She inherited a program which hadn't finished better than fifth at the Big Ten Conference Championships for seven consecutive seasons and built it into a perennial contender for the NCAA championship. The six-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, four-time NCAA Regional Coach of the Year and 1994 National Coach of the Year has led the Wolverines to nine consecutive appearances at the NCAA Championships and has guided the team to two second-place finishes. She has helped the Wolverines win the Big Ten title, NCAA Regional title and make an NCAA Super Six appearance in the same season on four occasions, including each of the last three seasons. Last season, she led a talented freshmen class and an experienced group of returning gymnasts to a third-place finish at the NCAA Super Six with the team's highest score at the national championships, 197.275. Individually, she coached Elise Ray to a share of the NCAA all-around national title the program's first and saw four athletes earn seven All-America honors. Nine gymnasts earned a spot on the All-Big Ten team and three of them captured event titles at the conference championships. Features 1999 Michigan Men's Gymnastics Mike Burns Assistant Coach Second Season Norwood, Mass., native Mike Burns begins his second season as assistant coach for the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team. Burns came to Michigan after an accomplished career as both a gymnast and coach throughout the United States. Burns lettered in gymnastics at Penn State University four years (1977-80), beginning his career as a walk-on athlete. He received his undergraduate degree in geological sciences. During his years as a Nittany Lion, Burns competed at three NCAA National Championships, reaching the finals on the high bar in 1980. When his collegiate competition days were over, Burns became a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa. He worked his way to become a full-time assistant coach, and in 1989 Burns was the recipient of the NCAA National Assistant Coach of the Year award. Burns stayed at Iowa until 1991, coaching four national team members, 15 NCAA All-Americans, 16 Big Ten individual champions and one Big Ten Championship team title. After leaving Iowa, Burns became a coach at several gyms across the country, including Gymnastrum in Allentown, Pa., the YMCA in Tacoma, Wash., and the Albuquerque Gymnastics School in Albuquerque, N.M. I try to visit extended family of Alberts, weddings etc. BHS memories: As years go by, I am increasingly nostalgic. Kenny Baker visited me several months ago and I claimed that everyone looks or sounds the same. Since I have been in L.A. for so long, my biggest BHS memories are more of growing up in Brookline and explaining snow, streetcars and high school to my kids. Just life as a kid in 1960; selling sub sandwiches in Harvard, B.U. and M.I.T. dorms with Elliot Cuker and his brother. If anybody had a car, going out as a group to pizza places in Central Square or ice cream places on the north shore. The real loyalty of my friends who would pick me up on a Friday or Saturday night at 9pm when I finished work at the New England Food Fair on Harvard St. THOMAS AMIRIAN JR.
