GREETINGS!
TH Lady Elanor O' Rourke found this on a card that came with a pendant she recently purchased. She believe's that all of us in this Household will understand why she felt that this needed to be put up here. Never forget the power of the pack!
*THE WOLF PACK*
The Wolf pack is a symbol of Community. Wolves, united, can migrate, hunt, and sleep in groups. In their Unity, Wolves need not fear any natural enemy. They all help to raise the pups together.
Wolves also fight among themselves at times, reminding us that to live or work as a group, we need not give up our indviduality. Wolves rely on their speed and endurance to hunt. They have been known to run over thirty miles to tire their prey, and can bring down animals much larger than themselves. Like people, Wolves, united can never be defeated.

Background for the war

Consequences of the war
History War fought between Iraq and allies of Kuwait , from January 16 to February 28, 1991, lasting 44 days altogether. The war had 3 main phases: 1) Iraq's occupation of Kuwait, 2) The diplomatic game and sanctions against Iraq, 3) The allied war against Iraq. The war was more than any war before fought on two very different fronts: in addition to the war field, it was fought in the medias. The media war was at first staged by Iraq and Kuwait. While Kuwait hired the best media advisors to present their case, in order to secure the support of the international audience, both the common man and the politicians, Iraq relied on its own outdated media personnel. Iraq's presentations of Saddam Hussein patting intimidated Iraqi infants, will forever remain among the more comic moments in the history of international politics. Iraq Invades Kuwait - Sanctions Imposed back to top The economic sanctions on Iraq were imposed by the United Nations on the August 6th, 1990, following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Their stated purpose was to "bring the invasion and occupation of Kuwait by Iraq to an end." In their original form sanctions prohibited all imports to Iraq except medical goods and all exports from Iraq (oil in particular).
The Gulf War back to top On January 16, 1991 the United States launched a 43-day air and ground war on Iraq to force Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. The war was presented as a strategic war against the military machine of Saddam Hussein, but evidence on the ground, declassified reports, and comments by policymakers and participants in the war suggests a campaign much broader in its intent. "Amid mounting evidence of Iraq's ruined infrastructure and the painful consequences for ordinary Iraqis, Pentagon officials more readily acknowledge the severe impact of the 43-day air bombardment on Iraq's economic future and civilian population. Their explanations these days of the bombing's goals and methods suggest that the allies, relying on traditional concepts of strategic warfare, sought to achieve some of their military objectives in the Persian Gulf War by disabling Iraqi society at large. "Though many details remain classified, interviews with those involved in the targeting disclose three main contrasts with the administration's earlier portrayal of a campaign aimed solely at Iraq's armed forces and their lines of supply and command. Some targets, especially late in the war, were bombed primarily to create postwar leverage over Iraq, not to influence the course of the conflict itself. Planners now say their intent was to destroy or damage valuable facilities that Baghdad could not repair without foreign assistance.

Previous Page Next Page The euphoria caused by the drawing down of the Cold War was dramatically overshadowed by the August 2, 1990, invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. Iraqi control of Kuwait and the danger it posed to Saudi Arabia and the smaller Gulf states threatened a vital U.S. interest, because the United States, and the West in general, remained dependent on this region for much of its oil supplies. President Bush strongly condemned the Iraqi action and called for Iraq's immediate and unconditional withdrawal. An emergency session of the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to condemn Iraq, urge a cease-fire and demand the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. Later in August, Iraq announced the annexation of Kuwait, ordered the closing of all embassies in that country, and began taking U.S. and British citizens in Kuwait hostage. On August 8, President Bush went on national television to announce the deployment of U.S. troops to the Middle East. The president then worked to assemble one of the most extraordinary military and political coalitions of modern times, with military forces from Asia, Europe and Africa, as well as the Middle East. In the days and weeks following the invasion, the U.N. Security Council passed 12 resolutions condemning the Iraqi invasion and imposing wide-ranging economic sanctions on Iraq. The 12th resolution, issued on November 29, approved the use of force by U.N. member states if Iraq did not withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 1991. The new U.S.-Soviet relationship provided the necessary condition for the U.N. action to stem the Iraqi invasion. Without the new entente between the two countries, the United Nations would never have authorized military action against Iraq.

