Port au Prince - Culture Gingerbread trim and a view of the harbor are about all Port-au-Prince has in common with other Caribbean capitals. It's a backward city, but it's no backwater. Much of the activity is centered on the Marche de Fer (the Ironmarket), a 19th century iron and tin mix of Paris train shed and Indian minarets. It's chaos inside, packed with stalls, vendors and piles of fruit, baskets, soap, religious totems and toys. It's hot, noisy and likely to overwhelm the faint of heart. Good places to seek post-shopping repose are the Cathedrale de Port-au-Prince, where the decor owes as much to Africa as to Rome, and the Cathedrale de la Ste Trinite, where you can gaze up at murals by some of the country's most famous artists. The Musee d'Art Haitien du College St Pierre has an excellent collection of paintings. The Musee National is more of a national curio cabinet, featuring King Christophe's suicide pistol and a rusty anchor reputed to have been salvaged from Columbus' Santa Maria. In the hills to the southeast of the city is Petionville, as close as the country gets to typical Caribbean resort culture. Galleries sell Haitian art, and restaurants serve some of the best French cuisine in the country. The Jane Barbancourt Distillery in Boutiller, a few miles east of Port-au-Prince, makes nearly two dozen varieties of rum, including flavors like coffee, coconut and hibiscus. You can taste samples and buy bottles at bargain prices.

Hinche - Culture The bigger part of the population is black, and the official languages are Haitian Creole and French. The school system retains French as the main language The official religion is Roman Catholicism, but the constitution allows the free choice of religion. Some of the people practices also voodoo. East of Hinche, Bassin Zim is a 20 m waterfall in a lush setting 30 minutes drive from town (head east on the Thomassique Road, then fork north at Papaye). The cascade fans out over a rounded, sloping, and limestone rockface. At its foot is a 60 m wide natural pool with deep, milky-blue water that is perfect for swimming. Pandiassou is a tiny village along the main road going west out of Hinche toward Maissade. Bishop Laroche of the Diocese of Hinche called Kobonal the "darkest corner of the Diocese of Hinche." The villagers lived in isolation in an environment where fear and superstition dominated their lives. There are regular flights from Port-au-Prince to Hinche.

The storyteller uses a different voice for each character in the story, and may sing songs as part of the narrative. Culture: Arts and Cultural Values Haiti's uniqueness is reflected in the originality of its paintings, music, and literature. Artists and musicians, drawing from the rich folklife and vitality of the people, have created internationally-recognized works and sounds. Haitian paintings of the "naive" or "primitive" school have long been recognized around the world; works by more famous artists have been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and France. Handicrafts such as wood carvings and tapestries also employ this primitive style. Haitian music, like Haiti itself, is an original blend, containing elements of African drum rhythms and European dance music. Haiti has also produced writers, poets, and essayists of international standing. Haitian literature has been written almost exclusively in French; however, with the recognition of Creole as an official language, novels, poems, and plays are being written increasingly in Creole. In 1975, the first novel to be written entirely in Haitian Creole was published;

2-le tourisme d'escale;

haitiAN PROVERBS. haiti is a nonliterate culture. 80% or more ofthe people neither read nor write. Consequently, wisdom is oral.
http://www.handsofhope.org.uk/ah_culture.html
AYITI'S CULTURE
Although Voodoo is still practiced by a large number of people, there is also a large variety of other religions practised.
CULTURAL VALUES
Marriages or Plasaj As stated earlier Haitians are very close and have strong family values. They have a marriage practice called the Plasaj. In UK we would call this a common law marriage. The Plasaj is most prevalent among the impoverished people. It is not uncommon for a person to have a dozen Plasaj relationships in a lifetime. This is mainly due to the way they network and close extended family relationships. The children of the Plasaj relationships are not treated differently - they are treated as family - there is no differentiation. FOLKLORE AND STORY-TELLING In Haitian culture, story tellers play an important role. They are called griots just as they are in Africa. The griots tell your family history and give you perspective on your future and what you may leave behind as a legacy. MUSIC AND DANCE The poorest nation in the western hemisphere is among the richest when it comes to music. This is a people whose most popular religion worships the deities through singing, drumming and dancing. The prime musical influence is African, although European elements are to be found, but none that are Amerindian.
