Indian groups include the Warao (Warrau), Arawak, Carib, Wapisiana (Wapishana), Arecuna, the mixed “Spanish Arawak” of the Moruka River, and many more in the forest areas. The Makusí (Macussí or Macushí) are the most prominent of the savanna peoples. Sizable concentrations of Amerindians inhabit the far west along the border with Venezuela and Brazil. They are rarely seen in the populated coastal areas, although a few have interbred with blacks and East Indians. Since 1970, traditional Amerindian lands near the international borders have come under government control, although Amerindians continue to hold village lands informally throughout Guyana's interior.

Welcome to the Caribbean Home Page Welcome WTTC News Business ... Sports Caribbean Culture I. Culture Defined: Time and space are viewed through the lenses of history and geography. The human coefficient (the individual, group, community, nationality) constructs the unfolding of time, which offers the perspective through which culture is interpreted.
Culture is often hard to objectively define in study but can be simplified as the body of people's expressions, values, meanings and artifacts that anchor peoples' identity. Caribbean culture is identifiably linked to the approaches to survival taken by her peoples. This is the definition of 'livity' - the Rastafari lexicon offering to explain how people live, ideas that inform livelihood, responses to them, and ultimately how this impacts others. In respect of the Caribbean, culture can be viewed as a continuous inspiration of 'livity', organic and inorganic materials, organized around a constellation of landmasses, peoples and epochs, within a Western 'carried beyond' or Caribbean dispensation.

The country is aptly named because if its profusion of rivers, creeks, and other bodies of water. It is located in the northern part of the Amazon Basin of South America, so it is quite understandable that there should be many waterways to the Atlantic Ocean. The three main rivers are, from west to east, the Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice Rivers. Guyana, formerly British Guiana, is the only English speaking country in South America, and its neighbors are Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname (formerly Dutch Guiana) to the west, south and east respectively. Although on the South American continent, Guyana is part of the West Indies and is regarded as the only Caribbean country the rest of the West Indies/Caribbean are island states. At 83,000 sq. miles (215,000 sq.km.) Guyana is about the size of the United Kingdom, and is the largest country in the West Indies.

Indigenous Peoples
1.0 Introduction
The Indigenous peoples of Guyana have inhabited the country long before the land was discovered by the Europeans. They are also major inhabitants of the hinterland, forest, savannah, coastland and and highland. They possess knowledge of the natural environment that enables them to survive in the wild as well as benefit therefrom. There are nine remaining tribes left, the Wapishiana, Akawaio, Arekuna, Macushi, Carib, Warrow, Patamona, Arawak and the Wai Wa, which has reached what some may see as something of a gene pool crisis, for they are few of the pure Wai Wai people left in the villages.
1.1 Current status of Indigenous people
Unfortunately these people sometimes find themselves in the midst of land use conflicts, where they find the land they reside upon are granted as a consession to foresters, miners, resort developers or conservation areas. They are also exploited by some people who use their skill to harvest forest products, such as wildlife and non timber products, they are paid very little upon delivery.
Amerindian farming
Amerindian farmers use the traditional method of shifting agriculture which is a method best suited to the conditions of the forest. It was a method that has evolved over centuries of experience. It has been criticized as a wasteful means of landuse, however it has proven to be an effective means of cultivation without needing artificial fertilizers or pesticides. However times are changing and many farmers are remaining on one piece of land for a longer time because of land restrictions and other outside influences, thus necessitating modern techniques of artificial fertilizers and pecticides.

CULTURE Until its independence, Guyana was tied culturally more closely to Suriname and French Guiana than to the rest of South America. Guyana was settled by East Indians, who still speak Urdu, Hindi, and Tamil dialects; black Africans; and a few Europeans, mostly from Britain. These various ethnic strains have remained fairly distinct, and today each group has its own style of life and culture, although the ties of nationhood tend to bind them together. Postindependence Guyanese culture still bears the imprint of its colonial heritage. Guyanese were taught to respect and covet European values during the colonial era, and this has not changed despite government exhortation. Yet ethnic identity continues to be important, with daily life centring around ethnic and family groups; the mother- and grandmother-dominated family among blacks differs from the father-oriented East Indian family. Men of both groups often commute long distances to work along the coastal highway. Daily dress normally does not distinguish one group from another. Amerindian culture, which remains uninfluenced by national politics, is recognized as an important element in Guyanese museum displays and as an inspiration in local music and painting. Cultural institutions are concentrated in Georgetown, including the Guyana Museum, which includes the Guyana Zoo, with its impressive collection of animals from northern South America. Guyanese writers have made noteworthy contributions to literature; the works of Wilson Harris, A.J. Seymour, and Walter Rodney are among the foremost.

From Friday August 29 to Sunday August 31 it was Guyanese in celebration: paying tribute to those stalwarts who made outstanding contributions to our culture and celebrating our musical heritage and cultural richness. They were three exciting days that made us all proud to be Guyanese. Our special thanks to our Grand Marshall, Mr. Terrence "Terry" Holder, to the 2003 Patrons Roy Singh and Sybil Chester, to the Office of Borough President Marti Markowitz, State Senator John Sampson, Consul General Brentnold Evans, to the presenters at the Symposium & the Awards Ceremony , to Dave Martins & The Tradewinds, Terry Gajraj & The Supertones, Lady Guymine, The Chronicle Atlantic Steel Orchestra, The Rajkumari Cultural Center Dancers, The Former Guyana Dance Company Dancers, Keith Waithe, Reggie Paul, Slingshot Drepaul, Allan Fenty, the Night People Band, and the many other talented performers at each event.
