HALITOSIS (BAD BREATH) Gabe Mirkin, M.D. Bad breath can usually be cured. Bad breath can be caused by food rotting in the mouth, stomach acid regurgitating up to the mouth and infections releasing chemicals that smell. Your doctor should look for white dots on your tonsils, that are often pieces of food that your saliva has turned white. You can remove them by gargling after every meal or by rubbing a Q tip against your tonsils. 1) NA Alsomal, KE Coley, PC Molan, BM Hancock. Long term follow up and serological study after triple therapy of Helicobacter pylori associated duodenal ulcer. American Journal of Gastroenterology 89: 10(OCT 1994):1793-1796. Conclusions: We conclude that seroconversion, which usually occurs after 1 yr, indicates complete eradication of H. pylori. Furthermore, we suggest that the success of the eradication of H. pylori can be judged without endoscopic examination, 8 months after treatment by triple therapy, according to the fall of IgG titers or seroconversion. Re-elevating IgG titers may be a warning of the possibility of relapse or reinfection of H. pylori. 3) H Benaryeh, G Horowitz, D Nir, D Laufer. Halitosis: An interdisciplinary approach. Results: The patients were found to suffer from otolaryngological disorders (26%), dental problems (23%), oral discomfort (18%), and gastrointestinal pathology (10%), or several of the above. In 31% of the patients, however, no clinical involvement was detected. The salivary flow rates in the patients were similar to those in healthy controls, whereas their oral Candida carrier rate was low (28%).

  • Bad breath that is of oral cavity origin can be traced to a sulfur compound produced by bacteria. Dead and dying bacterial cells release this sulfur compound which gives the breath an unpleasant odor.
  • Bacterial plaque and food debris accumulate on the back of the tongue. The tongue's surface is extremely rough and bacteria can accumulate easily in the cracks and crevices. Large amounts of sulfur compounds can be produced in this area, making it a frequent site of origin for bad breath.
  • The tooth attracts bacteria containing plaque and if not cleaned regularly and thoroughly, this can result in large accumulations of bacteria which result in bad breath.
  • People who have periodontitis often experience bad breath because of bacteria accumulating in areas that are not cleaned easily, such as deep pockets around teeth.

What is halitosis?
Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath. Learn how what causes it and how to treat it.
Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath. Nothing is more offensive than bad breath and nothing is more embarrassing than bad breath. Halitosis can be caused by poor dental hygiene, but that is not always the cause. Sometimes it is a sign of poor health. It could be due to tooth decay, improper diet a nose or throat infection, smoking, constipation, indigestion or liver malfunction. Learn how to find out why you have halitosis and in most cases cure it. If you have halitosis the first place to look for a cause is your mouth. How are your dental hygiene habits? You must brush your teeth and tongue after every meal, floss everyday and use a mouth wash in some cases. Get a dental check up and teeth cleaning. Your dentist can rule out conditions that lead to bad breath such as gum disease, tooth decay, or mouth sores. bodyOffer(19321) If your mouth is not the cause of bad breath the next step is to see if your digestive tract is at fault. Poor digestion is sometimes the cause and digestive enzymes are often helpful. If you get indigestion, sour stomach or constipation often, then you can probably guess that digestion is the cause of your bad breath. Chlorophyll tablets help freshen the breath and also improve the flora of the intestines. Acidophilus or bifidus supplements can be taken to maintain a healthy intestinal tract. Cutting out greasy foods and refined sugar from your diet can help digestive problems. If this does not help or you want to be certain that your digestive system is causing bad breath go to your physician. He can perform a test that can determine what the underlying problem is to halitosis.

