ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS HISTORY
Photo Volker Minkus : Jordan Jovtchev (BUL)
Origin of Artistic Gymnastics
Gymnastics is one of the oldest Olympic sports, and was first practised at the ancient Olympic Games when the competitors performed a variety of events that could loosely be termed "gymnastics". These included wrestling and vaulting over bulls, according to illustrations seen on ancient clay pots. In fact, the name "gymnastics" is derived from the ancient Greek word "gumnos" which literally translated means naked. Because of this, women were excluded from the ancient Games, not just as competitors but also as spectators ! The sport in its modern form first evolved during the 19th century, when two styles of gymnastics were in conflict : the Swedish system (mainly freestyle group exercises) and the German system (using apparatus). Large open air gymnasiums began to appear in Europe during the 19th century, resembling adventure playgrounds where gentlemen could impress their lady friends with a spot of rope-climbing. It was regarded as a great form of discipline by the army, and many military terms still exist today, such as "marching on" ans "saluting the judges". The international governing body for gymnastics, the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) was founded in 1881. There are currently 125 federations affiliated to the FIG.

Brief History of the World Championships
CHALK UP AND DIVE IN
Imagine the great Nadia Comaneci dismounting from the uneven parallel bars then diving into a swimming pool to compete in the 100-meter freestyle. Or Blaine Wilson competing in the rope climb or Svetlana Khorkina running the 100-meter dash. If these gymnastics stars competed in the World Gymnastics Championships of the early 1900s, there's a good chance sports fans would see athletes in this unusual lineup of "gymnastics" events. The format of today's World Gymnastics Championships is a far cry from the sport's initial contests. Antiquated events including the rope climb and Indian clubs, along with swimming, running, long jump and high jump, were part of early gymnastics competitions. Many competitions were held on the infield of outdoor track stadiums. These early events became a test of the all-around sportsman rather than of the all-around gymnast. THE EARLY YEARS
The first world championships were in the Velodrome du Sud in Antwerp from 14-18 August, 1903. Four nations; Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Holland participated. The official title of World Gymnastics Championships was not used until 1934. In 1922, the FIG agreed the Worlds would be contested every four years. Women first competed at the Worlds in 1934 in Budapest in the all-around, team and individual events, and at the Olympics in 1952 in Helsinki.

Gymnastics History Gymanstics, is such a fun sport, has been around for over 2000 years but gymnastics as a competitive sport has been around for100 years. The gymnastics soprt was conducted by various clubs and ethnic groups such as the Turvereins and Sok ols. While it was slow-growing in the sport area, it was fast-growing sport in the Turvereins and Sokols. In 1830s, the sport of gymnastics was introduced to United States and its school systems by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Franci s Lieber. In 1881 the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed, later was renamed to Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation. The Amature Athletic Union (AAU) was formed in United States in 1883. Along with other amature spots in United States, this organization took over the control of the gymnastics in U.S. Various "championships" started to develop by various clubs and organizations at about the same time during 1880s. The first large-scale competition was the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. There Germany have been the dominant team by almost sweeping every medal.
Five countries have participapted in this event. Men's competitions included horizontal bar, parall el bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault.

Trampoline became a competitive event in 1936. From 1947 through 1964, trampolining was included as an event in gymnastics competitions by both the AAU and NCAA. The first trampoline World Championships were held in 1964, and trampoline was first recognized as a sport in its own right in the United States in 1967. Trampoline made its debut as an Olympic sport at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Description of Events TRAMPOLINE Trampoline routines are performed on 7'x 14' web or string beds that can propel the gymnast up to 30 feet in the air. A competitor takes as many preliminary bounces as necessary for height and control, before beginning the first of 10 skills in a routine. Two routines are performed, a compulsory and a voluntary. The compulsory routine must include four required elements, plus six other skills chosen by the athlete. The second routine is a 10-skill voluntary, made up of single, double or triple somersaults with multiple twists. No skill may be repeated within either routine. A successful routine will show consistency of height, proper technique and a minimum deviation from the center of the bed. The routine must end under control in an upright position. SYNCHRONIZED TRAMPOLINE
Synchronized trampoline demands the same athletic skill as individual trampoline, while adding the element of precision timing. Athletes perform two routines, a compulsory and a voluntary. Using two trampolines, two athletes perform identical 10-skill routines at the same time. In this most artistic event, each performs a mirror image of the other, doubling the visual beauty of the competition. The goal is to have both trampolinists in total synchronization of skills, height and form.

Historic Merger Paves the Way for Trampoline in the 2000 Olympics
On January 1, 1999, the sports of Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline became part of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). The former federation for these sports, the International Trampoline Federation (FIT), voted in October to merge with FIG. This was the first time in the history of the International Olympic Committee that two international federations have merged. The merger opened the door for trampoline to become an official medal event in the 2000 Olympics. There will be 24 athletes competing in individual trampoline competition, 12 men and 12 women. Negotiations are also taking place to have synchronized trampoline included in the 2000 Olympics.
Ron Froehlich (USA), President of FIT since 1990, was unanimously elected by the FIT Congress to represent the FIT in the FIG Executive Committee and the FIG Council. Heinz Kunz (GER), was elected chairman of the first FIG Technical Commission for Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline. World Championships will be held in the uneven years. The three disciplines (synchronized trampoline, tumbling, double mini-trampoline) will be able to participate. Individual trampoline will be ineligible, due to its acceptance as an Olympic sport.

Whatever pride Australia has taken in its Olympic triumphs of the past, one sport Australians have never been able to crack at the supreme level is gymnastics. But by combining Russian strength and athleticism with Chinese skill and precision as well as American management flair, the Australian women's gymnastic team can, for the first time, seriously consider scaling the dizzy heights at the Sydney Olympics. Since the Atlanta Games, Australia has recruited top gymnastic coaches from Russia, China and America, resulting in a rapid rise in world rankings and predictions of Olympic medal contention.
