Background for the war

Cost of the war

Consequences of the war
History War fought between Iraq and allies of Kuwait , from January 16 to February 28, 1991, lasting 44 days altogether. The war had 3 main phases: 1) Iraq's occupation of Kuwait, 2) The diplomatic game and sanctions against Iraq, 3) The allied war against Iraq. The war was more than any war before fought on two very different fronts: in addition to the war field, it was fought in the medias. The media war was at first staged by Iraq and Kuwait. While Kuwait hired the best media advisors to present their case, in order to secure the support of the international audience, both the common man and the politicians, Iraq relied on its own outdated media personnel. Iraq's presentations of Saddam Hussein patting intimidated Iraqi infants, will forever remain among the more comic moments in the history of international politics. The Gulf War 1990-1991
Hostilities erupted in August 1990 when Iraq invaded its southern oil-rich, but militarily poor, neighbour, Kuwait. A series of United Nations Security Council resolutions led to trade sanctions against Iraq and the RAN frigates HMA Ships Darwin and Adelaide and the replenishment tanker Success were committed to a Multi-National Naval Force to enforce the bans. Much has been made of inter-Service cooperation in wars and battles past. Here, it was evident yet again. Because Success did not have adequate anti-air attack weapons, a detachment from the Army's 16th Air Defence Regiment using the RBS70 missile system was stationed aboard. En route, the RAAF provided F-111Cs, F/A Hornets, Macchis and Orions to carry out mock attacks on the Task Group to enhance the RAN ships' readiness for combat should it eventuate. On arrival, the Group was assigned the key "Alpha" area. It had been claimed by Commodore Chalmers because it was most likely to become the scene of action in enforcing sanctions. In this area of the Gulf of Oman, shipping passed through on its way to the United Arab Emirates and the Straits of Hormuz. In September 1990, the Group made several intercepts. On 14 September, the Iranian tanker

Moderator posted May 08, 2004 12:18 JB, A good friend of mine says "Nature has everything in it that is needed. For every poisonous plant that exists, there is one that can be an antidote." On a tour of Washington, D.C. by bus, the guide pointed to a tan colored building in construction which will be a museum that had rounded corners. Swirls of material curved around the building. "There are no right angles in nature," the guide said," this building symbolizes that observation." What is thought true today may be found to be false in the future, and vice versa. When, through our focused vision we find ourselves in a corner, perhaps it is time to get out of that box we have put ourselves in. We can learn a lot from nature. Yes, there is a forest beyond the tree.

    99. Gulf War Veterans And Depleted Uranium
By Dr. Rosalie Bertell. Health effects including medical testing for contamination.
    http://ccnr.org/du_hague.html
Gulf War Veterans and Depleted Uranium
Prepared for the Hague Peace Conference, May 1999
By Dr. Rosalie Bertell, Ph.D., G.N.S.H.
    Source of Exposure:
Uranium metal is autopyrophoric and can burn spontaneously at room temperature in the presence of air, oxygen and water. At temperatures of 200-400 degrees Centigrade, uranium powder may self-ignite in atmospheres of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Oxidation of uranium under certain conditions may generate sufficient energy to cause an explosion (Gindler 1973). Friction caused by bullet or missile entry into a tank or armored car, for example, can cause the uranium to ignite, forming a concentrated ceramic aerosol capable of killing most personnel in the vehicle. Depleted uranium was used extensively in place of tungsten for ordnance by the US and UK in the Gulf War. There is no dispute of the fact that at least 320 tons of depleted uranium (DU) was "lost" in the Gulf war, and that much of that was converted at high temperature into an aerosol, that is, minute insoluble particles of uranium oxide, UO or UO , in a mist or fog. It would have been impossible for ground troops to identify this exposure if or when it occurred in war, as this would require specialized detection equipment. However, veterans can identify situations in which they were likely to have been exposed to DU. Civilians working at military bases where live ammunition exercises are conducted may also have been exposed.
