History of the Economy - Postindependence
Guyana achieved political independence in 1966, but economic independence did not immediately follow. Most decisions affecting the economy continued to be made abroad because foreign companies owned most of the agricultural and mining enterprises. Two British companies, Booker McConnell and Jessel Securities, controlled the largest sugar estates and exerted a great deal of influence on the nation. In the early 1970s, the Booker McConnell company alone accounted for almost one-third of Guyana's gross national product (GNP). The company produced 85 percent of Guyana's sugar, employed 13 percent of the work force, and took in 35 percent of the country's foreign exchange earnings. Two other foreign companies dominated the mining sector: the Demerara Bauxite Company (Demba), a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan); and the Reynolds Bauxite Company, a subsidiary of the Reynolds Metals Company of the United States. Together these firms accounted for 45 percent of the nation's foreign exchange earnings. Foreign companies also controlled the major banks. According to critics of the country's economic system, foreign companies were satisfied with the existing arrangements and had no incentive to develop the local economies. In short, foreign control was stifling regional aspirations. Many people in Caribbean countries, particularly those with left-leaning political sympathies, called for government control of the economies.

[edit this] This is no World66 image. It was found using an Internet search. more.. [Change image] [Upload image] Before the arrival of Europeans the region was inhabited by both Carib and Arawak tribes who named it Guiana which means land of waters. The Dutch settled in Guyana in the late 16th century but their control ended when the British became the de facto rulers in 1796. In 1815 the colonies of Essequibo Demerara and Berbice were officially ceded to Great Britain at the Congress of Vienna and in 1831 were consolidated as British Guiana. Following the abolition of slavery in 1834 thousands of indentured laborers were brought to Guyana to replace the slaves on the sugar cane plantations primarily from India but also from Portugal and China. The British stopped the practice in 1917. Many of the Afro-Guyanese former slaves moved to the towns and became the majority urban population whereas the Indo-Guyanese remained predominantly rural. A scheme in 1862 to bring black workers from the United States was unsuccessful. The small Amerindian population lives in the country's interior. The people drawn from these diverse origins have coexisted peacefully for the most part. Slave revolts such as the one in 1763 led by Guyana's national hero Cuffy demonstrated the desire for basic rights but also a willingness to compromise. Politically inspired racial disturbances between East Indians and blacks erupted in 1962-64. However the basically conservative and cooperative nature of Guyanese society contributed to a cooling of racial tensions.

GUYANA'S HISTORY The earliest account of the territory of Guiana is made in a dispatch to the Royal Council of Spain in which the Governor of Trinidad, Antonio de Berreo, describes his journey down the Oronoco and his attempt to explore Guiana. Sir Robert Dudley makes inquiries about the rumoured Empire of El Dorado when his ship puts in to Trinidad. A small boat is sent to investigate and its crew returns to say that the natives (Amerindians)had told them of gold-mines so rich that the people of the country powdered themselves with gold dust. 'And farre beyond them', they said, 'a great towne called El Dorado, with many other things.' The Dutch make their first voyage to Guiana. Dutch West India Company receives a charter for the Essequibo. Slaves arrive in the colonies from Africa. A small Dutch settlement is established on the Pomeroon River. War breaks out between England and Holland. The Berbice Slave Rebellion breaks out (at the time when Berbice is a separate Dutch colony). It begins on one estate, but soon spreads to others along the Berbice River. The revolt is the result of the cruelty with which the Dutch plantation owners have been treating their slaves, and it is led by a male slave called Coffy. The few hundred white settlers are soon overwhelmed, and the uprising will only be put down after the arrival of warships and with the help of troops from as far away as Barbados.

Natural History
Sept, 1998 by Mark Jacobson
Can an impoverished country in South America survive a gold-mining boom? Four hundred seventy years ago, toiling in the dank, semi-illicit laboratories of Basel and Strasbourg, Paracelsus (real name, Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim), the most canny and bombastic of alchemists, sought a quintessential agent that would transmute base metals into gold. This catalyst, often called the philosophers' stone, was accorded properties that approached the divine. If Paracelsus could be transported through time and space to the steaming jungles of present-day Guyana, he could now stand on a catwalk at Omaione of the largest open-pit gold mines in South Americaand peer into a twenty-five-foot-high, ten-thousand-gallon vat to see the roiling of a whole other kind of alchemy. At Omai, liquid sodium cyanide is the "quintessential" catalyst in the leaching process that separates gold ore from contiguous, worthless base deposits. One of the deadliest poisons known to manor possibly to Godcyanide is no philosophers' stone, but it works a heck of a lot better. Here, where operations go on around the clock, close to 1,000 ounces of gold are extracted every day.

HISTORY OF MY PEOPLE
The Afghan Muslims of Guyana
by Raymond Chickrie
rchickrie@hotmail.com
Updated September 8th. 2001 Little is known about the Afghan Muslims of Guyana, in fact, some maybe amazed to learn that Afghans made their way to Guyana among the Indian Muslims. Many people of Afghan origin (Pathan) also migrated to Suriname. When Indian indentured laborers began arriving in Guyana in 1838, India was already conquered and assimilated by Persians, Central Asian Turks, Arabs, Afghans, Greeks, Hazaras, Baluchis, among other Muslim clans who settled in India's large cities. The dominant minority, the Muslims settled in large cities such as Ahmadabad, Allahabad, Delhi, Karachi, Lahore, Bihar, Ghazipur, Lucknow, and Hyderabad. These exotic people found great economic opportunities in India and they were encouraged to migrate to the Metropolis by the Mughal Emperors. Naturally, the strong and fierce Afghans mostly from the Pathan clan settled in the northern plains of India. The modern districts of Bareilly, Muradabad and Badaun had strong Afghan Township where over 9,000 Afghans settled. Some Pathans migrated from Rohilkhand. Bareilly as a ruined city crowded with unemployed, restless Rohilla Pathans. Many urban cities in Uttar Pradesh were experiencing economic stagnation and poverty. Naturally, this led to heavy migration overseas. Immigration records indicate that the majority of Muslims who migrated to Guyana and Suriname came from the urban centres of Uttar Pradesh: Agra, Ahllahbad, Bahraich Basti, Fyzabad, Gonda, Gorakpur, Ghazipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Muradabad, Rae-Bareilly, Rampur, and Sultanpur. Small batches also came from Karachi in Sind, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi in the Punjab, Hyderabad, in the Deccan, Srinagar in Kashmir, and Peshawar and Mardan in the Northwest Frontier (Afghan areas). Immigration certificates reveals major details of Muslim migrants.
