Living in Bizzaro World
The craziest thing happened to me this morning....
The secretary called me over and said she had something from my principal to give me. I started thinking, "Oh, not another last minute grant application/piece of paperwork/extra duty!", but to my surprise the secretary handed me a piece of paper stating my principal had nominated me for teacher of the year. My jaw dropped. I'm not used to such positives...normally we hear only the negatives.
Regardless of what happens, just the knowledge that my principal believes I am worthy of nomination makes me happy. I can't help being that little kid waiting for the words of praise from my teacher...it's finally come, and I'm feeling good.
I think I'll get out my gold stars and give one to myself! :-)

How do we get kids to work towards quality rather than just completion? I struggled with this for a long time, and this year I finally really and truly get it: AUDIENCE and REFLECTION.

Gymnastics 4: The Turners and Others in America
The Turner movement had the biggest long-range effect on American gymnastics as we know the sport. As previously noted, tens of thousands of Jahn's Turners emigrated to the United States during the late 1840s and early 1850s, and they formed societies in major cities. The first was the Cincinnati Turngemeinde, founded on November 21, 1848. Soon, there were other organizations in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Brooklyn, and Louisville. In September of 1851, the Philadelphia Turngemeinde hosted a gymnastics festival at which a national organization, the Socialistischer Turnerbund, was founded. Arguments over slavery hampered the organization for the next decade, as many local societies adopted abolitionist planks while others wanted to stay out of politics and focus on physical activities. The Turnerbund dissolved under the pressure during the Civil War, but a new organization, the Nordamerikanischer Turnerbund (North American Gymnastic Union), was organized in 1865. Immigration from Germany reached more than 100,000 a year after the war ended and, by 1867, there were 148 local societies in the the Union. Turners actively campaigned for physical education programs in schools and colleges and, in many cases, helped set them up. In 1866, the union founded a seminary to train physical education teachers. It had its greatest success after 1874, when it moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, under the leadership of George Brosius.

http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/docs/physed/safe/gym.html
GYMNASTICS GENERAL GUIDELINES Kindergarten to Grade 9
SUPERVISION KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE 9
The Basic Movement Pattern (BMP) approach to gymnastics used in the Saskatchewan physical education curriculum is such that safety considerations are built into the program. By teaching landings - one of the basic movement patterns - teachers prevent injuries. Many injuries that occur in a gymnastics context - and in other physical activities - are the result of landing incorrectly. Teach students how to land safely in a variety of situations and have students practice landings regularly so they are learned to the point of becoming reflex reactions. Spotting - manual assistance provided to participants while performing skills on the floor or on equipment - is not appropriate in the elementary gymnastics program. Many gymnastics injuries are the result of attempting skills that students are not ready to perform. If the student needs spotting, this is a good indication that the student lacks the necessary physical or motor skills. Rather than have the student attempt the skill with a "spot", more activities that lead up to the skill can be provided. Not only does this approach prevent the tendency for students to become dependent on a spotter, it reflects the reality that in a large group setting the teacher cannot spot all the students. Mat work comes before use of equipment. A teacher who is unfamiliar with any gymnastics equipment can seek assistance from appropriate support staff and/or refrain from using the equipment until help is received.

Defining Non-Traditional Gymnastics Feeling confused or overwhelmed as to what non-traditional gymnastics is? You're not alone. Some of the leading professionals in the field were polled and asked the meaning of the following terms : Traditional Gymnastics :
" A series of stunts that are presented to students in a more formal, and developmentally appropriate manner." "Stunt gymnastics that is judged in some manner by official judges, audiences or teachers." " Focus is placed on skills and sequences performed on the major, traditional pieces of equipment (e.g. beam, bars, floor, etc.). All students, regardless of body type or skill level, are judged and held to the same standards." " Olympic gymnastics " Developmental Gymnastics : " A sequential list of skills having common neuromuscular elements and representing an ever more complex form of the same general type of movement. " " Gymnastics aimed at developing reasonable and modest skills of a gymnastic nature suitable for the kind of body one has."
