Gulf War
The Gulf War was perhaps the most efficient war in American History, at least when considering the cost in American lives. It proved that U.S. technology and U.S. military doctrine is a potent force when applied to the world stage. Years after the war's end there are disagreements about whether the U.S. was justified in waging war against Iraq and over whether the war was prosecuted far enough. Beyond answering these questions, this site is dedicated to recounting a brief history of the war. To navigate this site, you may either read straight through every page by following the "next page" links at the end of each section. Or you may link directly with a specific topic by using the index links provided below: A brief history of Iraq and some of the factors that lead Iraq to launch an attack on their neighbor to the south. A description of conditions in Kuwait as well as Iraqi troop movements to complete a conquest of the small but wealthy emirate. Saudi Arabian fears of Iraq seemed justified by Saddam's belligerent posturing. There were several reasons the Saudi's decided to

The venue was a July 25, 1990, meeting between U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie and President Saddam Hussein.
In two years as ambassador to Iraq, it was her first private audience with Saddam. And it was her last.
A week later, on Aug. 2, 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, and to some, Glaspie's statement would symbolize appeasement in offering a "green light" to invade.

Persian Gulf Wars Persian Gulf Wars or Gulf Wars, two conflicts involving Iraq and U.S.-led coalitions in the late 20th and early 21st cent. The First Persian Gulf War, Hussein declared that the invasion was a response to overproduction of oil in Kuwait, which had cost Iraq over $14 million when oil prices fell. Hussein also accused Kuwait of illegally pumping oil from Iraq's Rumaila oil field. The UN Security Council called for Iraq to withdraw and subsequently embargoed most trade with Iraq. On Aug. 7, U.S. troops moved into Saudi Arabia to protect Saudi oil fields. On Nov. 29, the United Nations set Jan. 15, 1991, as the deadline for a peaceful withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. When Saddam Hussein refused to comply, Operation Desert Storm was launched on Jan. 18, 1991, under the leadership of U.S. Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf The U.S.-led coalition began a massive air war to destroy Iraq's forces and military and civil infrastructure. Iraq called for terrorist attacks against the coalition and launched Scud missiles at Israel (in an unsuccessful attempt to widen the war and break up the coalition) and at Saudi Arabia. The main coalition forces invaded Kuwait and S Iraq on Feb. 24 and, over the next four days, encircled and defeated the Iraqis and liberated Kuwait. When U.S. President George H. W.

The Iraq Crisis - An Overview Iraq and other "Persian Gulf" countries were created following World War I as protectorates of Great Britain. They were carved out of Mesopotamia, formerly part of the Turkish Empire. Iraq itself includes three major groups: Sunni Muslims in the center surrounding the capital of Baghdad, Kurds in the north and Shi'a Muslims in the south. About 15% of the population is Kurdish, 80% Arab. Some 60% are Shi'ite Arab Muslims like their neighbors in Iran, but they are Arabs, not Persians. There are also significant Assyrian and Turkomen minorities in the north. None of of these groups were given any national rights in the League of nations settlement. National and tribal disputes, as well as friction with Western powers trying to control Iraqi oil, have played a great part in Iraqi history. Click on map to display a larger map.

"America, to endure, must change...

President Bill Clinton, 1993

A SOCIETY IN TRANSITION Shifts in the structure of American society, begun years or even decades earlier, had become apparent by the time the 1980s arrived. The composition of the population and the most important jobs and skills in American society had undergone major changes. The dominance of service jobs in the economy became undeniable. By the mid-1980s, capping a trend under way for more than half a century, three-fourths of all employees worked in the service sector for instance, as retail clerks, office workers, teachers, physicians and other health care professionals, government employees, lawyers, and legal and financial specialists. Service-sector activity benefited from the availability and increased use of the computer. This was the information age, with hardware and software that could aggregate previously unimagined amounts of data about economic and social trends. The federal government had made significant investments in computer technology in the 1950s and 1960s as part of its military and space programs. In the late 1970s, two young California entrepreneurs, working out of a garage, assembled the first widely marketed computer for home use, named it the Apple and ignited a revolution. By the early 1980s, millions of microcomputers had found their way into U.S. businesses and homes, and in 1982, Time magazine dubbed the computer its "Machine of the Year."