Halitosis is a common problem with many causes. This vexing problem can be broken down into three main sources, the determination of which is needed in order to resolve.....external, intraoral, and extraoral. External Causes - This is the most widespread cause of transient bad breath. Many foods and drinks can cause mild to severe halitosis (garlic, onions, cheeses, alcohol, etc,). Most people are aware of these culprits and they cause little chronic problem. Smoking is a real breath killer, which can only be controlled by quitting. Intraoral Causes- The mouth itself is by far the most common source of halitosis. The culprits here are bacteria producing volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). These bacteria are found throughout the mouth but are most common on the surface of the tongue and in the tissue pocket below the gum line adjacent to each tooth. These bacteria thrive with poor oral hygiene and gum disease states (

Today's Question Help for Halitosis?
I'm concerned about the causes and natural remedies for bad breath.
Carl Bogenholm
Today's Answer (Published 05/29/1997) (Published 11/11/96) The usual cause of bad breath is bacteria growing on the tongue, and sometimes around the gum lines, too. There are a couple of simple ways to take care of the problem. First, try a tongue scraper. This is a metal instrument that you use to scrape your tongue once or twice a day, cleaning off bacteria. Second, you can brush your tongue with a germicidal toothpaste when you're brushing your teeth. Just take an extra 30 seconds to brush your tongue after you're done with your teeth. One such product that works well is chlorine dioxide, which is in some regular toothpastes (for instance, Oxyfresh). Or, use a toothpaste containing tea-tree oil. The oil is nontoxic and extracted from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia

Halitosis (Bad Breath)
What is halitosis?
Halitosis is an oral health condition characterized by consistently odorous breath. Often identifying the cause of bad breath is the first step toward treating this preventable condition. What causes bad breath?
There are just as many causes of bad breath as there are sources of bacteria in the mouth. Halitosis may be caused by the following:
  • certain foods
The things you eat contribute largely to your oral health care, including your breath. Items such as garlic and onions, or any food, are absorbed into the bloodstream, become transferred into the lungs, and become expelled in the air you breathe. Until that food becomes eliminated by the body, the potential for it affecting a person's breath is present. poor oral health care
Without proper and consistent brushing and flossing, and routine examinations by your dentist, food remains in the mouth, which is a breeding ground for bacteria, which, in turn, causes odorous breath. Food that is allowed to collect on the teeth, gums, and tongue may cause the gums to rot, which causes an unpleasant odor and taste in the mouth.

Halitosis? Halitosis, more commonly known as bad breath, is a condition that affects all people at some time. However, halitosis affects some people all of the time.
    What causes halitosis?
The primary cause of bad breath is the Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) that are produced by the bacteria in your mouth. VSCs are a waste product of anaerobic bacteria and account for 95% of halitosis. There are two types of bacteria in the mouth:
    Aerobic (good)
    Anaerobic (bad)
If you do not brush and floss daily, particles of food remain in the mouth and lodged in between the teeth. These food particles on the tongue, between the teeth, and near the gum line promote bacteria growth and emit an unpleasant odor. Dental appliances, such as: dentures, retainers, mouth guards, etc. can also harbor odor causing bacteria and food particles.
Persistent bad breath can also be a warning sign of periodontal or gum disease. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque; the soft, sticky, colorless bacterial film that grows on the hard surfaces of the teeth. Left to accumulate, this acid destroys the outer enamel of the tooth, irritates the gums to the point of bleeding, and produces foul breath. With regular dental visits, your dentist can detect and treat periodontal disease early.

These bacteria create waste products known as Volatile Sulphur Compounds (VLCs) on the surface of the tongue, throat, teeth, and periodontal pockets in the gums. Tongue and Throat Collect Bacteria If your Tongue has a white coating, this is evidence of excessive anaerobic bacteria buildup. Medications One of the most common side effects of thousands of medications is dry mouth (xerostomia). Bacteria tend to thrive in this environment. Dry Mouth / Mouth Breathing Mouth breathing during sleep dries the mouth, creating the dreaded 'morning breath'. Other causes of dry mouth include medications, exercise, dieting, alcohol or alcohol based mouth rinses, smoking. Diet Many foods (ie- Dairy) contribute to the ability of bacteria to create VLCs Acids in foods such as coffee decrease oxygenation and can cause this bacteria to thrive. Treatments [top] Brush and Floss Your Teeth Properly Bacteria thrive on food particles on our teeth to create Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VLCs), which cause bad breath.d
