Gulf War pilot no longer presumed dead
Lt. Cmdr. Michael Speicher
Status to change to 'missing in action'
In this story: Iraq informed Pilot may have survived crash Wreckage found RELATED STORIES, SITES From Andrea Koppel CNN State Department Correspondent and Chris Plante Military Affairs Producer WASHINGTON (CNN) The Clinton administration plans to change the status of the first American presumed to have been killed in the 1991 Persian Gulf War from "killed in action" to "missing in action", sources told CNN. Administration and Defense Department sources said Wednesday a review of information gathered since 1996, including interviews with Iraqi defectors, prompted Navy Secretary Richard Danzig's decision to change the status of Navy Lt. Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher. One administration official said the United States raised the issue of Speicher with the government of Iraq on Wednesday, but would not elaborate.

I wish to personally welcome you to this web site. It has been created, with love, for you. When we first get diagnosed (or wonder if we should be diagnosed), I know too well how difficult it is to find information about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (aka CFIDS, M.E.), Lyme, and/or Fibromyalgia Syndrome. There are a myriad of sites that bring you the basics, and I try to present you those basics as well as information slightly beyond. At the moment, there is no cause nor cure. There are no magic bullets. This disease is so complex, no one drug will work. This is not a disease of just your muscles, your immune system, your sleep dysfunction, your hormones, your nutritional deficiencies, your NMH, or your gut; it is a cluster of symptoms that involve every system of your body. Treating it, therefore, involves testing and treating those deficiencies. The controversies surrounding that and the differences in our health contribute to our stress. My new job is to help us sort that all out. Hugs, Marilyn K

Contamination of Persian Gulf War Veterans and Others by Depleted Uranium
by Leonard A. Dietz
July 19, 1996 (last updated Feb. 21, 1999) (reproduced here with permission)
Abstract
We develop background information about depleted uranium (DU) and use it to describe a physical model of how on the battlefields in Kuwait and Iraq a large number of unprotected Gulf War veterans could easily have acquired dangerous quantities of DU in their bodies.
  • We examine how U-238, which comprises more than 99% of DU, decays radioactively, producing two decay progeny that are always present with it and add significantly to its radioactivity. The pyrophoric nature of uranium metal causes it to burn (oxidize rapidly) when heated by impact or in fires to form invisible aerosol particles that become airborne.
  • We refer to scientific measurements that have been made of the atmospheric wind-borne transport of uranium aerosols over distances up to 26 miles (42 km) from their sources. Stokes' well-known physical law helps to explain how airborne transport of DU particles can occur over large distances.
  • We describe how gamma rays and energetic beta particles become absorbed in body tissue and can traverse large numbers of body cells, potentially causing damage to genetic material in the nuclei of living cells. We describe a biokinetic model developed by the International Commission on Radiation Protection that explains how uranium microparticles can enter the body and spread to vital organs. The model predicts that an acute intake of uranium particles can result in urinary excretions of uranium for years afterward.

Dubai is bracing for the economic fallout of a war
By the BBC's Julia Wheeler in Dubai The rulers of the Gulf states have joined other Arab leaders in expressing their revulsion at the events in the United States.
Wrong does not wear a turban or a cowboy hat - it happens everywhere in the world
Abdallah al-Serkal They are strong American allies and remember clearly the support they received during the Gulf War. But they will be treading a difficult line in the coming months between backing America's declared war against terrorism and dealing with their people's anger if innocent Muslims are killed. And the effects of any military action are likely to be keenly felt in the Gulf. Plain wrong Inside Dubai's large Jumeirah Mosque, Abdallah al-Serkal is showing Westerners how Muslims pray. In a city where around 75% of the population is ex-patriate, his organisation, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, aims to bring down the barriers between local Arabs like himself and the people they see as their "guests".

“[A] war of collective punishment, a war of mass destruction directed at the civilian population of Iraq. The UN, at the insistence of the U.S., and contrary to international conventions and treaties, has created, in Iraq, a zone of misery and death - with no end in sight... The toll of these sanctions on an entire generation of Iraqi children is incalculable. What are the implications of Iraqi children growing up traumatised by hunger and disease, if they survive at all? How can the deeds of one leader or even an entire government be used to justify this unprecedented, internationally sanctioned violation of human rights?... The devastating effects continue to harm the environment, agricultural production and health of the Iraqi people significantly.”

115. Bibliography Of Protests Against Gulf War 1 (1991)
Studies on the protests that challenged the gulf war of 1991. Topics include studies of participants, mediamovement interactions, and public perceptions of gulf war protesters.
http://www.geocities.com/gulfprotestsbib/index.html
BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PROTESTS AGAINST GULF WAR 1 (1991) Operation Desert Storm was not a "patriotic triumph" for many U.S. citizens. Numerous Americans silently disapproved of the war, while others defiantly created a movement of Gulf War dissenters. By the late 1990's the recognition of these protests had faded from the public's consciousness. On top of this amnesia among the general citizenry, some insightful peace scholars have minimized the size of the protests. For example, peace historian Charles Chatfield (1992) wrote, "So brief and militarily successful was the [Gulf] war . . . that no significant opposition evolved" (p xi) and Sociologists Sam Marullo et. al. (1996) said that the Gulf War inspired only a brief "'minisurge' in peace activism." (p. 10). The purpose of this web-page is to give citizens and academics a list of empirical studies that counter these misconceptions. In doing so, readers will get references to studies that describe different aspects of mobilization against 1991 Gulf War. Since I am scholar who values academic integrity and sound research principles, I have only included works which pass a minimal level of academic rigor (clearly none of these works have perfect research designs, but even the best social scientific studies contain methodological limitations). Moreover, I have only included original research that primarily limits its focus to Gulf War demonstrations (i.e., not general studies of peace movements). LINKS:

Gulf War Collection
The war with Iraq was one of the biggest media events in history, if not the biggest. As a result, it generated more jokes in a shorter time span than any other event I can recall. Many of the jokes were just recycled jokes from other wars; however a large number were original and germane to this particular war. Below I have collected much of the best material based on the war and the circumstances around it. Most of it is the new material, though you will find a few recycled bits. I don't believe any other collection of this sort exists outside this book. Be warned that some of the jokes here could be considered racist towards Arabs and Iraqis. Such was the culture bred by the war.
