ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS HISTORY
Photo Volker Minkus : Jordan Jovtchev (BUL)
Origin of Artistic Gymnastics
Gymnastics is one of the oldest Olympic sports, and was first practised at the ancient Olympic Games when the competitors performed a variety of events that could loosely be termed "gymnastics". These included wrestling and vaulting over bulls, according to illustrations seen on ancient clay pots. In fact, the name "gymnastics" is derived from the ancient Greek word "gumnos" which literally translated means naked. Because of this, women were excluded from the ancient Games, not just as competitors but also as spectators ! The sport in its modern form first evolved during the 19th century, when two styles of gymnastics were in conflict : the Swedish system (mainly freestyle group exercises) and the German system (using apparatus). Large open air gymnasiums began to appear in Europe during the 19th century, resembling adventure playgrounds where gentlemen could impress their lady friends with a spot of rope-climbing. It was regarded as a great form of discipline by the army, and many military terms still exist today, such as "marching on" ans "saluting the judges". The international governing body for gymnastics, the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) was founded in 1881. There are currently 125 federations affiliated to the FIG.

Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History GYMNASTICS Gymnastics was one of nine sports on the program of the first modern Olympics, at Athens in 1896. There was team and individual competition on the horizontal bars and the parallel bars, with individual competition only on the pommel horse, rings, vault, and rope climbing. In 1900, there was only one event, the men's all-around, which included weightlifting, the pole vault, long jump, rope climb, and the combined long jump and high jump. The first world championships, held at Antwerp in 1903, included a hodge-podge of 26 events. Among them were compulsory exercises without apparatus, optional and compulsory exercises on apparatus, the high jump, running, and weightlifting. Until 1920, local organizers decided what event were to be on the Olympic program. The 1904 Olympics were held in St. Louis, and the gymnastics competition there probably offers a pretty good snapshot of the state of American gymnastics at that time. All of the current men's events, except the floor exercise, were on the St. Louis program. But the program also included club swinging, rope climbing, the gymnastics triathlon (parallel bars, high bars, and combined long horse and side horse vaults), and the athletic triathlon (long jump, shot put, and 100-yard dash).

Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS Although it's quite new as a competitive sport, rhythmic gymnastics is rooted in the very beginning of modern gymnastics. Specifically, it grew out of the Swedish system of free exercise developed in 1814 by Peter Henry Ling. Ling promoted "aesthetic gymnastics," in which students expressed their feelings and emotions through bodily movement. The idea was extended by Catherine E. Beecher, founder of the Western Female Institute in Ohio in 1837. In Beecher's gymnastics program, called "grace without dancing," young women exercised to music, moving from simple calisthenics to more strenuous activities. During the 1880s, Emil Dalcroze of Switzerland developed "eurhythmics," a form of physical training for musicians and dancers, and George Demeny of France created various exercises to music that were designed to promote grace of movement, muscular flexibility, and good posture. All of those strains were combined, around 1900, into the Swedish school of rhythmic gymnastics, which later added more dance elements from Finland. About the same time, Ernest Idla of Estonia established a degree of difficulty for each movement.

    TRI STAR GYMNASTIC CLUB HISTORY
Tri Star Gymnastic Club was formed in 1988 and has its origins in three Central Auckland gymnastic clubs that were established in the 1950's: St Mary’s, Mt Roskill and Onehunga Gymnastic Clubs.
Part of the current gymsport complex was the American Services gym built during the Second World War and initially located in Cornwall Park.
In 1965, the American Services gym building was moved to its current site, having been donated by the Mayor, Mr Keith Hay.
The facility was known as the Mt Roskill Gym and Youth Centre, and was used for gymnastics, weight lifting, judo, Maori cultural groups and community house classes.
In late 1985, a proposal was put to Auckland City to construct a new building, sited adjacent to the existing gym. The facility was completed in 1987, and the three independent clubs merged to become Tri Star Gymnastic Club Inc. in March 1988. The new club was granted a land lease covering both buildings for 66 years.
The demand for mat based sports and recreational space in both buildings now exceeds their capacity, and fundraising is currently in progress to build a new Regional Gymsport Centre on the existing site at Keith Hay Park, Mt Roskill, by demolishing the old American Services gym and building a new and larger facility in its place.
