Inside recent Haiti History
(Editor's note: for the past 2 decades Patrick has been a one-man foreign aide program for Central America and Haiti. He has taken bus loads of medical supplies and tools to these countries. He knows the territory from firsthand experience with the people.

By Patrick Young
In 1994, President Clinton sent in the Marines to restore the elected president of Haiti. It was a simple act of decency that earned him no votes. It was about as popular as sending troops to Somalia, and was quickly forgotten by most Americans.
Last week, in a move of staggering hypocrisy, President Bush sent in the marines to help a gang of ex death squad leaders, drug dealers and cashiered military men retake control. It does sounds unbelievable, but even the generally sympathetic US press had to point out this glaring fact.
Guy Philippe, the so called "rebels" leader, is actually a mutinous former police chief who fled Haiti in 2000 after he and his cronies attempted to overthrow the legal government. He and now feuding partner Louis Chamblain, (a convicted murderer and death squad leader) the leaders of this phony "rebellion", have been on the payroll of drug traffickers for years. Interestingly enough, Philippe also trained with the US Secret Service in 1995, and in all likelihood was groomed for the role he is now playing by the CIA. Philippe, ever so respectful of the democrat process, promised to kill the elected president if he did not flee, and then murdered his way south to the capital, killing over 100 allies and supporters of the President.

History Hopital Sainte Croix of Leogane, Haiti , a 120 bed general hospital, is the base of operations for the regional health care program serving the Commune of Leogane in the Department de l'Quest, Republique d'Haiti. The hospital is owned by the Episcopal Church of Haiti (EEH, Eglise Episcopale d'Haiti.), and is operated in partnership with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
The Reverend Pierre Thevenot, who was parish priest at Leogane for twenty-two years and who had started the Sainte Croix complex, began the medical program in about 1968. Mrs. Edith Cutler, who was a patron of many significant EEH programs, donated a small dispensary on the site to be operated by the Episcopal Church. The Facility included space for two ward, but did not operate inpatient beds at that time. Dr. Etienne was the Haitian physician-director of the program.
In 1973-74, construction was started on an expanded facility and the EEH entered into a partnership agreement with the Presbyterian Church US (PCUS) Division of International Mission headquartered in Atlanta. At the invitation of the Bishop, Dr. Rion Dixon, a South Carolina physician trained in Mexico, became the first appointed missionary medical director. Facilities during that administration included the new hospital building (expanding the original dispensary facility), the first floor of the present Guest House, and the Medical Director's Residence.

Illustrations come from the book of Hermann and Montas and should not be reproduced. The island on which Haiti is located (Hispaniola) had been inhabited by various cultures before the arrival of Columbus. The first known settlers of the island were the Ciboneys who migrated from what is currently the North American continent in 450 A.D. These people were followed in 900 A.D by the Tainos (good people) who were members of the Arawak nation and had origins in the Amazon valley. The Tainos were a peaceful agricultural people who lived in large villages (Caciques) and cultivated corn, weaved cotton, worked in pottery, carved furniture, weaved baskets and invented (?) the hammock. These villages were also peopled by a small number of friendly Caribs who had emigrated from what is today South America. The Tainos called the island Ayiti which meant `land of mountains'. Most of the Carib nation was however viewed by Arawaks as ruthless warriors. Indeed, in the language of the Tainos, Caribs meant cannibal (whether these people were anthropophagic or not is still debatable)! In the late 15th century Caribs from neighboring islands had started to encroach on the eastern tip of `Hispaniola', killing the men and enslaving the women.

The History Of Haiti
A tiny tropical island sits in the Caribbean, decorated with palm trees and colorful hibiscus flowers. Its mountains stand majestically looking down upon sandy beaches and green valleys. From afar it appears as any other island one might encounter sailing the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. Yet, as we draw closer we notice a difference. There are no tourist resorts dotting the coasts, no high rise hotels with sand volleyball courts and marimba bands. This is Haiti, this is different. If the land could speak it would tell of tragedy and violence, of abuse and bloodshed, of power and greed. Why does the country stand apart from its neighbors? The answer lies in the turbulent history of this tiny nation.
The Early Years
Christopher Columbus landed on the tiny island he called, "La isla espanola" in December 1492 (The name was later shortened to Hispanola). The island was inhabited by local Arawak Indians who referred to their home as "Hayti", or mountainous land. In keeping with imperialistic ideology, the Spaniards used and abused the native Arawaks to the point of near extinction.

From these brief facts you will see a history of a truly resilient people, who fought off December 5, 1492 Columbus discovers haiti (the island of Hispaniola).
    http://www.language-works.com/Haiti/history.htm
Take the time to read the following chronology. From these brief facts you will see a history of a truly resilient people, who fought off slavery and survived civil wars, countless massacres and truly oppressive leadership. The Haitians proclaimed themselves the first black republic in the world in 1804, and have remained independent to this day.
    December 5, 1492
: Columbus discovers Haiti (the island of Hispaniola) : The Spaniards cede the western third of Hispaniola to the French crown at the Treaty of Ryswick. Haiti is now called "Saint Domingue". : Saint Domingue becomes the richest colony in the world. Its capital, Cap Français, is known as the Paris of the New World. It is also a regime of extraordinary cruelty; the 500,000 slaves taken by the French are flogged, starved, and buried alive for minor offenses. August 1791 : the first major black rebellion takes place, initiated by Boukman, a voodoo houngan . This begins the markings of civil war between the black dominated north and the mulatto dominated south. : Toussaint L'Ouverture, an educated herb doctor and military man, emerges as the leader of the former slaves in the north. He restored order, ended the massacres, and restored some of Saint Domingue's former prosperity.
