The expedition began in earnest at Rockstone, a tiny outpost hacked out of the rain forest on the Essequibo River. As we approached the landing on a jungle-lined dirt road, scattering clouds of yellow and chartreuse butterflies, we saw a group of more than a dozen women and children, dressed in long skirts and colorful blouses. They piled into an old wooden boat and, eight dugout canoes in tow, headed upstream, where they would spend two days catching piranha, catfish, arawana, and angelfish for the international aquarium trade. The next morning our team of eight (six Americans, an Englishman, and a Guyanese) got into a small motorboat and explored a canal off the Essequibo. Thick white clouds drifted across the sky, occasionally blocking a sun so hot that the mere act of sitting induced a shirt-soaking sweat. Red and green kingfishers shot in front of our wooden boat. Iridescent hummingbirds hovered over the cove. As we drifted into a fetid lagoon clogged with dead trees, a snake skittered across the water. Armbruster pronounced conditions perfect. He was the first over the side. GENERAL INFORMATION GEOGRAPHY Located on the Northern coast of South America, and bordered by Venezuela on the West, Suriname on the East, and Brazil on the South, Guyana has a land area slightly smaller than Idaho. Originally called British Guyana, it received its independence from the UK in 1966. Its terrain is mostly rolling highlands, with a low coastal plain, and a savannah in the South. The many rivers contain frequent water falls, making water navigation almost impossible except for short distances. Its climate is tropical, hot and humid, with two rainy seasons (May to mid-August, mid-November to mid-January). Of its total land mass, 83% is forest and woodland. Though 3% of its land is arable, none is dedicated to permanent crops. Mining communities scattered throughout the jungle mine bauxite, gold, diamonds and hardwood timbers. PEOPLE Guyana s total population is 723,774. Of its population 62% lie between the ages of 15 to 64, with only 5% over the age of 65. In spite of the fact that its birth rate of 19.41 births per 1,000 is higher than its death rate of 7.34 deaths per 1,000, it has a negative population growth of -0.81%. This is explained by the fact that the net migration rate is negative at -20.19 migrants/1,000 population (1995 estimate). The infant mortality rate is: 47.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. Ethnically diverse, Guyana has an East Indian population of 51%, black and mixed 43%, Amerindian 4%, European and Chinese 2%. Diversity of religions also is a characteristic with its population being Christian 57%, Hindu 33%, Muslim 9%, and other 1% . Its official language is English, but Amerindian dialects are spoken throughout the interior. Of those age 15 and over, 96% have received some type of education.

Bernard's new geography text launched-to be used in schools Stabroek News September 15, 1999 A new geography text specifically for the use of Guyana's primary and secondary schools was launched on Monday afternoon by Universal Bookstore at the Georgetown Club. The book, titled A New Geography of Guyana, is a comprehensive study of the physical and human aspects of the Guyanese landscape, with topics ranging from climate to resources to demography to tourism and transport. Author Deryck Bernard is an experienced Guyanese educator and was a minister of education in the PNC government. At present, he is a senior lecturer attached to the University of Guyana (UG). Bernard commented on the preparation that went into making the project a success, labelling it "not a lot of work but a labour of love." He dedicated the new work to the late Lester Cummings, who was the author of the first Geography of Guyana, and a shining example to him. Bernard also praised his family, UG staffers and members of the Geography Department, who, he stated, helped in no small measure to enable completion of the project. Similar sentiments were expressed about Ovid and Selina Holder, owners of Universal Bookstore, who encouraged him every step of the way. Speaking to Stabroek News afterwards, the author said that his book was the only up-to-date Geography text in the system which provided recent research material including advice to teachers and students on the methodology of fieldwork. As such, he views it as a necessary tool for the school programme.
