History
Guyana was first populated by the indigenous peoples of the region the Amerindians. This term includes nine tribes - Akawaios, Arawaks, Arecunas, Caribs , Macusis, Patamonas, Wai-wais, Wapisianas and Warraus.
In 1615 the Dutch befriended the Amerindians and settled in Guiana. They began building cotton and sugar plantations on the coast and brought slaves from West Africa to work on these plantations. During this period, the French and British were also setting up cotton and sugar plantations in other parts of the country and using slaves as labor.
As the British empire began to expand around the world in the late 1700's, so did their territory in Guiana. In 1814, the colonies of Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice were ceded to Britain, and later in 1831 these colonies merged and became British Guiana.
With the abolishment of slavery in 1834, the British had to turn to other sources for labor and so they began to bring indentured labourers from India, Portugal, Germany and China to work on their plantations.
On May 26, 1966 British Guiana gained its independent from the Britian and changed its name to Guyana which was derived from an Amerindian word meaning Land of Many Waters. Four years later, on February 23, 1970 Guyana was proclaimed the Co-operative Republic of Guyana within the British Commonwealth of Nations.

A Concept Iwokrama International Centre has its origins in an offer made in 1989 by then President of Guyana, Mr. Desmond Hoyte, on the occasion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malaysia. The overall concept, including the identification of the forest site, was developed jointly by a Guyanese inter-agency team headed by the Guyana Natural Resources Agency, and by a Commonwealth Group of Experts headed by the eminent Indian Scientist, Dr. Swaminathan. The Report was presented on June 5th, 1990 to mark World Environment Day. Over the next few years, guidelines for the management of the site were outlined by Guyanese and international consultants. In 1993, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) signed an agreement to grant US$3 million as seed funding to assist with the development of the Programme. By 1994, a functional field station was established in the Iwokrama Forest to enable research and training. An Agreement At the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in November 1995, President Cheddi Jagan, and Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, signed the Agreement which defines the objectives, functions, and organisation of Iwokrama. This Agreement forms part of the enabling legislation tabled in Parliament in late December 1995.

In the early 17th cent. the Dutch established settlements about the Essequibo River, and England and France also founded colonies in the Guiana region. By the Treaty of Breda (1667) the Dutch gained all the English colonies in Guiana. Sugar soon emerged as the most important plantation crop. Sugar was first grown in colonial Guyana in 1658 but was not produced on a large scale until the late 1700s, about 100 years later than in the rest of the Caribbean region. Because Guyana's plantation owners entered the sugar industry late, they were able to import relatively advanced equipment for milling sugarcane. This investment in advanced equipment gave the local sugar industry a firm foundation and made it the leading sector of the local economy. By 1800 there were an estimated 380 sugar estates along the coast. In the 1990s, almost two centuries later, the population was still concentrated on the same coastal strip of land, and sugar was still one of the nation's two most valuable products. Guyana's distinct ethnic makeup can be traced to conditions that prevailed during the colonial period. To supply the labor required for sugar cultivation, plantation owners at first imported slaves from West Africa. (The indigenous Amerindian population of Guyana was small and lived mostly in the impenetrable interior.) Thousands of slaves were imported each year as plantations expanded; more than 100,000 slaves worked in the colony by 1830. The racial and ethnic divisions that arose out of the two great waves of immigration into Guyana in the colonial period had a profound effect on the country. The divisions between Afro-Guyanese and Indo-Guyanese persisted into the modern period, in both economic and political terms. In the early 1990s, most IndoGuyanese were still employed in agriculture, growing sugar and rice, while the majority of Afro-Guyanese lived in Guyana's few urban areas..

Guyana Table of Contents
THE EARLY YEARS
The first humans to reach Guyana belonged to the group of peoples that crossed into North America from Asia perhaps as much as 35,000 years ago. These first inhabitants were nomads who slowly spread south into Central America and South America. Although great civilizations later arose in the Americas, the structure of Amerindian society in the Guianas remained relatively simple. At the time of Christopher Columbus's voyages, Guyana's inhabitants were divided into two groups, the Arawak along the coast and the Carib in the interior. One of the legacies of the indigenous peoples was the word Guiana, often used to describe the region encompassing modern Guyana as well as Suriname (former Dutch Guiana) and French Guiana. The word, which means ""land of waters,"" is highly appropriate, considering the area's multitude of rivers and streams. Guyana Table of Contents Source: U.S. Library of Congress

  • Robbstown
  • Cummingsburg
  • Kingston
  • Werk-en-Rust
Under the English administration, the town was controlled by a Board of Police. However with the abolition of slavery in 1834, the powers of the Board of Police proved unequal to the new conditions and on 1st March, 1837, an Ordinance was passed to establish a Mayor and Town Council. Under the Municipal and District Councils Act Chapter 28:01, Greater Georgetown came into being on 29th April, 1970. This Act extended the City from 2.5 square miles to 15 square miles, covering Cummings Lodge on the East Coast to Agricola on the East Bank Demerara. Click To Go Back

Did The First Lady Deny Guyana's History ?
By Govind Dhaya
The June 22, Desi Talk (American Indian publication) article entitled "Guyana Has No Racial Problem: First Lady Uma Jagdeo," came simultaneously as a shock, an invalidation of Guyana's racial history but certainly as no surprise!
"Guyana does not have the race problem. We don't have a race problem,'" says Ravi Adhikari, of Desi Talk, during a casual chat with Matie Singh. "This was an exclusive interview for Desi Talk, so I can not give you a copy of the tape but it is available," Adhikari said, when asked if this paper could request a copy of the interview tape. Those were, indeed, the words of the First Lady, and if they are a measure of her boldness, that certainly is in short supply of it, as will be demonstrated in the account that follows.
To begin with, let us take a brief look at the telling events leading up to the incredible predicament the "First Lady" of Guyana has managed to get her self into: "She said that '"Guyana does not have the race problem.
First, she arrived in New York some time back in April 2001, without giving any formal advanced notice to the Guyana Consulate so that a proper reception with all due protocol could be arranged. Hence, she went around without the protection of a police escort or official bodyguard.

Guyana's coast was discovered by Columbus in 1498 on his 3rd voyage. Legend had it that the mythical kingdom EL DORADO, rich of gold, was hidden in it's jungle.
El Dorado did not materialize. The Dutch established settlements on the coast of Guyana : NIEUW NICKERIE on the Corantijn river in 1613, ESSEQUIBO 1616, BERBICE 1627. A Dutch settlement at the Corantijn River (1613) in modern Suriname was destroyed by the Spanish the year after. When the WIC (Dutch United West Indian Company) was founded in 1621, Essequibo became one of it's first colonial assets. Sugar cane was introduced in 1658 and soon became the primary export product. Slaves were introduced from Africa to work the sugar plantations.
English settlers settled in PARAMARIBO, SURINAME when Lord F. Willoughby sent an expedition to Suriname from Barbados in 1650. During the SECOND ANGLO-DUTCH WAR (1665-1667), ABRAHAM CRIJNSSEN occupied the English settlement. When, during the negotiations leading to the TREATY OF BREDA 1667, the English side offered to return New Netherlands (modern New York) in return for Suriname, the Dutch side declined. Suriname, with it's sugar plantations, promised higher profits than New Amsterdam (future New York). Suriname became possession of Zeeland, the province which had dispatched Crijnssen; in 1683, it sold the colony to the WIC for Hfl 260,000. The settlements were treated as distinct colonies.
In 1741, a new settlement, DEMERARA, was established. In 1763, a major slave rebellion broke out, headed by CUFFY. It could only be suppressed by bringing in troops.
