Two gymnasts awhirl in New York City Karaoke with Couric, other media events keep Athens favorites busy
11:29 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 18, 2004
NEW YORK – They are learning the meaning of the word "whisked." World champion gymnasts Carly Patterson and Hollie Vise are being whisked from one Manhattan media event to the next. And every time their names are in lights, North Texas vaults into the Athens Olympics picture. With less than three months until the Games, Patterson of Allen and Vise of Dallas are becoming accustomed to fame. Both teens train at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Plano. And both had TV gigs in New York, where they formed two-thirds of the women's gymnasts contingent chosen to face hundreds of reporters and minicams at the U.S. Olympic Media Summit on Monday. Houston entertains delegation City officials go all out to host USA Gymnastics Olympic trials
By DAVID BARRON reprinted by permission HOUSTON, TEXAS Because Houston already was one of five finalists to host the USA Gymnastics Olympic trials next year, federation officials probably expected a dozen or so faxes in support of the city's bid. They might have even expected the second dozen. But when seven dozen faxes from clubs across the state in support of Houston arrived at headquarters in Indianapolis, federation officials called former Houston City Councilman John Kelley to say he had made his point and could he please stop the faxes. Kelley complied. But he'll be back in full sales mode today as USA Gymnastics president Bob Colorossi and other federation officials tour the new downtown arena and the George R. Brown Convention Center to assess Houston's chances to host the trials.

Gymnastics Gymnastics in Maryland Special Olympics gymnastics combines strength, flexibility and artistry. Competitions are offered for men in the artistic events and women in artistic and rhythmic events. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to their ability level, age and gender. Gymnastics is one of Special Olympics' expanding sports. Today 7,837 athletes in 80 Programs around the world train and compete in gymnastics. Women may compete in up to four events in either artistic or rhythmic competitions. The artistic events include uneven bars, the balance beam, vaulting and floor exercises. The rhythmic competition includes rope, hoop, ball and ribbon. Men may compete in up to six events in artistic gymnastics. Men's artistic events include floor exercises, pommel horse, rings, vaulting, parallel bars and the horizontal bar. For the well-rounded athlete, the all-around competition offers an additional challenge. Men and women may choose to compete in every event, which qualifies them for the all-around. Unified Sports™ opportunities are offered in gymnastics. This program invites individuals with and without mental retardation to compete on the same gymnastics team as partners. Its success in promoting teamwork and inclusion can be seen throughout Special Olympics.

It contains nothing that you can't find elsewhere, in much more quality books. It doesn't even feature Amanda Borden - despite the fact that she was the team captain! Making Olympic History New York Times At the first modern Olympics in 1896, Melpomene became the first female to compete, although unofficially, in the games. Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

History of the Sport of Gymnastics
Gymanstics, as an activity sport, has been around for over 2000 years but as an competitive sport it is a little more than 100 years old. Mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various clubs and ethnic groups such as the Turvereins and Sok ols. While it was slow-growing in the club area, it was fast-growing sport in the Turvereins and Sokols. In 1830s, the sport of gymnastics was introduced to United States and its school systems by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Franci s Lieber. In 1881 the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed, later was renamed to Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation. This organization pioneered the international competition. The Amature Athletic Union (AAU) was formed in United Sta tes in 1883. Along with other amature spotts in United States, this organization took over the control of the gymnastics in U.S. Various "championships" started to develop by various clubs and organizations at about the same time during 1880s. The first large-scale competition was the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. There Germany have been the dominant team by almost sweeping every medal. Five countries have participapted in this event. Men's competitions included horizontal bar, parall el bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault.
