"HOW YOUR CHILD WILL BENEFIT FROM GYMNASTICS LESSONS"
Gymnastics has often been described as:
"The Sport that Requires the Grace of a Ballerina and the Power of a Linebacker" It is a sport that creates the foundation for success in other athletic areas because it is based on movement and the enhancement of the body through more complex actions and acrobatics. The skills acquired by gymnasts will compliment the other sports they play. Athletes who play any sports like soccer, swimming, diving, martial arts and dance can experience higher levels of success and heightened awareness because of their physical development through gymnastics. At Starr Gymnastics Centre, we ensure our programs contribute to well-rounded development of our athletes with a focus on flexibility, coordination, strength and power. Why is Flexibility Important?

    64. Gleason's: Why Gymnastics?
gymnastics offers the teacher tremendous opportunity to teach listening and socialskills. A good gymnastic program is structured around the above ideas.
    http://www.gleasons.com/Pages/WhyGym.html
    Why Gymnastics?
Is your child going to be a gymnastic star in future Olympic games?
Maybe - but probably not. If not, why should they have gymnastic training? The fact that children naturally find gymnastics to be "loads" of fun may be sufficient cause for some parents to have their child in a gym program but other parents may seek more justification for their expenditure of time and money.
While few children become advanced gymnasts, all children will attend school and many (hopefully all) will participate in some form of athletics. Educators tell us that children's success in school and athletics is strongly influenced by earlier experiences that help to shape a child's self-concept. Children need positively reinforcing experiences that will help them to believe that they can solve problems and that they can have control over their lives. Very young children can also benefit from successful social interaction; learning to interact with their peers; learning to be in a class; listening and following directions. A child who has developed a strong sense of confidence and self-esteem, and who also can relate well to others, is going to approach future situations with confidence and a good chance of success.
A good gymnastic program is structured around the above ideas. The sport of gymnastics can be used as a vehicle to enhance children's adaptation to both academics and sports. It is important to learn the movement concepts involved in a skill as well as learning the skill. Most important, each child must experience a maximum of success and a minimum of failure! The focus should be on the development of self-esteem rather than skill acquisition. Not all children can perform a given skill well, but they can all learn to feel good about what they can do.

You Are Your Child's First Teacher
by Rahima Baldwin Dancy The importance of what our children learn in the home and through their relationship with us forms the irreplaceable foundation of all that comes later. Mother, childbirth educator, midwife, and Waldorf educator, Baldwin aims to deepen our understanding of the nature of the young child as a whole beingbody, mind, emotions, and spiritso enabling us to meet their needs for balanced development. It is Baldwin's sensitive, sincere, and ever-so-natural tending to the soul and spirit, as well as mind and body, of the newborn and young child, that makes this a very special book. In a society which values intellectual development above all else, we tend to ignore other aspects of development. We reason with our children as if they were grown ups and teach them with techniques appropriate for much older children. Distrustful of natural processes, we believe we have to do something in order to ensure our child's development. Milestones of the first three yearswalking, talking, thinking, and memoryoccur by themselves, according to their own timetable. Trusting natural processes does not mean that we do nothing, but that the things we do need to be consonant with the child's own developmental stages. The world of the young is critically endangered, as more and more children are placed in daycare in infancy, and academic pursuits are pushed onto younger and younger children.

Anderson The sport of Gymnastics consists of thousands of moves most of which are named after the first person to compete them successfully at the international level of competition. Our sport has changed tremendously over the years with the addition of better types and styles of training aids, equipment, and a better understanding of how the human body performs and heals itself. Unfortunately it is human nature to be slow to accept new information and to actually apply it in the gym. (Imagine 54 kids one coach high school gym and minimal equipment) Scary fun!! Having always coached groups where the children were at different levels of ability based on physical maturation, social ability, and psychological readiness to sweat combined with only some with a willingness to perform in front of a crowd. I needed to develop a fast format that would allow me to teach any skill rapidly, easily, and effectively to anyone willing to listen and follow direction. I searched for all the information available in the library and took the NCCP program first offered in 1976/77. As well as each revision of the program since that time. It was a shock to have my 2 year diploma in Physical Education summarised in 42 pages, reviewed and tested in two days for $10.00 $5.00 for the manual.(1977/8)

    Introduction
rhythms can be incorporated into the middle school curriculum. The following are two ideas to introduce dance at this level.
    Rhythmic Tennis Ball Passing
The old saying "there is power in numbers" may apply to the teaching of dance and rhythms. By introducing a rhythmic activity where a group of people are a team and by putting a familiar piece of equipment in each student's hand, the teacher may find the "power" to motivate the middle school student.
Rhythmic tennis ball passing is performed by a group of six to eight students standing in a circle. Each student has a tennis ball in his/her right hand. Simple passing patterns are introduced and performed to music with a peppy 4/4 beat. Sample passing patterns include: Teach one pattern at a time. After one pattern is mastered, teach the next pattern. After the second pattern is mastered, combine pattern one and pattern two by performing each pattern four times. Continue to add new patterns and combine patterns after they have been introduced. Other patterns may be created by the students. Encourage

Gymnastics Programs Girls Recreational Program Our vast gym size makes our program unique from any other in Northern California. We have an entire area dedicated specifically to the class program. Gymnasts can test their skills on nine sets of bars, eight balance beams, a trampoline, the floor area, and vault. In addition, the class program has access to a tumble track as well as a number of resi-pits (those are the pits with the trampoline built in!) Classes are divided by ability and gymnasts track their progress on sticker posters. When a gymnast's poster is filled with stickers, it is time to move up to the next level. Certificates and ribbons are awarded each time a gymnast achieves a new level. In addition, the class program offers many optional events where the athletes can show off their skills. Each winter, Technique conducts a Holiday Extravaganza where routines on each event are performed in front of family and friends. In the spring and summer, we offer a series of fun-filled gymnastics events where children can perform a routine to music out on the Olympic floor.

    Whitten's Knowledge of Gymnastics
I started taking gymnastics when I was five years old and have love it ever since. I was know as the "daredevil" of the group, and would try anything. My dream was to go to the Olympics, but that dream came to an end. When I was in my freshman year of High School I was playing flag football, and broke my ankle into. My doctor told me that my ankle would never be strong again to compete. I was so devistated. So I watch it on television and read up on it. Two summers ago I was a counselor at a camp and I was the head teacher of gymnastics. It was a lot of fun. I did not miss a day of the Atlanta Olympics, my roommate was tired of it by the end. I thought it was awesome. I hope in the future that I can have my own gym and teach gymnastics, and make some dreams come true. I have searched the net and come up with some awesome links. I would like to share them with you. So click on the world to go to any of them. Thanks for taking you time in this link.

Greetings, my name is Kathleen Mcloughlin! Welcome to my Rural Gymnastics web page. Gymnastics used to be my favorite hobby in Elementary school. When the chance arose to teach gymnastics in a rural VTschool, I thought it was a super idea, and I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Every Tuesday and Thursday my mentor (Bob Long) and I met with the Hancock children, and we worked on specific things. Each day it would get harder, and as a result, the children improved on their skills. Then I started working on my senior paper, which was about bad coaching hurting a gymnast mentally, and physically, but also about the good aspects of coaching. Senior Project was a great opportunity, and even though I was really scared to begin this project, I'm really glad that I had the chance to teach gymnastics. It was fun, however I know now that I would like to peruse a different subject when I enter college. Click here for more pictures
