HUMANS ... Clicking Bodies and Minds T.A.G. Teach - Clicker Training Gymnastics by: Theresa McKeon - Tmckeon537@aol.com Clicking Gymnastics Theresa McKeon, of Tampa, Florida, has been coaching girls' gymnastics for 25 years, for statewide and national competition. She writes: "I've gone through every trick in the book to motivate these atheletes. They are incredibly intelligent and very sensitive to feedback. We demand incredible things from these girls and our job as coaches is to critique even the slightest muscular movement. Their skills are executed so quickly that it is hard to stop and give any vocal reward. This is where clicker training comes in handy. After having amazing results with clicker training and my horse Romeo, I brought the clicker to workout. The kids loved it! The only reward was the sound of the click. You would have though I was handing out ten dollar bills! Boy, do they let you know if you forget to click!" What kind of thing was Theresa clicking? One example is a good landing. We've all seen gymnasts on TV, even the best Olympic gymnasts, take a little mis-step when they hit the floor. "It's an expensive mistake," Theresa reports, "because it's one thing the judges can all agree on: did she 'stick' perfectly?" To make a good landing, the gymnast has to push away from the floor before she lands, not after. The gymnast may not know quite how to do it, but if her leg muscles are contracted properly the coach can spot it and click her while she is still in the air, in that microsecond before she hits-Yes! That's a click!

http://www.pjc.cc.fl.us/academics/gymnastics/TheProgram.htm
The Program PJC Gymnastics offers professional gymnastics instruction to students in Pensacola and the surrounding communities. The classes are offered to students ages 18 months through adult. The main focus of the program is to teach students gymnastics in a safe and positive environment. PJC takes pride in the small classes thus offering more individual instruction and a safer atmosphere. Today the program offers over 25 preschool classes and more than 40 classes for students in the first grade and above. The Mommy and Me classes are designed for children 18 months through two and a half years old and their parents. The main focus of the class is to teach the children in a positive, safe and, "mommy-secure" environment. The students work on eye-hand coordination, motor skills, strength, agility, and body awareness with the aid of their parents. The equipment used is smaller and designed especially for preschoolers. At the present time, PJC offers three Mommy and Me classes that are one hour long and meet one day a week. Tiny Tumblers Classes The Tiny Tumblers classes are designed for children three and four years of age with a student/teacher of 6:1. The focus of the class is a positive learning experience while working on basic motor skills, eye-hand coordination, strength, agility, and beginning gymnastics skills. The children work on all the gymnastics equipment, which is lowered for their height, as well as specially designed preschool equipment. At the present time, PJC offers ten Tiny Tumblers classes that meet for one hour, one day a week.

Turn-teach Gymnastics Lecture Notes
During the EY turn-teach gymnastics lecture a number of issues raised in the turn-teach games lecture arose, the following additional observations were made:
  • When you ask the children to demonstrate their work make sure the demonstration serves a purpose - try to avoid having demonstrations simply for the sake of filling time! Make sure if you give a demonstration it is the best you can do - sloppy demonstrations often lead to sloppy work from the children eg. don't allow running with arms folded, hands in pockets etc... Pinpoint what it is you want the children to observe during the demonstration and ask questions to check that they have observed it eg. before demo ......... "I want you to watch my legs carefully as I jump and land" after demo............ "who can tell me what happened to my legs as I landed?" etc..... If a demonstration is performed well by the child(ren) - tell the class why you liked it ie. reinforce the quality of work you desire through demonstration. If you are making specific reference to safety aspects on the apparatus, then these instructions should be given immediately prior to when the children are about to start their work. Thus, safety instructions are 'fresh in their minds' at the time of performance.

Good Practice Underpinning
Early Years Gymnastics
  • starting point is to look at what actions the children can already do when they start school eg. roll, slide, jump, walk, run, climb, crawl, balance - in so doing, the children can achieve a level of success from the outset the children should be taught to recognise these movements and put a name to them (and also body parts) ie. learn the language of movement skills (reception) children then apply these skills in different contexts (Year 1) all children must be given the opportunity to explore, select and practise these basic actions therefore set challenging open-ended tasks that allow the children to respond at their own level eg. instruction starts as, ‘find a way of.......’ when they are ready, teach them specific skills, broadening their movement vocabulary make the children aware of the surrounding space ( spatial awareness ) and how this can be used emphasise controlled and safe use of the body , without removing the challenging aspects of gymnastics - teach awareness of safety issues encourage them to link movements into simple sequences (Year 2) exercise the body, so that children strengthen muscles, maintain flexibility and build up stamina

Should I keep my child in gymnastics class if he says he wants to stop?
By Marilyn Segal, Ph.D. [See Biography]
Question: If my child has no interest in his gymnastics class, should we keep going anyway?
Answer: If you want to send a message that quitting isn't okay, here's what you can do: The next time you go to class, tell your child that this is the last day of gymnastics. Make this very clear by telling him he needs to say goodbye to his friends and instructors. This way, he won't feel as if he just quit; he'll simply believe that class ended. If he suddenly becomes inspired to participate, either at his last class when he feels sad that he won't be coming back anymore or weeks after, don't bite. Tell him you're glad he's interested and that when class starts up again, he can try gymnastics one more time. Let a few weeks pass, and if he still talks about going back, you can then decide if you're willing to sign him up again for one more go.

I highly dont advise you to try to teach someone how to do a backhandspring w/o taking a coachin clinic or w/o having taken gymnastics up to level 10. I have been cheering for 8 years n i have a layout and i sitll wouldnt feel comfortable teaching come1 a backhandspring. But if you must know how to do one...
Some people clap before them but jus dont worry about that now... tahts easy to add or take away.
Start out standing with you legs together. Bend your knees and act as if you are sitting in a chair. Jump backwards with your arms straight. Lock out elbows and dont turn your hands in. If you turn your hands in, your elbows will bend and you will smack your face on he ground. Push off using your elbows and pull form your stomach to get you over. DO NOT TRY THIS WITHOUT A SPOTTER BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT TO BE RESPOIBLE FOR SOMEONE BEING HURT. YOUR BEST BET WOULD BE TO DO "CHEER TUMBLING" that is desgined o teach you the things you need to do for cheerleading tumbling! hope i help ! =)