Gulf War
In August of 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait , for reasons which remain unclear to this day. With the close of decade of war against Iran , Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein found himself with a massive army and an arsenal stockpiled with generous help from the United States , but with no particular enemy to fight. Dozens of rationales for the invasion have been tossed around in the intervening years, ranging from century-old border disputes and ethnic tensions, to simple greed. The situation was aggravated by a near-crisis in Iraq's economy. Hussein himself used the flimsy pretext that Kuwait was "stealing" oil from Iraqi fields near the border. In the final analysis, it pretty much boils down to this: After bullying neighboring states for a couple years, Hussein grew bored and decided to take it out on the oil-rich monarchy next door. In a sudden move that caught the world with its pants down, Iraq crashed over tiny Kuwait with an overwhelming force, taking the nation virtually overnight. The invading forces received help and a warm welcome from Kuwait's labor class, a much-abused group of poverty-stricken ethnic Muslims from the Gulf and Pakistan, who were tired of the way The Man was always keeping them down. After 10 years of support and arms trade with the U.S., Saddam probably didn't anticipate the reaction of President

Since coming to power, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had been a leader of the rejectionist Arab states and one of the most belligerent foes of Israel . On April 2, 1990, Saddam's rhetoric became more threatening: "I swear to God we will let our fire eat half of Israel if it tries to wage anything against Iraq." Saddam said his nation's chemical weapons capability was matched only by that of the United States and the Soviet Union, and that he would annihilate anyone who threatened Iraq with an atomic bomb by the "double chemical" (Reuters, April 2, 1990). Several days later, Saddam said that war with Israel would not end until all Israeli-held territory was restored to Arab hands. He added that Iraq could launch chemical weapons at Israel from several different sites (Reuters, April 18, 1990). The Iraqi leader also made the alarming disclosure that his commanders had the freedom to launch attacks against Israel without consulting the high command if Israel attacked Iraq. The head of the Iraqi Air Force subsequently said he had orders to strike Israel if the Jewish State launched a raid against Iraq or any other Arab country (UPI, April 22, 1990). On June 18, 1990, Saddam told an Islamic Conference meeting in Baghdad: "We will strike at [the Israelis] with all the arms in our possession if they attack Iraq or the Arabs." He declared "Palestine has been stolen," and exhorted the Arab world to "recover the usurped rights in Palestine and free Jerusalem from Zionist captivity" (Baghdad Domestic Service, June 18, 1990).

Quoting from an AP story that ran in Newsday, 10-31-1996, pp A18: Washington - Records of U.S. military units deployed in the Persian Gulf war contain abundant evidence of exposure to Iraqi chemical weapons, a former CIA analyst said yesterday. He accused the Pentagon and CIA of engaging in "a pattern of deception and denial." "There's no way you can even begin to get a complete picture of what happened over there unless and until they declassify every single unit log," said Patrick Eddington, who resigned from the CIA earlier this year. During the 1991 gulf war, Eddington analyzed satellite photos of Iraqi troop movements. The Gulf War 1991 Iraq has laid claims to Kuwait, a small oil-rich state in the Persian Gulf, ever since its creation in the late 1950s, when Britain granted it independence. Mounting war debts incurred by an internecine war with neighbouring Iran, the falling world price of oil, and the arguable provocation of a build-up of American troops in Saudi Arabia, led Iraq to invade and annex Kuwait on 2 August 1990. A coalition of 28 nations, led by the USA and including Britain, France and Egypt, embarked upon an air offensive lasting six weeks. During a 100-hour ground war the 200,000 strong Iraqi army holding Kuwait was driven back. The conflict was to create between two and three million refugees and resulted in severe environmental damage as the retreating Iraqi army blew up oil wells and allowed them to burn, and oil spills affected large areas of the region. Despite the result, the conflict (like the Falklands before) is a further example of Britain 'punching above her weight' in international politics due to belligerent governments, heavy reliance on US foreign policy decisions and her nuclear capability.

Iraq, then, effectively ceased to exist as a sovereign nation with its surrender in 1991. This low level warfare lasted until 2002 when President George W. Bush, following in his father's twelve year old footsteps, began rebuilding American forces in the Gulf in preparation for a new all-out campaign the aims of which were to rid Iraq once and for all of weapons of mass destruction and depose Saddam Hussein.
