It is during the month of September, that Amerindian Heritage Month is observed and Amerindian culture is brought to the forefront and given significant recognition. This is not to say, however, that Government does not focus attention on the development of Amerindians. There are noticeable developments in every Amerindian community and in every conceivable sector within these communities.
While there is still a lot of work to be done for Amerindians, many Amerindians recognize that the Government is doing its best with the limited funds available. But even as Government seeks to promote sectoral developments in Amerindian communities it also recognizes and promotes Amerindian cultural practices. An entire month is designated specially to demonstrate and focus on Amerindian activities. Most of these activities are culturally based.
They showcase, among other things, Amerindian dishes, dress, dances and art and craft. Amerindian Heritage Month has now become part of the national calendar of events and so Guyanese look forward, especially to this month to acquire their treasured pieces of art and craft intricately produced by specialized Amerindian techniques.

Guyana gives splendid performance at CARIFESTA VIII
Georgetown, GINA, September 1, 2003
Today the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport held a media briefing at the National Cultural Centre to update the media on Guyana's performance at the Caribbean Festival of Arts.
Keith Booker Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport said Guyana was well represented at the Festival.
This Festival was first held in Guyana in 1972.
The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Gail Teixeira earlier disclosed that participants for CARIFESTA VIII would have to be multi-faceted to ensure that the group representing the country give an excellent performance.
According to Raymon Cummings, Director of Research and Documentation at the Ministry and the person in charge of the performing arts for CARIFESTA this foresight by the Minister equipped the team with an advantage over other countries.
Guyana was able to make four presentations over the five days of the event.

President's Speeches O.P Statements Cabinet Press Briefing Notes ... Media Advisory Government has no regrets about supporting the motion that requested Arrival Day on May 5 be approved as a national holiday by the National Assembly.
This is according to President Bharrat Jagdeo last evening. He was at the time delivering remarks at the Indian Arrival Committee Cultural Mela and Family Fun Day attended by thousands, at the National Park yesterday.
The Head of State maintained that the declaration of Arrival Day as a holiday is not a signal from Government that East Indians are the most important group in Guyana.
May is the month when most immigrants came to Guyana as Indentured labourers. The East Indians came on May 5, 1838 and was the largest group.
At first the idea was mooted to have an Arrival/Indenturedship Day in Guyana.
In June of 2003, the Special Select Committee met to select representatives to the body. The body constituted the Minister of Home Affairs (Chairman,) Dr. Dale Bisnauth, Mrs. Indranie Chandarpal, Ms. Shirley Edwards, Mr. Zulfikar Mustapha, Mr. Deryck Bernard, Ms. Amna Ally, Dr. George Norton, and Mr. Ravindra Dev.
Work began in December 2003 and the Committee met on several occasions thereafter. The Special Select Committee agreed to garner public opinion about including May 5 and May 26 Arrival Day and Independence Day as public holidays.

Chief Rock represents First Nations culture in Guyana
On September 13, 2002, Canadian First Nations performer Sino General arrived in Georgetown, Guyana to perform for Amerindian Heritage month. Invited as a special guest, this Native American Music Award nominee from the Six Nations Reserve, Ontario, demonstrated the dynamism of Aboriginal Canadian performing arts to the Guyanese people. In Canada, Sino General spends much of his time sharing his deep knowledge of First Nations cultural traditions with school groups across the country. During his visit, he had the opportunity to carry out these activities in Guyana, speaking school audiences and giving demonstrations of pow-wow dancing. His tour extended from urban schools in the Georgetown area to the remotest regions near the Brazilian and Venezuelan borders. Sino General also has a rap career as Chief Rock. For Chief Rock music and video clips, see his website: www.chiefrockmusic.com

Guyana, set in a natural tropical wilderness, is a splendid combination of the Caribbean and South America, with fascinating touches of a sometimes turbulent past. On the northeast corner of the South American continent, Guyana stretches from its 270 mile long Atlantic coastline into dense equatorial forest and the broad Savannah of the Rupununi. Dominated by mighty rivers which provide essential highways into the rainforest and jungles of the interior, where man has made little impact, Guyana is waiting to be explored. The picturesque capital and port of Georgetown , with its modern hotels and traditional wooden buildings lining broad boulevards, stands guard over the Demerara River. The striking architecture reminds us of its strong 18th and 19th century Dutch and British history and is a fascinating introduction to the land of Guyana. Don't miss St. George's Cathedral , reputed to be the world's tallest wooden building. Setting out to explore the natural beauty of the interior by boat, light aircraft or 4 x 4, you encounter the extraordinary natural heritage of Guyana spreading out like a tropical carpet. See jaguar roaming freely in the rainforest and listen to the unearthly cry of howler monkeys echoing through the trees. To discover the beauty of Guyana is to glimpse the flashes of scarlet, yellow and blue as macaws fly like arrows across a clearing in the forest canopy, and toucans and the awesome Harpy Eagle swoop through the trees. These are a few of the more than 700 species of birds that are indigenous to Guyana.

GUYANA, IRAN AND THE OIC
by Raymond Chickrie

Posted September 2003 The 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran marked a new beginning of Guyana/Iranian relationship. During the regime of the Reza Shah Phalavi of Iran, the two countries did not establish diplomatic relationship. But after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Guyana and Iran established diplomatic relationship in the 80's and, through various multilateral organizations such as the UN, the Group of 77, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the OIC, has cooperated on various issues. Iran appoints a non-resident ambassador to Guyana, who is based in Caracas. With the Islamic Republic severing ties with Israel and South Africa in 1979, relationship with Guyana improved tremendously. Reza Shah's close relationship with Israel and South Africa severely damaged its relationship with developing nations. Iran was also isolated by Arab Governments across the Middle East; however, relationship with Iran took a quantum leap after the 1979 Revolution. Guyana and Iran among other developing nations fought against the "racist" regimes in Israel and South Africa. Guyana like Iran at the UN, voted for the famous General Assembly Resolution branding "Zionism as racism." Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Iranian Foreign Minister, Mr. Ali Akbar Velayati held a bilateral meeting in Colombia on 18th of October 1995, during the Non- Aligned Summit. Jagan said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has made significant gains in many areas and we are interested in having close cooperation with Iran at international forums." (Iranian News Agency). Dr. Jagan extended an invitation to the Iranian Foreign Minister to visit Georgetown.
