Congratulations to all of the competitors at the Rhythmic National Championships and especially to our Senior and Junior National Champions, Natalie Lacuesta and Heilie Isaacs. It was an excellent competition at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Six groups entered this Championships with the group from AIRGC named as Senior Champions and Illinois Rhythmics group named as Junior Champions. Earlier this spring, the group from Rhythmflex Gymnastics, coached by Catherine Yakhimovich, was awarded the right at the Trials to represent the United States at the Group World Gymnastics Championships in Seville, Spain. This was the first time the United States has sent a club-based group to a World Championships. The group did a very nice job representing us and really showed how far we are coming with the development of group rhythmic gymnastics in our country. The Men's National Team spent a week training at China's National Training Institute in Beijing. This was the first time any foreign team has been permitted to train at this Center. The friendship we have developed with the Chinese Gymnastics Association through the International Team Championships and the Visa American Cup helped to secure this prestigious invitation for the Team. The men gained a lot from training with the World Champions, ate scorpions and had a thoroughly wonderful time with their Chinese hosts! Thanks to all the clubs and gymnasts who, over the years, have helped host the Chinese teams in the United States.

Gymnastics History Gymanstics, is such a fun sport, has been around for over 2000 years but gymnastics as a competitive sport has been around for100 years. The gymnastics soprt was conducted by various clubs and ethnic groups such as the Turvereins and Sok ols. While it was slow-growing in the sport area, it was fast-growing sport in the Turvereins and Sokols. In 1830s, the sport of gymnastics was introduced to United States and its school systems by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Franci s Lieber. In 1881 the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed, later was renamed to Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation. The Amature Athletic Union (AAU) was formed in United States in 1883. Along with other amature spots in United States, this organization took over the control of the gymnastics in U.S. Various "championships" started to develop by various clubs and organizations at about the same time during 1880s. The first large-scale competition was the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. There Germany have been the dominant team by almost sweeping every medal.
Five countries have participapted in this event. Men's competitions included horizontal bar, parall el bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault.

    Olympic History: Gymnastics
One of the oldest sports in the Olympics, gymnastics began in ancient Greece more than 2000 years ago. Men gathered at "gymnasiums" the center of activity for the time not only practice the sport, but also to debate about art, literature and philosophy. The major focus of gymnastics focused on finding symmetry between the mind and body by pairing physical exercise with intellectual activity Plato, Aristotle and Homer advocated strengthening qualities of gymnastic activity. Christians of the time considered gymnastics Satanic because of its focus on the body gymnasts performed in the nude at the all-male ancient Games of Olympia. After financial corruption led to the banning of gymnastics in 393 A.D., the sport did not reappear in the public arena until the 16th century. "Artistic" gymnastics came to be in the early 1800s, distinguishing free-flowing styles from the techniques used by the military.

We look at the early sources of gymnastics, and survey the movement up to the Medieval Times. Modern gymnastics is picked up on the next link. Finally we come to American Gymnastics. We hope this information will be a useful resource for your research.
    In The Beginning
There is no knowledge available about the earliest times of man's acrobatic efforts. There is no doubt, however, that people performed individual tumbling movements, group acrobatics and swing from branches early in their history.
    The Egyptians and Chinese
Stone cuttings show that people were building human pyramids (along with stone pyramids!) and balancing stunts in Egypt as early as 2100 BC. Circus like acrobatics was performed in ancient Egypt. In the 2nd century BC, men and women of Minoan Crete developed the art of bull leaping. In bull leaping the performer would run toward a charging bull, grab its horns, and, upon being tossed into the air, execute various midair stunts before landing on the bull's back and dismount with a flip. The Chinese have probably performed such stunts even before this time.
    The Greeks
In Ancient Greece, three distinct programs of gymnastic exercise were developed:

    EARLY GYMNASTICS IN AMERICA 1800’s
In the 1800’s, American usage of the word gymnastics seems to be the all-inclusive word for the early physical training that went on in this country. There are a number of terms used in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s to define physical training -since there wasn’t much in the line of Physical Education in the schools. Some of the terms include: Light Gymnastics - which refers to the use of dumbbells, wands and clubs. Heavy Gymnastics - which was the sport of men’s training with the bigger apparatus. Physical Culture - again, this word seems to be interchangeable with what we consider today’s physical education. Calisthenics: stretching and static movements.
It is interesting trying to sort it all out. Usually, the term gymnastics included a combination light and heavy gymnastics, with calisthenics, military drills, running, some track events, and game playing.
    THE GERMAN INFLUENCE
Turnverein : These were German Gymnastics Societies that were first formed in Germany during the early 1800’s. They were a sports and political organization.

by Mike Morrison Always one of the most popular summer Olympic sports, gymnastics has given us some of our most memorable moments and personalities in recent Olympic history.
In , Russia's Olga Korbut helped take our minds of the horrors going on in Munich and in Vietnam. In , Romania's Nadia Comaneci recorded the first perfect score in Olympic gymnastics history, then proceeded to record six more for good measure. In , American Mary Lou Retton dazzled us with her smile and spunk, and in , it was the "Magnificent Seven" and Kerri Strug's gutsy vault that ensured the gold for the United States.

Olga Korbut of the Soviet Union inspired thousands of girls to take up gymnastics after she won two gold medals and one silver medal in the 1972 Olympics. She was later named Female Athlete of the Year. In the 1976 Olympics Nadia Comaneci of Romania became the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect 10.0. She did this in the floor exercise. She went on to record six more perfect scores during those olympics. In 1984 16-year-old Mary Lou Retton of West Virginia became the youngest gymnast to win a gold medal. Her perfect performance on the vault earned her the Olympic gold medal in the Women's All-Around event. Shannon Miller is now the most decorated female American gymnast of all time.
