AN INTRODUCTION STRUGGLES FOR FREEDOM HAITIANS IN AMERICA SPECIAL FEATURES ... SITE SEARCH In 1804 Haiti became the second independent country in the Western Hemisphere, after the United States. In 2004 Haiti will mark the bicentennial of its independence.
Haiti and the United States are neighbors. Over the past 200 years they have been linked by their geographical proximity and by interactions between their leaders and people.
Most Americans know little about interactions between Haiti and the U.S., or of the positive contributions to the U.S. made by Haiti and by Haitians. This website aims to contribute toward increased awareness about this. Perhaps some who explore it will be encouraged to dig deeper.

E-Mail This Article Published on Monday, February 23, 2004 by the Guardian/UK Throttled by History by Gary Younge PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI As civil war encroaches, civil society implodes and civil political discourse evaporates, one of the few things all Haitians can agree on is their pride in Toussaint L'Ouverture, who lead the slave rebellion in Haiti that established the world's first black republic. "The transformation of slaves, trembling in hundreds before a single white man, into a people able to organize themselves and defeat the most powerful European nations of their day is one of the great epics of revolutionary struggle and achievement," wrote the late Trinidadian intellectual CLR James in his book The Black Jacobins. The transformation of that achievement into a nation riven by political violence, ravaged by Aids and devastated by poverty is a tragedy of epic proportions. The nation's 200th anniversary this year looks back on 13 coups and 19 years of American occupation, and now once again looks forward to more bloodshed and instability. The country's political class must bear their share of responsibility for where they go from here. Western powers, particularly France and the United States, must also take responsibility for how they got to this parlous place to begin with. If Haiti shows all the trappings of a failed state, then you do not have to look too hard or too far to see who has failed it.

    The Haitian Flag:
For a country’s citizens, the national flag is indisputably a symbol of general pride. They would consider any offense to their flag to be an offense to their country. Beyond being an icon though, a flag’s origin can often say a lot about a nation’s social make-up or history. Haitians feel no different and even reserve a special day to honor it. That day is May 18 th In Haiti, Flag Day is a major national holiday celebrated with great fanfare on the grounds of the national palace. Flag Day is also observed by Haitians in the Diaspora. In The United States for example, teenagers whether in High School give homage to the red and blue by carrying it around with them or on their persona for at least a week. Haiti’s flag’s origin is tightly linked to a history of struggle for freedom.

Political History Posted: March 11, 2004 Early Beginnings: The First Successful Slave Revolt and a Free Nation When armed rebels launched an uprising Feb. 5, 2004, in the northwestern city of Gonaives that ultimately led to the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, their chosen site had historical significance. It was in that same western port city where Haiti's ex-slaves declared independence from France 200 years ago. On Jan. 1, 1804, Haiti became the first black republic when it won the world's only successful slave revolt. Since then, freedom has proved elusive as Haitians suffered under a series of dictators interspersed with more than 30 military coups.
Among the richest colonies of the 18th century French empire, Haiti, then called St. Domingue, depended on slaves imported from western Africa to work sugar and coffee plantations. France and Spain both fighting for dominance in the New World agreed in 1697 to divide the Caribbean island of Hispanola into St. Domingue and the Spanish-controlled Santo Domingo, or present-day Dominican Republic.
Across the Atlantic, however, the egalitarian principles of the 1789 French Revolution threatened to tear apart the empire. News of the democratic revolution inspired slaves in Haiti to rebel en masse against the French white colonialists in 1791. The slaves quickly seized control of plantations, but the rebellion was soon quashed by French, Spanish and British troops, all fearing the Haitian revolt could spark a wave of massive slave uprisings throughout the New World colonies.

The 5-page backgrounder details the history of the armed insurgents, from the dubious human rights record of rebel leader Guy Philippe, a former police commissioner, to the bloody past of Louis Jodel Chamblain, a former paramilitary.

GLOBAL BROADCAST EXCLUSIVE DEFYING WASHINGTON: HAITI'S ARISTIDE RETURNS TO THE CARIBBEAN In a Democracy Now! Broadcast Exclusive, Amy Goodman Travels With Aristide and Chronicles the Inside Story of this Historic Trip On March 14-15, 2004, Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman flew with Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and his wife Mildred as they made their historic return to the Caribbean. This was a trip the Bush administration did not want to happen. Aristide was accompanied by a delegation led by US and Jamaican lawmakers who chartered a Gulfstream jet to escort him back to the Western Hemisphere. The delegation was made up of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA); Randall Robinson, TransAfrica founder and close friend of the Aristides; Sharon Hay-Webster, Jamaican MP who was representing her prime minister and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM); and Ira Kurzban, Aristide's Miami-based lawyer. Washington Post reporter Peter Eisner was also with the group. From every stop of the journey, Amy filed detailed reports by satellite phone and she conducted the only on camera broadcast interview Aristide has granted since his removal from Haiti.
