At the 1976 Games in Montreal Comaneci amazed the crowd, and officials, by becoming the first gymnast to record a perfect score of 10 in Olympic competition. Even more amazingly, she achieved the feat six times during the Games. In doing so, the Romanian teenager became a household name around the world, and one of the most popular figures of the Montreal Olympics. Gymnastics 9. The Current State of Gymnastics
Although the Eastern European countries are still forces to be reckoned with in international gymnastics, they no longer dominate the sport as they once did. More and more nations are producing world-class gymnasts. Since 1984, China has emerged as a major gymnastics power, but several other countries have also produced medal-winners. At the 1996 Olympics, 12 different countries claimed medals, including Greece, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Korea. Russia and China took the bulk of the medals in 2000, but France won two, its first since 1972, and Spain won its first ever gymnastics medal when Gervasio Deferr took the gold in the men's vault. In the meantime, gymnastics has expanded to include other disciplines. Rhythmic gymnastics was recognized by the International Gymnastics Federation in 1962 and world championships were inaugurated in 1973. It became an Olympic sport in 1984. Trampoline and tumbling were once part of the standard gymnastics program. Tumbling was included as a gymnastics event at the 1932 Olympics and both trampoline and tumbling were included in the AAU and NCAA gymnastics championships for many years. Sports acrobatics , which had developed as a separate sport during the 1930s, has also become a gymnastics discipline, and was offered as a demonstration sport at the 2000 Olympics.

Notebook: Olympic sports decline on campus By Seattle Times news services

Myles Brand E-mail this article Print this article Search archive Most e-mailed articles The Joint NCAA/USOC Task Force includes 16 people with knowledge in collegiate and Olympic sports and will work for 18 months. While no dates have been set, the group is expected to meet at least four times. "This task force is an important step in stemming the decline of Olympic sports programs on NCAA campuses," NCAA president Myles Brand said. "Obviously, colleges and universities are faced with significant economic issues with regard to athletics programs. But the benefits these student-athletes bring to campuses and the benefits many ultimately share with the nation on the Olympic stage should not be minimized when institutions make budgetary decisions." Olympic sports are often the first to go when NCAA schools face budget constraints. Wrestling, men's gymnastics and swimming-and-diving programs have been hit particularly hard. In men's gymnastics, for example, there were 202 teams in all NCAA divisions in 1972. Now there are about 20. That limits opportunities for student-athletes, the NCAA said. It also hurts the USOC, which has relied on NCAA programs as a source of current and future Olympic-caliber athletes as well as coaches. From 1980 to 2000, about 94 percent of U.S. Olympians were attending or had attended NCAA schools.

NCAA president Myles Brand will be the keynote speaker Thursday for the National Wrestling Coaches Association convention at the Hyatt Regency. The convention is held in conjunction with the U.S. Olympic Trials in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling. The trials run Friday through Sunday at the RCA Dome. Brand will be the first NCAA president to address the wrestling community, according to USA Wrestling. He recently announced a joint NCAA/U.S. Olympic Committee task force to study the decline in Olympic sports at the college level. "Obviously, colleges and universities are faced with significant economic issues with regard to athletics programs," Brand told The Associated Press last week. "But the benefits these student-athletes bring to campuses and the benefits many ultimately share with the nation on the Olympic stage should not be minimized when institutions make budgetary decisions."

Nemov in action on the horizontal bar
Gymnast Alexei Nemov became the leading medal winner at the Sydney Games when he took gold in the horizontal bar. The 24-year-old Russian took his haul to six, equalling his Atlanta tally four years ago. He has now taken gold in the all-around event and horizontal bar as well as silver in the floor exercise and bronze in team, pommel horse and parallel bars. "I was lucky today," Nemov said. "Actually, I cold be pleased with one gold medal, and the victory in the horizontal bar competitions is an excellent result for me. "We shall attend a reception tomorrow night, and I shall drink as much champagne as I can." Nemov captured six medals in 1996, the most of any athlete, including gold in team and vault, silver in all-around and bronzes in horizontal bar, pommel horse and floor. Hopes He was hoping four six gold medals this time around but saw his hopes go up in smoke with bronze in the team event.

Monday, 21 August, 2000, 08:37 GMT 09:37 UK Miller's Olympic dream in tatters
Seven-time Olympic medallist Shannon Miller's hopes of making the US gymnastic squad for Sydney ended in tears on Sunday when she was forced to retire injured. Miller was one of several members of the so-called "Magnificent Seven", who swept all before them at the Atlanta Games in 1996, aiming to be recalled to the team. The squad was hand picked by US coach Bela Karolyi who lead the team to victory in the Atlanta Games in 1996. Injury had already put paid to the hopes of Dominque Moceanu. Costly However, two of the Atlanta gold-winning squad will travel to Sydney. Amy Chow and Dominique Dawes were among six women named after the Olympic trials which had influence on Karolyi's decision but no binding mandate on his ultimate choice. The other four gymnasts were US champion Elise Ray, Kristen Maloney, Morgan White and Jamie Dantzscher. Two-time Olympian Miller injured her knees on the landing of her opening vault and withdrew from the competition.
