    Culture Shock and Haiti
    Bob Corbett
I've been thinking some about the cultural shock that comes from returning from Haiti . I keep hearing this from many people in our groups and others too. But, I haven't heard anyone do much reflecting on exactly what's going on, what's valuable in this experience, what's merely some romantic urge for OTHERNESS . So, I thought I'd begin the process. Your comments and thoughts would be appreciated. I often feel a sort of vague and general dis-ease when I return from Haiti. I have named it a dislike of American culture, or a cultural re-entry shock. But these labels explain little, and the first seems simply false. I have lived and continue to live in the United States and I am much too happy a person to continue on in this happiness if I'm truly living in a culture I dislike. What's going on here? The central difference between life as we encounter it and work with it in Haiti and our lives in the United States has to do with basic survival. Life in Haiti, in the circles of our work and primary concern is basic survival. People struggle for daily food, they scrounge for potable water, they hunt for the basic health care to stay alive, they search for shelter from the rains, bugs, rats or beating sun. They struggle to find part-time work on a daily basis. They are underclothed, underfed, undersheltered and undertended. On the other hand, most of us from the middle and upper classes not only have all of these things but we take them for granted, view them as sort of birth right. Our struggles are for growth, security, personal pleasure, entertainment, enrichment, culture etc.

    BBC News, Port-au-Prince
No one knows just how many weapons there are in Haiti. It's just one of many statistics that has fallen victim to the lawlessness, chaos and political mayhem here.
Most of the guns in Haiti come from the disbanded army Most of the guns now being carried by armed militias here came from the Haitian army. It was disbanded in 1994 by Jean Bertrand Aristide, then newly restored as President of the troubled Caribbean nation by an American-led multinational military force. He had been overthrown by the army three years earlier when he won election as Haiti's first democratically elected head of state. Breaking up the army was seen at the time as a bold, necessary step. It was a way to get rid of an institution that had plagued Haiti with military coups and human rights abuses for generations. But the legacy of Haiti's army is the vast number of rifles, pistols and shotguns wielded by ragtag militia groups today.

The world's first black-led republic and the first Caribbean state to achieve independence, Haiti's pride has been dented by decades of poverty, environmental degradation, violence, instability and dictatorship which have left it as the poorest country in the Americas.
A largely mountainous country with a tropical climate, Haiti's location, history and culture, epitomised by voodoo, with its associated music, drumming and dancing, had once made it a potential tourist hot spot. However, instability and violence, especially since the 1980s, have all but killed off this prospect. OVERVIEW
    FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA For years Haiti had been notorious for the brutal dictatorships of the voodoo physician, Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier, and his son, Jean-Claude, or "Baby Doc". But hopes that the election of Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1990 would herald a brighter future were dashed when he was overthrown by the armed forces a short time later. Although economic sanctions and US-led military intervention forced a return to constitutional government in 1994, Haiti's fortunes did not pick up, with allegations of electoral irregularities, continuing extra-judicial killings, torture and brutality.

    http://haitiforever.com/windowsonhaiti/note-ed.shtml
Windows on Haiti is designed to facilitate a positive learning of Haiti's culture. Haiti lies at the crossroads of Modern Civilization. Her story (OurStory) reflects the tumultuous dynamics resulting from the forced meeting of three worlds and three races of people. To many, that image translates today into the sum of all our world's ills.
Haitians have survived in a geopolitical environment that has been undeniably hostile to them from the day they voiced their desire to live free in a sovereign nation and ever since. Notwithstanding, they have created a startlingly different way of life, a unique signature of Religion, Arts, Language, and above all a sense of identity deeply rooted in spirituality and collective remembrances.
We aim to present you some interesting windows on Haiti's culture. True exploration begins when you venture beyond them and engage in respectful contact and discovery.
This web site has emerged as a labor of love for my native country. As such, I dedicate it to her friends and children, the painters and the poets, the researchers and the students, the drummers and the dancers, the musicians and the storytellers; to all participants in and contributors to the uplifting aspects of her culture; to the unsung heroes; to the makandals, the boukmans, the peraltes; to the marie-jeannes and the madam-saras; to the gwo-zoteys and the restaveks, the illiterate and the famished.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank my family for allowing me to spend an inestimable amount of time and resources to this endeavour.

A Case of Mistaken Identity: Antihaitianismo in Dominican Culture
Ernesto Sagás For over a century and a half, Haiti and the Dominican Republic have shared the island of Hispaniola. Their relationship, however, has rarely been amicable. In the Dominican Republic, this antagonism has led to the creation of a set of anti-Haitian prejudices called antihaitianismo. Antihaitianismo is actually the present manifestation of the long-term evolution of racial prejudice, the selective interpretation of historical facts, and the creation of a nationalist Dominican false consciousness. That process, of course, did not take place spontaneously. It was orchestrated by powerful elite groups in the Dominican Republic with strong interests to defend.
The Origins of Antihaitianismo The early origin of what later came to be known as antihaitianismo is to be found in the racial prejudices of the Spanish inhabitants of the colony of Santo Domingo (Tolentino Dipp 1973, 1992). Spanish colonization in the 16th century brought sugar, slavery, and racial prejudice to the island. A white Spanish elite controlled the colony's administration and ruled over a mixed population of creoles and slaves. On the other hand, the dominance of cattle ranching as the colony's main economic activity lessened racial tensions and even promoted miscegenation. That does not mean that slaves were treated as equals. Slavery existed, slaves were mistreated, and slave rebellions were severely punished. Furthermore, the color of one's skin indicated to a large degree one's social standing and economic position (Tolentino Dipp 1973, 1992).

Taking Haiti: Military Occupation and the Culture of U.S. Imperialism, 1915-1940 > Customer Review #1: A study of the imperialism of the U.S., a bit overstated

Paternalism is the central theme of Mary Rendas analysis of the US involvement in Haiti during the early part of the 20th century, an imperialistic foray in to what most Americans (including the thousands of US Marines sent there) considered to be a "backward," undeveloped land of childlike inhabitants. Renda asks two questions in this well-written book: "who did US American men think they were in Haiti and how did the people of the United States imagine themselves when they read about their nations occupation there?" (9) She structures her study in two parts, in order to answer each of these concerns.
Despite these limitations, Taking Haiti is an excellent study of the imperialism of the U.S. in which Renda identifies clearly the racial, sexual and gender apparatus that came along with the marines, all under the cloak of interventionist paternalism, the "cultural fabric" of Haitian occupation. Weekly Special Report January 15, 2004 American Museum of Natural History Focuses on Haiti's Culture By Judy Aita Washington File Staff Writer New York Saluting the 200th anniversary of Haiti's independence, the American Museum of Natural History is highlighting the country, its culture and arts as the subject of its "Living in America" series beginning January 10. "In presenting the 'Living in America' series, the museum works in collaboration with a wide variety of cultural and community-based organizations in New York City," said Myles Gordon, vice president of education at the museum. "The museum designed this series to reflect our experiences as a world and a nation of many cultures, examining how our differences are a fundamental strength that we share, as well as an ongoing challenge." Each year the museum's "Living in America" series showcases a different culture and community. "The Haitian Experience" celebrates the rich and diverse arts and culture of the more than 500,000 Haitians living in the three states surrounding New York City New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, Gordon said. The series offers a wide range of programs, from performances and films to lectures and panel discussions. One cold January day was warmed with Caribbean heat by the compelling drum rhythms of master drummer Frisner Augustine and the aroma of classic Haitian dishes drawing visitors to the wing of the museum where some of the artists who are participating in the month-long event were giving a preview of their presentations for journalists January 7.
