Gymnastics - History
Gymnastics is one of the world's oldest sports and can be traced back thousands of years. In 2000 BC, the men and women of Ancient Greece developed the sport of bull jumping, which is similar to the vaulting exercises you see today in modern gymnastics. In bull jumping, the athlete would run towards a charging bull , grab its horns and either vault onto the bull's back or vault over the bull in a somersault and land on his or her feet on the other side of the bull! This early event required both courage and strength , as well as grace and style. The Ancient Romans used gymnastics as part of their military training to improve the strength, balance and flexibility of soldiers. In the 1800s, gymnastics exercises using rings, bars, balls and mats were developed by gymnasts in Germany and Sweden. Gymnastics have been a part of the modern Olympic Games , since they were first held in 1896. Rhythmic gymnastics, which combines gymnastics and dance, and makes use of

Gymnastics, a Brief History
What it is.........
Gymnastics n.: systematic form of physical exercise designed for therapeutic, educational and competitive purposes. Therapeutic or Remedial Gymnastics is a series of selected exercises that help relieve physical discomfort or restore function to disabled people. Educational Gymnastics is a program that challenges students to master tactics involving strength, rhythm, balance, flexibility and agility. Competitive Gymnastics consist of prescribed sets of events for men and for women, each of which is scored separately in order to determine a winner.
History
The first gymnastics were the circuslike acrobatics performed in ancient Egypt.
In the 2nd century BC, men and women of Minoan Crete developed the art of bull leaping. In bull leaping the performer would run toward a charging bull, grab its horns, and, upon being tossed into the air, execute various midair stunts before landing on the bull's back and dismount with a flip. In Ancient Greece, three distinct programs of gymnastic exercise were developed: 1. To maintenance of good physical condition

Trampoline became a competitive event in 1936. From 1947 through 1964, trampolining was included as an event in gymnastics competitions by both the AAU and NCAA. The first trampoline World Championships were held in 1964, and trampoline was first recognized as a sport in its own right in the United States in 1967. Trampoline made its debut as an Olympic sport at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Description of Events TRAMPOLINE Trampoline routines are performed on 7'x 14' web or string beds that can propel the gymnast up to 30 feet in the air. A competitor takes as many preliminary bounces as necessary for height and control, before beginning the first of 10 skills in a routine. Two routines are performed, a compulsory and a voluntary. The compulsory routine must include four required elements, plus six other skills chosen by the athlete. The second routine is a 10-skill voluntary, made up of single, double or triple somersaults with multiple twists. No skill may be repeated within either routine. A successful routine will show consistency of height, proper technique and a minimum deviation from the center of the bed. The routine must end under control in an upright position. SYNCHRONIZED TRAMPOLINE
Synchronized trampoline demands the same athletic skill as individual trampoline, while adding the element of precision timing. Athletes perform two routines, a compulsory and a voluntary. Using two trampolines, two athletes perform identical 10-skill routines at the same time. In this most artistic event, each performs a mirror image of the other, doubling the visual beauty of the competition. The goal is to have both trampolinists in total synchronization of skills, height and form.

WHAT IS RG?
Modern rhythmic gymnastics began as a non-competitive sport in Eastern Europe at the beginning of this century and originally emerged as a criticism of the gymnastics of the time, which did not distinguish between gymnastics for men and for women. It may, however, be regarded as a movement specifically aimed at women's physical fitness, because it was developed on the basis of their biological and physiological characteristics. But over time, it has also had an impact on men's gymnastics by modernizing and reforming it. The sport consists of exercises of movement, which are arranged to music, combining dance and athletics with the aim of displaying an aesthetic harmony by control of body movement. It is developed from the natural movements of walking and running, coupled with grace, flexibility, endurance and self-expression. Rhythmic gymnastics is still primarily a European sport but has spread across the world. Rhythmic gymnastics can be seen as divided in two sections: a) Rhythmics , which consists of group exercises with natural and harmonic movements, carried out to music. It develops coordination, flexibility, strength and balance through movements that are reciprocal, alternating contraction and relaxation. It emphasizes fluidity and connections between moves, so that in lifting the arm the movement travels from the centre of the body all the way out to the fingertips. Apparatus, e.g. balls, hoops, ribbons, are used to develop coordination. It is from this branch that the Aesthetic Group Gymnastics ("AGG") is developed.

Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a sport involving the performance of sequences of movements requiring strength, flexibility, and kinaesthetic awareness. It developed from fitness exercises used by ancient Greek soldiers, as well incorporating cavalry skills for mounting and dismounting a horse, and circus performance skills. Modern gymnastics, as regulated by the FIG (Federation International de Gymnastique) incorporates six distinct disciplines: Of these disciplines, the two subdisciplines of artistic gymnastics are the best known, having been competed in every modern Summer Olympic Games The discipline of rhythmic gymnastics is competed only by women, and involves the performance of five separate routines with the use of five props (ball, ribbon, hoop, clubs, role) on a floor area, with a much greater emphasis on the aesthetic rather than the acrobatic. Rhythmic routines are scored out of a possible 30 points. Sports aerobics involves the performance of routines by individuals or pairs, emphasising strength, flexibility, and aerobic fitness rather than acrobatic or balance skills. Routines are peformed on a small floor area and last 90 seconds (? - check this), being judged out of a total of (check how many points is maximum).

http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/gym/gymhistory.html
OLYMPIC HISTORY Gymnastics has been an Olympic sport from ancient times and from the start of the modern Games in 1896. Until 1924, when gymnastics settled into a format not unlike the one we know today for artistic gymnasts, the sport also featured rope climbing, tumbling, club swinging, pole vault and even swimming among its disciplines. At Paris in 1924, men competed in individual and team events on each gym apparatus. The women followed in Amsterdam in 1928. Since then, the dominant force has been the Soviet Union, while the former Soviet bloc countries posed the biggest threat. China, too, with its diminutive talent and aptitude for harsh regimes of discipline, is a force to be reckoned with in gymnastic pursuits, though its dominance on the diving boards is not replicated so rigidly in the gymnasium. Two of the most famous gymnasts in history are both Russian. Larysa Latynina remains the most medalled Olympian in history, with 18 medals between 1956 and 1964, including nine gold, five silver and four bronze. Olga Korbut, the diminutive star of the 1972 Games stole more hearts than she won gold medals but her love affair with the media was one of the highlights of the Munich Games.

ANCIENT ORIGINS GYMNASTS BOUNCE INTO THE 21ST CENTURY
Gymnastics, one of those few sports that can claim a classical birth, is not what it was in ancient times. For a start, the athletes no longer perform naked as they did at the Olympiad of old, "gymnos" being the Greek word for "naked". Secondly, to go by monosyllabic comments made at post-victory press conferences, there appears to be little left to remind us of the original purpose of the sport; the Greeks believed that symmetry of mind and body was possible only when the physical was balanced by the intellectual. Then there's the fact that trampolining will bounce the sport into the 21st century in Sydney. The gymnasium of ancient Greece, where the sport was born, was a place of cultural, artistic, musical and philosophical well-being, and gymnastics was an activity advocated by various luminaries, including Plato, Aristotle and Homer, though the Greeks were not alone in the gym in those early days. The sport was also used for training soldiers in China, India and Persia.
