated symptoms described above, including when the bad breath was noticed and by whom.

    Halitosis Bad Breath
Halitosis is an oral health condition characterized by occasional or chronic bad breath. Common causes for occasional halitosis include smoking, drinking alcohol and coffee, and eating foods like garlic, onions, curries, salamis, and cheeses. Most halitosis originates as a result of sulfur gases produced by bacteria in the mouth. Gum disease is the most common reason for halitosis as the plaque that forms between the gum and the tooth is made up of bacteria, food particles, and dead gum cells. Colds and throat infections also cause bacteria growth as mucus serves as a breeding ground for bacteria.

It is usually the result of gum disorder, tooth decay, smoking, indulgence in aromatic foods, or a mild digestive upset. Known commonly as bad breath, halitosis may also be indicative of lung or sinus infection, uremia, or cirrhosis of the liver. The minty odor of acetone on the breath is a symptom of diabetes mellitus. Successful treatment of halitosis consists of eliminating or controlling the underlying cause. Proper diet and dental hygiene are often helpful. Mouthwashes and scented toothpastes mask the condition but do not alleviate it. A physician should be consulted for persistent cases of halitosis.

    Halitosis is bad breath. Description
Halitosis is a common problem that can be a source of embarrassment. Causes and Risk Factors
Halitosis may be related to a variety of causes, including bacterial infections and medications. Some bacteria in your mouth may produce gaseous compounds that cause bad breath. For some people, bad breath is caused by a dry mouth, which may be a result of medications you are taking or other medical conditions you may have. Bad breath is often found in people with periodontal diseases, including gum abscesses and mouth sores. These diseases are usually attributed to less than admirable oral hygiene, dentures, smoking or teeth restoration, such as bridges. Treatment
Brushing, flossing and seeing your dentist regularly may reduce bad breath. Some dental hygienists recommend brushing your tongue, since it traps large amounts of bacteria. Additional protection against the buildup of bacteria in your mouth can be achieved by rinsing with a mouthwash after you finish brushing.

    Considerations
Some medical disorders will produce specific, characteristic odors to the breath.
    • A fruity odor to the breath occurs as the body attempts to get rid of excess acetone through the breathing. This is a characteristic sign of ketoacidosis (such as diabetic ketoacidosis), a potentially life-threatening condition. A fecal odor to the breath (the breath smells like feces ) can occur with prolonged vomiting, especially when there is a bowel obstruction . It can also occur temporarily if the person has a nasogastric tube in place (a tube placed through the nose or mouth to the stomach to drain the stomach contents). The breath may have an ammonia -like odor (also described as urine-like or "fishy") in people with chronic kidney failure.
    edit
    Common Causes
If previously normal breath turns into halitosis, causes could include:
    • Food or beverages consumed (such as cabbage, garlic, raw onions, or coffee)