    Persian Gulf War
(August 2, 1990-April 6, 1991), conflict between an international coalition of forces led by the United States and the Iraqi army under Saddam Hussein. Iraq's August 1990 invasion and annexation of Kuwait led to speculation that Iraq intended to invade Saudi Arabia and take control of the region's oil supplies. The U.N. Security Council outlawed trade with Iraq and authorized the use of force if it did not withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 1991. President George Bush ordered U.S. troops to protect Saudi Arabia, and the protective Operation Desert Shield began. The January deadline ignored, Bush secured authorization from Congress to take military action against Iraq. In Operation Desert Storm, Allied planes began an air assault on Iraq and Kuwait to oust Hussein's army from the country. A ground war began on February 24, and in only four days of combat the United States and coalition forces defeated Hussein's troops. Bush declared the war ended on February 27, and on April 6 a cease-fire was signed. The U.N. Security Council demanded Hussein's agreement to tough financial and military conditions, requiring a renouncement of terrorism, payment of billions of dollars in damages to Kuwait, the acceptance of borders negotiated with Kuwait in 1963, and Iraq's destruction of its chemical and biological weapons. In June the Pentagon estimated 100,000 Iraqi soldiers had died in combat. Allies killed totaled less than 200.

    The Gulf War
Australia's contribution to the Gulf War
The invasion of Kuwait by Iraq on 2 August 1990 paved the way for the formation of a multinational force comprising 40,000 troops from thirty countries which would enforce United Nations Security Council resolutions. Over 1,800 Australian Defence personnel were deployed in the Gulf War from August 1990 to September 1991. The force comprised units from the Army, Navy and RAAF. In addition Army and RAAF provided personnel to Operation Habitat. The Australian contribution was two Oliver Hazard Class frigates, the replenishment ship HMAS Success (relieved by HMAS Westralia in January 1991), HMAS Sydney (IV), HMAS Adelaide , HMAS Brisbane and HMAS Darwin . A detachment from the Army's 16th Air Defence Regiment, a RAN Clearance Diving Team, RAAF photo-interpreters, Defence Intelligence Organisation personnel, and 4 medical teams. No deaths occurred among Australian personnel although Coalition losses amounted to 166.

    Gulf War 1990 - 1991
Iraq invaded its rival oil-exporting neighbour, Kuwait, on 2 August 1990. The invasion was widely condemned, and four days later the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a trade embargo against Iraq. A blockade of Iraq's access to the sea followed within weeks, as the United States assembled a large multinational task force in the Persian Gulf, while another was formed in Saudi Arabia. By the end of 1990 this force numbered some 40,000 troops from thirty countries, though the US retained its high profile as the dominant partner in the coalition. In November 1990 the UN Security Council set 15 January 1991 as the deadline for an Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait. On 17 January coalition forces began an aerial bombardment of Iraq that continued without respite until the war ended 43 days later. On 24 February 1991, after more than a month of aerial attacks, the coalition's ground forces moved against Iraqi positions in Kuwait and in Iraq itself. The magnitude and decisiveness of these strikes destroyed what was left of Iraq's capacity to resist. After two days of strikes Baghdad radio announced that Iraq's armed forces had been ordered to withdraw from Kuwait to the positions they had occupied before August 1990. Two days after this order, the coalition ceased hostilities and declared victory. Coalition losses amounted to 166, many by "friendly fire"; at least 100,000 Iraqis had been killed.

Most people have heard of Britain's involvement in military conflicts in the later half of this century, such as the Falklands War and the Gulf War. What the younger generation does not realize is that soldiers, sailors, and airmen from Britain and the Commonwealth have been fighting small wars to defend Britain's shrinking empire since the end of World War Two. From the insect ridden jungles of Malaya to the frozen hills of Korea, in the back streets of Aden and Cyprus, from the African bush of Kenya to the rain soaked hills of the Falkland Islands, young National Servicemen and regular British soldiers have been defending the British empire and her allies for the last 58 years. This is their story. This site was started in January 1999 and the Webmasters are constantly updating various chapters. If the campaign you served in is not listed within this web site, please e-mail us and tell us about it. Please note that NEGATIVE e-mails will be ignored. It is not our intention to ignore any military conflict since 1945, it just takes time to gather all the information and publish it. The story of Iraq
The land occupied by the modern state
of Iraq is among the most historic on Earth. Home to humanity's first civilization, Sumer, it has been the backdrop to thousands of years of momentous human events. What is currently Iraq resulted from the break-up of the Ottoman Empire after World War One. When France and Britain divvied up the Middle East, Britain got the "Fertile Crescent," the arc of land including today’s Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. The borders of these nations had no roots in history but were simply agreed upon by France and Britain. Like the nations formed out of the defunct Austro-Hungarian Empire in the same period, or the crumbling of other colonial empires 40 years later, this was to cause many problems. Initially the government of Iraq was a monarchy. Through the 1920s and 1930s, Iraq slowly gained more independence. There were many factions within the country competing for power and Iraq remained politically unstable. One thing generally agreed on, however, was dissatisfaction with the national borders that had been dictated by foreigners.
