In the individual event they perform different routines with four of the five apparatus. In team competition, teams of five perform together once using clubs and once with two using hoops and three using ribbons.

A team should be able to use all its potential Olympic players, the logic went. For Romania or the USA, no matter, but for a team that hovers around 12th (12 qualify) and has, say, an Elodie Lussac who will be 15 in the Olympic year, it could make all the difference. For the record, Boginskaya (born Feb. '73) and I think another Soviet were able to compete in Rotterdam '87 because of this rule. In '91, Strug and Sonia Fraguas (Spain) were similarly blessed.

I will say, though, that the technical, aural, and voice acting aspects on both language tracks get better with each volume. The content for the two volumes, however, is quite different: VOL. 4: BATTLEGROUND: ***** out of ***** This is the third best of the NADIA DVDs; we are treated to more character development (Nadia disrespecting other people who have opinions different from hers about killing and eating meat, Jean's insatiable curiosity and love for technology and Nadia), terrific action sequences (a wonderfully paced and executed chase sequence in Episode 13 where Marie and Sanson outrun a mechanical walker), heartfelt moments (Jean painfully getting a glimpse of the dangers of technology when it claims the life of a new friend of his, as well as he and Nadia bonding throughout the volume, especially the last episode), and some truly imaginative artwork (the lost kingdom of Atlantis on the last episode). Definitely a nice pickup after Vol. 3, although not as strong as Vol. 2 or emotionally satisfying as Vol. 10.

“All for one, and one for all.” That sent shivers down your spine, didn’t it? Well, Hollywood knows that Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers” continues to capture the imagination of people world-wide, so there seems to be an endless stream of “Musketeer” movies. 2001’s “The Musketeer” is the latest entry in the Dumas derby, and its gimmick is to have the musketeers fight like...Hong Kong martial artists. That’s right, the filmmakers hired Hong Kong fight choreographer Xin-Xin Xiong to design the action set pieces in “The Musketeer.” Our hero, D’Artagnan (Justin Chambers), hangs off of ceilings like Jackie Chan does in his movies. D’Artagnan effects kung-fu-ish moves while defending a horse carriage. There’s a fight where a couple of guys hang on ropes from a tower and acrobatically slash at each other in mid-air. There’s a final showdown between D’Artagnan and his mortal enemy where the two use ladders in a wine cellar as if they were gymnasts. And, throughout the entire film, barrels are everywhere. There’s not a scene that goes by where a barrel doesn’t seem to have some importance. That’s all fine and dandy, but these fight scenes mean little without a strong story to back them. As it is, “The Musketeer” offers the slimmest of narrative details. D’Artagnan witnesses the murder of his parents as a little boy. He grows up wanting to become a King’s Musketeer like his father, but Cardinal Richelieu (Stephen Rea) and his henchman, Febre (Tim Roth), have schemed to disband the Musketeers. So, guess what? D’Artagnan has to fight Febre, his parents’ murderer, and he has to save the King and Queen (Catherine Deneuve, utterly wasted in a thankless role) of France from political intrigues. Along the way, our anachronistically martial-artist hero enjoys a romance with Francesca (Mena Suvari), the daughter of the Queen’s seamstress.

Dolan, Bennett bring home gold for U.S. swimming
Latest: Wednesday October 11, 2000 01:48 PM AP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) American Tom Dolan crushed the 400-meter individual medley field and broke his own six-year-old world record Sunday. It was his second consecutive Olympic gold in the event. Dolan had the Australian crowd of 17,500 on its feet as he won in 4 minutes, 11.76 seconds, lowering his old mark of 4:12.30 set at the 1994 world championships in Rome. "It was a tough swim," he said. "I was feeling it coming home, but I knew if I got out ahead no one could beat me." Dolan's mark was the eighth world record in two days of swimming competition at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre. Erik Vendt of North Easton, Mass., held on for silver in 4:14.23. Curtis Myden of Canada won bronze in 4:15.33.
