Iraq: U.S. attempting to 'cover the truth' with missing Gulf War pilot
In this story: Details divulged from 1995 crash search Clinton: No 'hard evidence that he is alive' RELATED STORIES, SITES From staff and wire reports BAGHDAD, Iraq Iraq released a detailed statement on a U.S. pilot downed during the Persian Gulf War, saying a U.S. decision to change the pilot's status from "killed in action" to "missing in action" was a bid to antagonize Iraq. The U.S. Navy last week changed the status of Lt. Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher from "killed in action" to "missing in action" because of what it says is evidence he may have survived the crash. In response, an official spokesman of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Sunday that U.S. authorities, primarily President Bill Clinton, had announced a new "lie" on the issue in order to create a problem with Iraq. "It has been apparent from the facts of the issue, [which] are indisputable, that the American statements [are] an open attempt to cover the truth," the Iraqi government statement said.

CASE NARRATIVES, INFO PAPERS ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE REPORTS CURRENT NEWS HELP FOR VETERANS ... E-MAIL M essage from the S pecial A ssistant for G ulf W ar I llnesses On April 24, 2003, we released the final version of the Pesticides Environmental Exposure Report about the use of pesticides and the potential for overexposure to pesticides by servicemembers during the 1990-1991 Gulf War. An interim report was published in January 2001 to update veterans on what has been learned during the course of our investigation. Analysts from the Deployment Health Support Directorate concluded that some troops may have been potentially overexposed to pesticides and that this may have contributed to some of the unexplained symptoms reported by some Gulf War veterans. However, there is little documentation that quantifies Gulf War pesticide overexposures and veteran interviews suggest that less than 10 veterans sought treatment for pesticide exposure. Since publishing the interim report, our office has received no new information that would have changed its conclusion. Although this is a final report, veterans who have information they believe may change this environmental report are encouraged to call the toll-free Veterans Direct Hotline number at (800) 497 - 6261 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Eastern Standard Time. Silver Bullet: Depleted Uranium
Depleted uranium is the super weapon of the '90s; used in the Gulf War and the conflict in Kosovo. But now Canadian troops, soldiers and peacekeepers alike, may be exposed to depleted uranium with its potential danger. Now this threat wasn't one raised by a hostile enemy, but by the arms used by the United States and other NATO allies. They defeated the toughest armoured vehicles with the use of depleted uranium. It packed a knockout punch, but what soldiers often didn't know was that depleted uranium poses a threat to victor as well as vanquished. Dan Bjarnason reports this cautionary tale. The story producer was Marijka Hurko. Jerry Wheat went off to war in the Gulf, He drove a Bradley armoured personnel carrier for the Third armoured Division. Then the war followed Jerry home to New Mexico. "I have had real bad joint pain, abdominal problems," Wheat says. "I get real bad headaches. I went from 220 pounds down to 160 pounds for no reason, and that's when I started suspecting that it was something related to the Gulf." The shadows of that war eight years ago still haunt him. Wheat brought back more than victory from the front. Awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded in combat, Wheat came home with pieces of shrapnel embedded in his body and with mysterious body pains. Jerry Wheat is convinced these ominous souvenirs from the firing line are connected.

It's been more than 13 years since Captain Scott Speicher was shot down while on a combat mission over Iraq during the first night of Desert Storm, becoming the first American casualty of the war. Initially classified by the Department of Defense as KIA/BNR (killed in action, body not recovered), Captain Speicher made history again in January 2001, when he became the first American service member ever to be switched from a status of KIA to MIA (missing in action). On October 11, 2002, Scott's status was changed to POW, an acknowledgement by the Department of Defense that he is alive and a prisoner in Iraq. Get the full story here evidence that indicates he may be a prisoner of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. your voice heard. Our mission is simple:
  • To heighten public awareness about Scott Speicher's plight worldwide To keep this issue on the forefront of local, national, and international news To form alliances and partnerships in our home of Jacksonville, Florida, the nation, and the world with citizens' and veterans' groups who will work as volunteers with us to achieve the immediate release and return of Captain Speicher To create the largest army of volunteers ever who will work together as friends to free Captain Speicher To work tirelessly to spread the word around the world, requesting help in pressuring the United States government to take immediate action to free Captain Speicher

Powell's Mideast tour stops to mark Gulf War anniversary
WEB EXCLUSIVE Andrea Koppel: Powell takes Jordan's king for a spin KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait (CNN) As 10th anniversary celebrations of the liberation of Kuwait continued into Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said the alliance against Iraq had effectively diffused Saddam Hussein's threat against the tiny oil emirate. But Powell, who served as chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff during the war that forced Iraqi invaders out of Kuwait, said he wasn't surprised that Hussein was still in power 10 years later. "Never underestimate the power of a dictator," Powell told CNN, adding that he believed the coalition of nations against Baghdad had "pretty much removed his [Hussein's] stings." Powell arrived in Kuwait after arriving earlier Sunday from Israel, the West Bank and Jordan. Foremost during the Sunday trips were meetings with Israeli-Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.
