A history of political alliances in Guyana: 1953-1997
    guyana
caribbean politics .com By Hazel Woolford - Guyana Chronicle April 30th. 2000 This article seeks to examine the status of political alliances in Guyana, during the second half of the twentieth century. It will be noted, that there was no scope for independents to contest elections, after 1953, and that the major political parties, only opted for alliances when their power appeared threatened, or when they were in the opposition. In 1951, the Waddington Constitution provided for universal adult suffrage in British Guiana. This historic step in our political history, meant that all Guyanese who were 21 years old and over, had the opportunity to vote, at the 1953 General Election. It was this election which sharply etched Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham in Guiana's political landscape. Jagan had successfully contested in the 1947 elections as an Independent candidate. But the 1953 general election was different. Jagan had become leader of the PPP, and the chairman was Forbes Burnham. While Burnham had not previously contested for a seat in the Legislative Assembly, he had participated in the municipal elections. Burnham had been elected a member of the Georgetown Town Council in 1952. Hence, he had a taste of the cut and thrust of politics.

Nevertheless, the fact remains that the spirit of Guyana is a black-African one. Thayer Watkins The Political and Economic History of Guyana Guyana is an interesting and significant case. It is interesting because of the unexpected ethnic mix of the the population. Slightly over 50 percent of the population is descended from East Indian migrants. About 40 percent are descendants of African slave brought to work the sugar plantations. The rest is an odd assortment of Amerindians and Europeans. Guyana is a significant case because its socialist government destroyed the ecoomy with bad policies. That socialist government, led by Linden Forbes Burnham, was considered the lesser evil to the Marxist-Leninist party led by Cheddi Jagan and his wife Janet. After Burnham unexpectedly died while being operated on by Cuban surgeons the Jagans did come to power in Guyana but by that time even Marxist-Leninists were advocating an abandonment of socialism.
    The History of Guyana
In prehistoric times the Arawak Amerindians migrated from what is now Brazil into what is Guyana and the north coast region of South America. They continued on into the islands of the Caribbean. The Arawak were relatively peaceful farmers who also fished and hunted. Not long before European contact another more warlike tribe from Brazil, the Caribs, invaded the area populated by the Arawaks, defeating and decimating them. And then came another warlike people, the Europeans, who defeated the Caribs. The Spanish made early sightings of the north coast of South America but showed little interest in it because there was little indication of there being values there. The area later became known as the Guianas, an Amerindian word meaning

Indian groups include the Warao (Warrau), Arawak, Carib, Wapisiana (Wapishana), Arecuna, the mixed “Spanish Arawak” of the Moruka River, and many more in the forest areas. The Makusí (Macussí or Macushí) are the most prominent of the savanna peoples. Sizable concentrations of Amerindians inhabit the far west along the border with Venezuela and Brazil. They are rarely seen in the populated coastal areas, although a few have interbred with blacks and East Indians. Since 1970, traditional Amerindian lands near the international borders have come under government control, although Amerindians continue to hold village lands informally throughout Guyana's interior.

Guyana is a beautiful place to live but her history and recent events, with the PNC Party and the Leadership of the Guyana Public Service Union have lead to many human rights violations. After slavery was abolished in 1838 the British Colonizers made their first importation of indentured labourers, with the steamships SS Whitby and Hesperus , May 5, 1838 from Calcutta. My grandmother, Somwaria , came in the SS 850 BR in 1902. My grandfather, Edu, came in the SS Sutley in 1916. As a second generation Indian in Guyana, I like to read books on India and Indian History. The stories of the Taj Mahal and Subash Chandra Bose's struggle to free India from British Colonialism have been of particular interest to me. In addition, I have read the History of East Indians in British Guiana by Dwarka Nauth, numerous times When I was a child, my grandfather described to me the beauty of the India that he saw on his journey by train after leaving his village in Uttar Pradesh. He passed through beautiful cities like Agra (where theTaj Mahal was built), Lucknow and Allahabad, to Calcutta in the state of Bengal. It was from Calcutta he was shipped to British Guiana. Viewing Indian movies in Guyana further strengthened my love for Mother India , and made me resolve to one day visit her. I fulfilled that resolution by studying in India and witnessed myself, the splendor of India my grandfather described to me.

The Amerindians migrate to, and inhabit South America. The legend of the Empire Of Eldorado is born. The earliest account of the territory of Guiana is made in a dispatch to the Royal Council of Spain in which the Governor of Trinidad, Antonio de Berreo, describes his journey down the Oronoco and his attempt to explore Guiana. Sir Robert Dudley makes inquiries about the rumoured Empire of El Dorado  when his ship puts in to Trinidad. A small boat is sent to investigate and its crew returns to say that the natives (Amerindians)had told them of gold-mines so rich that the people of the country powdered themselves with gold dust. 'And farre beyond them', they said, 'a great towne called El Dorado, with many other things.' The Dutch make their first voyage to Guiana. Dutch West India Company receives a charter for the Essequibo. Slaves arrive in the colonies from Africa. A small Dutch settlement is established on the Pomeroon River. War breaks out between England and Holland.
